Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Just a big thunk I got from my avatar picture.

With a lot of old folks dying, will we loose a lot of valuable expertise and high positioned employees? Remember this thing gets really freaky from 60+ .

Its not just 90 year old alchemiemer granny. A lot of CEO-s and other higher ups are old and HR will have to replace them with competent new people.

So maybe the economy is fucked either way. Just imagine your average millenial trying to run a company lol.
i might be a future refugee to hungary since it's about the only place that actually controls their borders and will probably need extra population for cheap votes to keep orban in power with all the boomers about to die off

and don't worry, i don't have any usable skills either so it'll be the same as it was before the boomer die-off

Is anybody else getting "extreme alerts" on their phones? I just got one warning me to stay away from gatherings of 25 people or more.

Stupid question but does it make that annoying noise like when you get an amber alert or flood warning? I've been hearing that for the past few days on other peoples phones and it's fucking annoying I hate that shit it's loud and makes me wanna pee myself.
This shit's feeling way too excessive at this point. There's already normies telling each other to stay inside, we don't need our phones going full Orwellian on us too (or at least even more so).

Looking through Trump's Twitter right now. Seems to be butting heads with Cuomo big time.

A lot of people have been shitting their pants over Cuomo's statements about how long this is going to last and about how we have a handful of more weeks before we even hit a peak. Most people are like "Oh no! I have to stay home for 90 days! Fuck that! Fuck this! Yada yada yada!"

I'm sitting here like "Jesus. Cuomo is pushing for 'temporary national measures' a la The Patriot Act" (and we all know how temporary The Patriot Act was, right?). He's basically saying that we should be making several federal laws to apply to every state, and Trump is saying that every state is very unique in how this virus is affecting them. Trump seems to be very reluctant to do something drastic on a national level. Who looks like the dictator here?

Seriously: The virus doesn't scare me nearly as much as the aftermath of it. Our economy is fucked, and our government is already ready to strip our rights away in the name of "safety" and "protection." There's zero chance that any new "temporary" law would actually be temporary.
This. Nick Rekieta had a good discussion on this last night. All this measures have been implemented soooo quick. And I am confident in my government to abuse this new found "power". And what happens with all this infusion of money into businesses? Does the money have strings attached to it? This is an amazing opportunity for the government to take more of our freedoms.

what's really funny is I have another old phone that doesn't have sim card and I just use it as a thing to watch synchtubes on in the kitchen, but that one gets Amber Alerts while it's turned off

When are we going to have a national discussion on what we consider to be “acceptable risk” in terms of measures taken? While I’m not questioning the credentials of the medical experts, I am questioning their ability to balance this disease with having a functioning economy. If it was up to doctors and medical experts we’d all be quarantined until a vaccine comes out. But people are and will end up losing businesses they spent their whole life building, people will lose their homes, and their jobs. This virus is clearly everywhere by now and I would bet the fatality rate is substantially lower than they claim. There are human lives and costs from an economic collapse and the “experts” seem to not realize that.

I have a comorbidity with this virus, and I’ll tell you right now I would rather risk death or permanent lung damage from this thing than be safe and lose everything I’ve worked for over the last 10 years. The experts are so busy worrying about saving as many lives as possible, that they haven’t thought about how absolutely shit those lives will be after they destroy the entire economy.

I don't care if this post gets deleted but I would like to take this opportunity to Nelson Muntz
Very fucking unlikely that the current situation could cause that. How old are you people? Do you have any idea how societies function? Chinese, nor the world economy just can't collapse to a disease that has thus far killed a handful of people.

China may experience severe internal unrest because of this, but not a total collapse.
This one is truly exceptional
This is like thinking the SARS outbreak caused the 07 housing crisis.

I swear, in the United States, things have gotten so bad because of the reaction to it. Everyone be acting like spoiled brats about how they're asked to stay home as much as possible for a few months, and then hoarding everything from the stores to the point where there's shortages now. It's not the virus that's killing the economy, it's the hysterical, spoiled brat response to it because Americans are simply unprepared for the littlest inconvenience. I hate people.
Can we just kill their children too?

What's risky about it? If you're young and healthy, your chances of dying from this are like 1/10,000. Only a tiny fraction of that demographic will require hospitalization.

And I'm absolutely floored that Sweden and the UK of all places are apparently taking a sensible, pragmatic approach to this.

Staying in lockdown mode for 2 years until a possible vaccine is developed, produced, and deployed, really isn't feasible. Places like Korea and Taiwan which have reduced the reproduction rate to below replacement levels with face masks, good hygiene and border checks might be able to pull this off, but it's too late for America and Europe where the virus is widespread.
Your chances of managing it ok are HIGHER if you’re young. And healthy. But you know those fit healthy football players who sometime just drop dead? That’s because people have stuff like unnoticed heart issues. Or just a health condition you do t notice when you’re young. When you put the system under strain, things can fail fast even for the young.
As for why it’s a bad idea. Think of it like managing a forest fire after years of mismanagement has left you with a foot of tinder on the forest floor and you live right next to it. It’s going to burn. If you just set the lot ablaze it’ll all be sorted in a week. But you’d probably rather they created firebreaks, and burned it off in controlled ways and didn’t do it during a hot summer when half the fire service is Busy elsewhere, right? Same thing. All that tinder will burn, but if it burns slowly, we can contain it within the capacity we have. Except we can’t, but it’s better that we are at 5x capacity that 500x capacity.
I think we are in this for the long run, and life has to continue, but we should do that by locking down FIRST to give us as much time as we can to expand ICU capacity. Then we ease off the restrictions a bit. It flares up. We clamp down, and do that again and again everyone has had this or we get a vaccine. A vaccine is the only good way out of this and that takes time.

I'm actually quite pleased with the UK government's handling of this so far - they're talking to people like intelligent adults, seem to be keeping a sense of proportion unlike, to pick a great example, the government of Japan with Fukishima where they artificially bumped up the nuclear severity levels because they didn't want to be accused of not taking it seriously enough (with serious consequences). Of course who knows what hindsight will tell us but so far seems to be measured and thoughtful. Can probably thank the huge majority that the UK public gave the Tories this time around for them having the majority and confidence to not just react to media stories impulsively.

It's sad that the media here is proving to be just as irresponsible everywhere else in the Western World at present (nobody seems to be buying any Chinese talking points, not even The Guardian at the moment).

This is probably the first "mature" government we've had since Thatcher if not before, it's being honest, frank in its assessments and telling people daily what it's up to. It's even prepped people that this is going to hit people hard and they will die.

Number 10 is now giving daily briefings which are being live streamed to keep everyone informed, but I saw a lot of it seemed to be repeats of the previous days talking points reinforced.

What did we get today? Boris used the phrase "last gasp" to describe the UK manufacturers racing to manufacture more masks and ventilators ready to cope with the worst case scenarios projected and to help shore up the NHS and one dumb bint from the media shrieked about if he wanted to apologise for using a regular turn of phrase to describe a desperate rush.

For those in the "let them eat cake" camp about a bailout for the paycheck to paycheck Americans it bares repeating that the consequences of all those low income workers defaulting on their loans, failing to pay rent and failing to service their credit cards would be stupebdously bad. Dropping a shit ton of money now to cover the month of April will go a long way to mitigating the long term consequences.

I dont see us being able to cover May though. We will need this shit sorted out by then.

If it is any consolation mumps was not a 'death sentence' to my father who sired two healthy spawn (who looked just like him, kek) post adult mumps. I see this thing compared to mumps and I think the testicular damage is an outlier, if you're scared, get some sperm frozen, it'll likely be ok.
Thanks, I figure it's not a certain thing but just my biggest worry with the virus. Thanks for the optimism though 🙂
