All schools in UK to close for school purposes on Friday. Some sort of ersatz kindergarten to run in some school premises instead to keep key workers esp NHS staff at work.

Local Facebook mom groups are losing their fucking minds now that school closure is confirmed. Especially those who are not key workers and now have to find childcare.

It's summer in Australia, Brazil, Argentina. Brazil just had its first death.

and you still get out of season flu deaths. The point being the summer temperatures slow the spread as they reduce it’s lifespan in the open air. It doesn’t completely eliminate it. You still get Summer colds, even when it’s not cold and flu season. Moreso as more and more of our lives are climate controlled.

Data from South Korea and the cruise ship are consistent with one another and they both show an even weaker effect, so if anything those charts overstate the severity of the virus.

What that data tell us is that context, specifically resource per case, is key. The cruise ship patients were closely monitored, and whisked off to be treated in a health service that was at the time running at full capacity and able to lavish attention on each patient.
S Korea have undergone mass testing, and again have been able to keep the infection within the capacity of the health service.

Italy and Iran shows us what happens when the health service is overwhelmed. In the ship/Korea scenario, nobody was dying because there wasn’t oxygen, whether piped in, or pressured or full mechanical ventilation. In Italy we are seeing triaging of cases and people who would otherwise survive If there was capacity, die.
The same has happened in Iran. Sanctions have destroyed their health system and they couldn’t cope. You wouldn’t die of a broken leg in the USA in normal circumstances. You could well do in a third world country with no health provision, or a war zone. That’s the comparison. What’s trivial with adequate care will kill you without.

The death rate is going to vary by country, and it’s going to vary a LOT. That’s not Mainly because it’s selectively targeting people, it’s because once a health service capacity reaches saturation, the death rate compounds. Similarly you’ll see death rates change as the peak hits - those initial and final cases will have more resource per case and be more likely to survive.

God forbid it really gets going in Africa or the third world generally. The thought is chilling.

Anyone want a flashback reminder as to why the WHO and the Chinese Communist Party shouldn't be trusted?
Well that didn't age well.
Oh and just to add some extra worry to everybodies psyche. The frontline Healthcare providers, the Doctors and Nurses are not the only ones you need to worry about getting sick in the hospitals. there is some overflow capacity of clinical personnel. What you need to worry about is down in the basement. Biomedical Engineering. This is a small department every hospital has made up of 3-10 Uber Nerds. The old school bearded unix nerds. The type of nerds that are exempt from the corporate dress codes, because they are THAT important, nobody else even begins to know how to do what they do, and without them things fall apart. These are the strange wizards that can keep broad catalogs of 10, 20, even 50 year old mission critical Medical technology working day to day. Every hospital has them. Every hospital needs them. They are hard to find and have insane job requirements. And there are no spares. As they get sick, shits gonna stop working. Fast.
I know a couple of boomer guys who are still working in communications because they're the only ones who can speak the olde tongue to the trunk. If guys like this get sick we could be in for really interesting times.

Every time a new paper is released, the mortality rate gets revised downwards. This one puts it at 0.66%. We're getting very close to flu territory now.

Data from South Korea and the cruise ship are consistent with one another and they both show an even weaker effect, so if anything those charts overstate the severity of the virus. Americans are not a different species. There's no reason to believe they will suffer any more severely than slants or international cruise ship passengers.

Sure, the American melange of phenotypes is the same as Korea and a cruise ship at the beginning of a crisis will predict the mortality rate of 330 million people.
I sure that all of those papers have correctly and accuratly separated out ongoing flu pneumonia deaths from COVID-19 pneumonia deaths/s

Anyone predicts the future on a complex issue-Me 'pressing X to doubt'.

Great, so we can have more cars that mysteriously slam into buildings on top of this shit. No one could have forseen this level of stupid.
Shut up, we're going to put 60 million people out of work with automated transport or kill everyone trying!
Does anyone remember when the CIA was hacking cars that didn't even have a wireless connection?
Dis plan bad.

Why do you make me defend the femenazi crazies?

Spanish prime minister's wife and some other female whatever hit with coronachan.
They joined a feminist march on wamanz day, the 8th of March... unintentional pun.
After 8th, Spanish Coronachan took 11178, opposed to just 589 before the stupid feminazi death march.
Capture coronachan to pwn the patriarchy. That will teach those straightciswhitecapitalistmale pigs a lesson.

This article is fallacious. 589 is what we had the 7th of march. 11178 is what we had YESTERDAY. It's obviously not because of the marches. Now, the marches were definitely a factor. I bitched about them.here live. But not THIS excessive.

Also it was the wife of the vicepresident, and the president, and another female minister. We don't have a prime minister in spain.

Dumb question but with the mask shortages at hospitals. Why aren't their reusable masks that can be cleaned in autoclave or some other sanitation method?

Masks have really tiny pores. Once wet they're useless. Evaporating liquid with pores that small is really hard, and even if done you're doing it in conditions that likely contaminate them.

The usual morning announcement by the Polish ministry of health brings only 8 new cases (246 total). That is very low, these past few days we generally started off with 20 or more. Good sign?

Unless we somehow find out later you had a massive lack of testing it seems you poles are being a shining fucking beacon when it comes to containment. A+ so far.

Went to the shops today, midday on a weekday which is usually dead and shelves fully stocked.

No canned goods, rice, pasta, bread, most meat, long life melk, toilet paper or flour. Flour really annoys me. I bake my own bread and this shit is always in plentiful supply. My god given flour is now going rancid in some chav's kitchen because he panic bought 50kg despite never having baked anything in his life.

I look forward to all the social media posts in a couple of months of people bitching about having to throw away rotten food they didn't consume.

Also saw a few closed tills piled up with products and full shopping carts. No idea what happened, I can only assume some tards went ballistic when told you can only buy 1 pack of tp or whatever.

From what I can see we're doing the same dance we've done with the previous pandemics. Swine Flu was feared to be a lot deadlier than it actually turned out to be, topping out at 0.026%. However, preventative measures were taken in the UK and its severity was found to be a lot less.

Preventative measures are likely what's pushing the death rate down outside of China. Because, again, we have an actual healthcare service and populations that vaguely give a shit about their general hygiene among enough of the herd that it slows down a lot of these kinds of diseases.

Said preventative measures seem to be going a lot further this time around because it's still a lot deadlier than expected and can effect numerous other groups more than folks realise.

It's happened in a few places. People get angry because they "need" it, and so as a big fuck you they leave the whole cart there for some poor sod to have to unpack.

Not sure if posted already, but this graphic from top UK paper of record "The Sun":

It's kinda the inverse of the Differential Diagnosis graphic posted by EmuWarsVet a few days ago.

These are for people who've been tested positive.
Very interesting that one of the main key symptoms - Dry cough - is still only found in 2/3rds of cases.

Personally, as of Monday I have,:mild temperature (not fever), mild headache on and off, slight shortness of breath, and medium level sore throat. But no cough. So probably one of the hundred other winter bugs going round.

Once again, lifestyle choices play a huge factor in how this virus affects people, and it has been reported that both Italy and China have a large population of people who smoke. Also, let's take into account of the eating and cleaning habits of even the young people in China as opposed to other places around the world.

This has been posted before, but it's worth posting again for people who may not have seen this yet:

I remember the main goal of the cultural revolution was to destroy those superstitions and old ways. It's interesting to see people reverted back to those lifestyle decisions decades after Mao's death.

Okay this is a question I need to get answered asap:
I got a package from Hong Kong I ordered beginning of December last year.
It came in an air tight package. You know those plastic-elastic dhl packaging. When it arrived I wore mask and protection goggles. I packaged it now 3 times in a garbage back and put it somewhere safe outside my apartment. How long you guys think I should wait before opening the package?
I don't want to die to Corona-Chan.
Edit: forgot to say it was sent from Hong Kong on the 10th of March.

It can live on plastic and other hard surfaces for 72 hours, and on cardboard for 24. Spray it down with Lysol or rubbing alcohol in a squirt bottle and enjoy your stuff.
