I admit that I was a bit hasty with the springhole site awhile back and some other articles on cultural appropriation.
While they do criticize appropriation, they clarify that not all uses of other cultures are appropriation. One thing I recall that seems to be always OK with them is enjoying food from other cultures.
I think in matters of other cultures, the Golden Rule and loving others as oneself may be good guides.*

This happened to me a few years ago when I was interning in DC. Eating tapas (in Chinatown, mind you) was appropriating Latin@ culture, and I, as a white male in a suit, should be ashamed. I just told them to fuck off (same with the LaRouchebags, socialists, and radical environmentalists).Someone once told me that I was APPROPRIATING for eating Korean food regularly. Doesn't matter that it's the only affordable lunch in Midtown, that it's in line with my lactose intolerance or that regularly eating fermented foods like kimchi stopped my horrific intestinal ulcers. (Or, you know, that supporting people's businesses is directly supporting them.)
This was after she was done telling me that you have to actively date every race or you're a bigot (but not every gender 'cause girls are icky). Just thinking about that conversation again is upsetting

Play-Doh and coloring books? I know cookies could get some pass since it could be a bit comforting as food and calming music could help calm one down but this makes the people sound like children. And that viewpoint thing, if the space is mean't to shelter one form hearing different viewpoints, one would ask why go to college? I had a professor who wouldn't agree with my religious views and another that wouldn't agree with my beliefs but that wouldn't really mean one should go to a safe space to get away from someone who has a different view.

This may just be how I was raised, but I was under the impression that a certain amount of trauma and unpleasantness was considered necessary to development. Learning to lose with dignity, endure through hardship, and accept that some things are going to be extremely unpleasant is a key factor in simply functioning in life.
Ultimately, life is not a "safe space", and this huggy shit is stunting their ability to deal with that.

Give me a break, when you are over the age of 18 you need to take full responsibility for your action and need to be able to judge for yourself if the content you are hearing is acceptable for you.
