Corona-Chan has touched down in Alabama.

I wonder which city is the lucky winner?

Montgomery. State capital, tons of travel from... all the types of people who use air travel most frequently. We can be sure that the person who tested positive in Montgomery left a trail of presents behind them.

As of March 12, University of Alabama extends Spring Break until March 30 in preparation for transition to remote learning. Putting the text in a spoiler below, for people who want to compare UA's planning to that of their own local/state institution.

Some highlights: all university-funded travel is suspended, and all non-essential meetings / gatherings / events are canceled until March 30. That part might as well read "until further notice," because students are instructed not to return to campus after spring break. From March 30 onward, classes will use remote learning methods.

March 12, 2020

Student spring break extended until March 30 as UA transitions to remote learning.

COVID-19 presents serious public health concerns. The University of Alabama is committed to slowing the spread of the coronavirus, while maintaining our mission of teaching, research, and service.

Social distancing is a key barrier to the spread of the virus. To assist with this national task of social distancing, and in keeping with UA system policies, the following actions are in effect until further notice.

As you consider these measures, I call upon each of you – faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and supporters – to model the creativity and strength of the campus community we have come to expect.

Remote Teaching and Learning

After tomorrow, classes will be canceled until March 30 to allow additional time for UA to transition – to the maximum extent possible – to alternative and remote learning. Faculty will determine how to best use existing technology, such as Blackboard and Zoom, to support students as they work to complete their educational requirements for the semester. Teaching will resume March 30 via these new methods.

Student Accommodations

Students should not return to campus when classes resume, and will continue their course work via distance learning subject to the following limited exceptions: (a) international or other students who do not have alternative accommodations; (b) students from areas without high-speed internet or other means of receiving remote instruction; and (c) students with exceptional hardships, or academic, employment, clinical or research requirements that should be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Arrangements will be made to ensure any students who must remain on campus have access to essential services. A move out plan will be communicated at a later date.

Domestic and International Travel

In addition to previously announced travel limitations, all university-funded travel, both foreign and domestic, is suspended. Travel sponsors can apply for exceptions to this restriction by completing a form that will be posted at healthinfo.ua.edu.

University Events

All non-essential University meetings, gatherings and events are canceled until March 30. Any exceptions must be specifically requested and approved via a form that will be posted on healthinfo.ua.edu

Other University Business

Due to these changes, a number of essential personnel will be required to work over spring break. Supervisors will be in contact about those schedules. Other University operations will continue as originally planned, with employees returning from spring break March 23. Thereafter, there is a potential for flexible work arrangements in alignment with our focus on social distancing. Supervisors should work directly with employees to make any necessary changes.

Education Abroad

Education Abroad has created a list of FAQs on the coronavirus, international.ua.edu/educationabroad/prepare/health-safety/coronavirus-faqs/.

Exposed or Sick Individuals

Do not return to campus if you meet the following criteria:

  • If you have traveled to a CDC COVID-19 Level 2 or 3 country (on personal or University business) or come in close contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19, you are required to contact the Alabama Department of Public Health
  • If you have the symptoms of fever, cough or shortness of breath, contact your healthcare provider. You may also call the Student Health Centerprior to visiting at (205) 348-3854 or after hours at (205) 348-0386. If you are an employee and have concerning symptoms, please call the University Medical Center at (205) 348-4696 or (205) 348-1770 before visiting.
Assistance with Remote Teaching and Learning Technology

We will examine how to best support employees and students who have special health or other needs impacted by these decisions. Faculty may call upon a specialized IT team to assist with online teaching. More information on IT assistance will be posted on healthinfo.ua.edu, as it becomes available.

I know this is not how we expected to begin spring break. Please take preventive measures to protect yourself and those around you. Exercise extra caution when traveling and interacting. This includes washing your hands frequently with soap and water and avoiding shaking hands and other physical contact.

Together we will overcome this challenge. Please monitor healthinfo.ua.edu for updates and additional information, in this rapidly evolving situation.

my folks went on a shopping spree here in Sweden and alot of stores don't have any toilet paper. is it really that impotent? back in the old days people would just use leafs to wipe themselves.
People are tunnel visioning hard and are not buying kleenex, paper towels, or even just napkins. It's amazing how common sense has been thrown out the window for most people.

Not even arctic research expedition is safe from our girl.

The coronavirus crisis is imperilling a massive international scientific project, after a team member tested positive for the virus.
The team member who contracted the virus works on the airborne component of the expedition and had not yet joined the mission in the Arctic.
About 20 members of the aircraft team who had been in contact with the person are now quarantined in their homes under the direction of the German health agencies, says MOSAiC chief scientist Markus Rex

This is going to improve the world so much. Pop that higher education bubble like you pop my cell membranes, Corona-chan.

They lost their wars over 200 years ago. This is all they have left.
Being part native myself, I can't fathom why there are so many of them who think vote blue no matter who, is all of a sudden going to turn things around and save the day. It is mind boggling to me considering anyone who doesn't toe the line or voted for Trump is treated like a fake natives or haters. With the current pandemic I doubt a democrat president would have made much of a difference preparing the populace for anything.

Gotta love this melodramatic bullshit. View attachment 1186161
What will it take for these morons to realize the time for vapid political posturing is past? Trump isn't the president a lot of people want for this crisis, but he's the president we have. Reeing about Trump won't save your grandma. Accept the situation at hand and focus on what we can do right now.

Fucking dumbasses. I hope someone coofs on all of them.

People who've used leaves, report they're far inferior to toilet paper. It's not the 'softness' but the texture. Like why newspaper is preferable to glossy mags. Smooth surfaces just spread everything around worse and leave you dirtier. They will take my TP from my cold, dead hands.

Got off work early and went by a few stores just to see the lines and my main place to grab even more dog food.

It's fucking amazing how bare things are. TP was long gone, but even stuff like chicken and beef have been decimated. Picture below.

Semper fucking fi to everyone in this thread who gave warnings weeks ago. :semperfidelis:

People at work were giggling saying that prepping was dumb. Well, whose laughing now?

9:11 a.m. Coronavirus scammers reported in East Bay: Alameda County sheriff's deputies say a person reported the first coronavirus-related scam after receiving a phone call that claimed a loved one had COVID-19 and got into an accident en route to the hospital. The caller told the person their loved one was arrested after the accident and needed $13,000 for bail. “Be aware!” officials said.

Is anyone surprised that the chinks and shitskins have no capacity to understand that now's not the time?
why even bring in the coronavirus into it? "your loved one has been in an accident" would have been enough, why would they add in that they have the plague, how would that lead to the person being more convinced?

Obama fucked up with the Ebola response and it should have been a sentinel event when the CDC almost lost containment.

This isn't even a partisan thing. Trump's fucked this up massively. Don't worry, it will be gone in April, like a miracle.

McArthur had some ideas about how to address the China problem. Perhaps it's time to revisit them?

Excerpt:

"(FOX NEWS) -- Now that the number of new people infected with the coronavirus in China is slowing down, the country's Communist Party is ratcheting up threats against the West, with a particularly nasty warning about access to life-saving drugs aimed at the United States.
According to a report from Fox News, an article in Xinhua, the state-run media agency that's largely considered the mouthpiece of the party, Beijing bragged about its handling of COVID-19, a virus that originated in the city of Wuhan and has spread quickly around the world, killing nearly 5,000 people and infecting thousands more. The article also claimed that China could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into "the mighty sea of coronavirus."'

yea just went out to buy some more stuff and the shelves are basically empty of any food that lasts more than a week or two and toilet paper is just flying off the shelves. feels damn good to have seen this shit coming and bought stuff over a month ago, i only regret that i didn't buy more.

I had a stray thought: What if the reason people were in so much of a panic because we live in an age where the internet lies in our fingertips and thus, it's easy to get lost on what is true and what isn't? The same thing almost happened with Ebola, everyone either didn't bat an eye, stayed cautious, or lived in blissful ignorance when it popped up in Africa, was about to panic when it hit US, then saw how it spreaded, people went "lol what stupid person will touch blood", and it died off. Corona popped up, and people panicked from the spread, further spreading it in turn because they were given the wrong thing, and leading to a lot of people learning supplies are running out, and it leads to endless waves of supplies dying off after restocks and so on. Meanwhile, there was a fair amount of people who lived in blissful ignorance when SARS and past diseases hit. When told, they go, "Wait, that happened?"

I'm probably rambling and this would most likely be buried under pages, but I just wanted to post a thought of mines.

Chinese bastards stole all our PPE gear so Kangz in Memphis are taking matters into their own hands and making hazmat suits out of plastic bags. I know that bags won't do shit, but I'm still salty about the NYC plastic bag ban that went into effect this month. I'm over here with my ass flapping in the wind. At least the folks in Memphis have free bags to cover their proverbial asses.
