Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

People continue to be super special. Their kids aren't going to school and kindergarten and half of them aren't going to work, so they're spending time with the kids outside. Old people milling about everywhere, people genuinely saying shit like "What are we supposed to do??? Stay inside??" Y E A H.

So fucking dramatic and difficult like they're being asked not to come outside for 2 years.

We're dealing with a situation that society as a whole has never dealt with before. They've never been told the word "no" to anything they've ever wanted to do. Americans, as a whole, are stubborn people who don't like being told what to do (I'm one of them, as well). Of course they aren't going to take the warnings of those with knowledge seriously. People are still out partying in cramped atmospheres, which is a perfect breeding ground for transmitting the disease. We don't have the discipline of a South Korea, and it's showing. We've been very, very spoiled as a nation. No true hardship for a long time.

We will see a massive spike in cases in the US (not to mention the world) over the next two-to-three weeks. I am certain of it.

Whether or not it finally gets the message across, I'm not sure.

Thank you, very cool. But I am not American, shockingly. This is a general people problem not an America problem.

Looks like President Xi don't like harsh criticism of how he reacted against corona-chan. One Chinese tycoon had vanished for this reason.

His nickname in China was “The Cannon,” and Ren Zhiqiang’s latest commentary was among his most explosive yet.

Mr. Ren, an outspoken property tycoon in Beijing, wrote in a scathing essay that China’s leader, Xi Jinping, was a power-hungry “clown.” He said the ruling Communist Party’s strict limits on free speech had exacerbated the coronavirus epidemic.

Now Mr. Ren, one of the most prominent critics of Mr. Xi in mainland China, is missing, his friends said on Saturday.

His disappearance comes amid a far-reaching campaign by the party to quash criticism of its slow, secretive initial response to the epidemic, which has killed over 3,100 people in China and sickened more than 80,000.

The Chinese government is working to portray Mr. Xi as a hero who is leading the country to victory in a “people’s war” against the virus. But officials are contending with deep anger from the Chinese public, with many people still seething over the government’s early efforts to conceal the crisis.

Mr. Ren, a party member, is well known for his searing critiques of Mr. Xi. In 2016, the party placed him on a year’s probation for denouncing Mr. Xi’s propaganda policies in comments online.

Sanity-keeping mini-story:
A member of my family just got a credit card scam call from a streetshitter. Said family member asked said streetshitter if he had any toilet paper. The streetshitter hung up. I guess he has no TP. :(

I'm wondering about those countries out there that import all their toilet paper though. When the TP runs out and they can't get anymore I think the shits really gonna hit the fan in those places. Like theres gonna be toilet paper riots, for real.

They have an alternative; for being so culturally traditional, surely they won't mind going back to basics?

Shit Sticks

10:20 a.m. Sen. Mitt Romney proposes giving $1,000 to every adult in U.S.: Utah Sen. Mitt Romney has proposed a universal cash handout to slow the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic. “Every American adult should immediately receive $1,000 to help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy,” his office said in a press release distributed Monday. Romney also proposed giving grants to small businesses that can “exhibit a revenue loss greater than 50% from the same month in the prior year.”

These words are the sound of my brain breaking itself over the physical manifestation of irony.

So if this is no more dangerous than the average flu why are countries willing to completely shut down and tank their economy to try to prevent the spread? There's got to be some aspect of this that we don't know about.

paranoia and perception. hysteria isn't just people running screaming through the streets, and can you imagine any politician (who probably wants to keep his job) saying it's overblown? I mean, just look at this thread. at least people in here stopped meme'ing fucking test kits.
at some point there's also not much you can do anymore and it turns from prevention to mitigation to not make it worse than it already is. economy is down due to an outside cause, so there's a pretty high chance once it blows over it goes up again even when dealing with the aftermath.

right now corona has a ridiculous amount of media attention and people are super anxious, a good chunk of that doesn't make much sense (like hoarding TP), especially considering people die to constantly from all kinds of stuff and no one gives a fuck (flu included, look up the numbers and get new pants)...
but here we are. let's just hope the right people learn something from it.

I wonder if it happened in other countries, but our ministry of health told people that if they are sick to just stay in the house and take Paracetamol, and only go to the doctor if they feel like they are dying.
It could be a plus in the USA since they don't have a culture of going to the hospitals without a damn good reason.

isn't there constant complaining from officials and personnel how people with a common cold clog ERs, USA included? that's probably not getting better with everybody being paranoid and stupid after hearing a cough on the radio.

plus, what else is there to do if you're otherwise fine? there aren't enough beds if shit gets slightly above average, let alone to put everyone in a hospital bed who tested positive but otherwise has only mild nor no symptoms at all and will most likely recover - and it's assumed any adult is able to understand what "self-quarantine" means.

How long can we realistically extend closures before people start going stir-crazy or service industries start collapsing? People in the US really do not like being inconvenienced.

at some point people will stop giving a fuck, if it's too soon it's bad, like sticking your head out before the firefight is over - that's why you have to plan it around the tards in the population. some bong-kiwis mentioned it how that was what the UK was planning till people reeee'd on twitter again.
