Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Pretty sure it was already around since it was found in November since people were still traveling then. One of my friends had a really shitty cough starting in December and had to go to the hospital but only left with antibiotics for a "throat infection" despite all the symptoms matching up with Corona (Fever, dry cough, coughing up blood like the fucking chinese, chest tightness).

My county is very rural; deep in the strangest depths of the Bible belt, dry(ish), and with a large Asian contingent. There's a lot of missions in the area as well, and our single Asian buffet is one of the busiest slopjoints in town.

It's a small enough area that when everyone starts coming down with the red lung, it's noticable.

And a lot of folk around here have noticed that the nasty shit started up right around the time all these missionaries & asian families started flying home for the holidays.

It's my layman's theory that the first positive cases being reported are actually 2/3rd wave infections. Everyone who's had it before was already over it & clear by the time the world woke up.

Remember that Dick only avoided cowdom recently by Maddox being the Dumbest Cuck in the Universe (Biggest too) and called in and got his venues cancelled.

Previously his shows were unfunny and gay with bad guests and he was starting to tard out.
Yeah, sorry, should have provided more context. I think he's just upset because this is going to cancel his live event.
You mean the one he's already struggling to get going?

Oh, and in other news, some mad lad bought all the chicken in a grocery store I went to get the essentials for chili (and other things). So that was fun since I needed some for later.

For anyone that doesn't know, LABasedComedian is Dick Masterson. He's been sperging out all day on Twitter calling anyone that even slightly disagrees with him about this a boot licker. Kinda like how Antifa calls everyone that isn't them a Nazi.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but there is one big reason to believe America won't be hit as badly as Italy - The Italian fashion industry. Clothing manufacture has been a big deal in Italy for a long time - I'm sure many of us have willingly paid a bit extra for a garment because the tag inside read 'Made in Italy'. It implies old-world craftsmanship. It's a brand in and of itself - seeing an Italy tag doesn't evoke sweatshop labor quite like a China tag.

Alas, at some point during the last 10 years the Italians who owned these factories and businesses (many of them multiigenerational) realized that those tags promise their item is 'Made in Italy'. Nothing more. So they start replacing their seamsters en masse with exponentially cheaper migrant labor from China. Many sell their entire operation outright - to chinese entrepreneurs. This proves profitable for the right people, so direct flights between Milan and various chinese industrial centers (including wuhan) start being offered. Italian customs are relaxed, etc etc etc. Keep the cheap labor coming, amirite?

I think that's why it blew up there so horribly - A direct pipeline to the source with relaxed immigration controls along the way. The wages of globalism.
So how would it be still considered as "Made in Italy"? Is there a fashion/clothing industry equivalent to buying tomatoes grown in China and canning them in Italy and calling them "made in Italy"?

Even in grief, the rules of hand hygiene and social isolation apply.

That’s what thousands of funeral directors learned Monday when they joined a Facebook livestream to hear firsthand from the U.S. Centers for Disease, Control, and Prevention how coronavirus will change how Americans die and are buried.

The new disease, which has killed more than 6,500 people worldwide since it emerged in China in late 2019, has put an end to social gatherings around the world. In the United States, the CDC advised organizers to cancel or postpone any events of 50 or more people for the next eight weeks across the country. This extends to “large funerals,” said David Berendes, an epidemiologist with the CDC. (It also applies to weddings, which should also be canceled.)

Other countries are grappling with similar issues. In Italy, which has Europe’s largest elderly population, 300 people died on Monday alone, according to the New York Times. Morgues are overflowing and funerals are illegal after the country banned civil and religious ceremonies outright to stop the spread of the disease.

Berendes recommended digital solutions to the mortician’s dilemma: “If livestreaming and limiting events to immediate family is possible, we encourage that,” he said. For those who do visit funeral homes, Berendes recommends having hand sanitizer at the ready and staggering funeral services so that different families don’t overlap.

The CDC discourages mourners from “kissing, washing, and shrouding” someone who has died from confirmed or suspected coronavirus. “If washing the body or shrouding are important religious or cultural practices, families are encouraged to work with their community cultural and religious leaders and funeral home staff on how to reduce their exposure as much as possible,” according to the CDC. “At a minimum, people conducting these activities should wear disposable gloves.” But a disposable gown, googles, and masks may be necessary in some cases.

The real risk is posed not by the dead, but by the living, as we reported earlier this month. While corpses can spread communicable diseases, funeral directors are more concerned they’ll contract the virus from family members or caregivers of the deceased. The risk is there when the mortician picks up the body from the home or hospital morgue, and at the eventual funeral (though family members who have been exposed to the virus should, in theory, be in an at-home quarantine). This scenario has already played out in Spain, where 60 of the country’s 430 coronavirus cases were tied to a single funeral service, The Guardian reported on March 7.

Any anxiety morticians feel is only exacerbated by the growing shortage of essential supplies. “The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to a global disruption in the supply chain of personal protective equipment,” said Jill Shugart of the CDC’s National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety. While funeral directors are prioritized for personal protective equipment purchases, people like Matt Colvin, who stockpiled 17,700 bottles of hand sanitizer, have made face masks, respirators, and other equipment increasingly hard to find.

Coronavirus poses serious risks—in death and in life. But as Arizona funeral director Joseph Stone recently told us, “This is the nature of the job we do.”

The press is so fucking stupid.

"Hurr durr, President Trump, why haven't you closed all restaurants and bars around the country?"

"Well I'm encouraging everyone in the nation to not go out, and it's up to the states to make that call."

"Yeah well, what about the people that do go out?"

"Well, I encourage them strongly to stay home."

"Yeah, but how are you going to make them stay home?"

The media gets mad that Trump becomes POTUS and calls him a dictator. Then, they get mad when they find out that he isn't a dictator. Blows my mind.

EDIT:

Also, since we're on the topic of staying home: Scientifically, it has been proven that mandated quarantine is less effective than promoting social distancing. And yes, they are two different things.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/

So, you know ... The Administration is currently doing what it can to educate the masses and to promote social distancing. There's actually a science behind the methods being used right now; it's not Trump sitting on his thumbs.

It's ridiculous that entire countries are shutting down over something that's barely any worse than seasonal flu. Most of the people who die from this were on death's door anyway.

Don't believe me? Look at the data from the cruise ship. 705 cases and 7 deaths. No one below the age of 70 died. Many were completely asymptomatic and the majority only had mild flu-like symptoms. That's a fatality rate of less than 1% in a population with a median age of 59 (boomers love cruise ships).

The reason you're seeing higher mortality rates in national figures is because all the asymptomatic and mild cases are going completely undetected. It's a straightforward sample bias.

We're wiping trillions off the stock exchange and being forced into quarantine because some 80-year-old chain smokers might die 18 months prematurely. It's absurd. The economic fallout from the panic is going to be a hundred times worse than this piss-weak virus.

The EU Commission will propose to member states a temporary ban on all non-essential travel from third countries into the EU for initially a period of 30-days due to coronavirus, commission president Ursula von der Leyen on Monday said. EU leaders, who will hold crisis talks on Tuesday, will have to agree on the measure. EU officials will be urging the UK and other non-member states to join.

it seems like most of the individual EU members have already said “Fuck Shingen” and have been closing their own borders all on their own. Even Angela Merkel suddenly rediscovered the benefit of borders. Granted Greece will appreciate this as it leaves them open to start using Live Ammo for border enforcement. UN be damned.

If only we had another, single word term for "sheltering in place" during a pandemic. Something latin-sounding that really gets the point across.

Ah well.

The stupidity on display here is staggering. This Idiot Mayor just triggered a panic exodus from an area of high infection into the largely Un infected regions of the country. For that alone he deserves to face a firing squad. Neighboring States, deploy your National Guard Units to the task of turning back Californians. Give them Live Ammo as well. UN be damned.

Jigga what? Stop all testing? of sick and dying people? What in the name of sam fucking hell would cause that big brain thought to occur?!‽?

Important thing for people to grasp. The testing really serves no clinical purpose. It’s easier for the Doctors to just assume you have it. Clinical treatment and precautions will be used regardless. The testing only serves to let the Government know how far and where it has spread. Once the disease reaches saturation point the testing is largely pointless. Or as you note in this case, the government doesn’t want the full enormity of the numbers known.
