Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Just read news of a woman who escaped quarantine and went to the local police station because she's vegetarian and the food she was provided with included sausage.
If nobody ate meat the wu flu wouldn't have happened. The vegetarians win this round.

Actually if PETA and the people who say "blaming the Chinese for eating bush meat is racist" fought to the death who would win?

If you look at Johns Hopkins coronavirus tracker site

The number of Recovered is now almost the same as the number of cases in China. Admittedly the Chinese authorities are lying commie shits but if you lock down most of the country and then wait for a few weeks, this is bound to happen eventually. People aren't sick forever - most people think there's a 7-14 day period during which most of the sick people recover and a minority die. Either way, they're no longer infectious.

I could see Western countries having the same thing happen. Also, this virus has so far only killed 8,957 people globally. That's not a big number compared to the death toll from flu, cancer, heart disease, etc.

Coronavirus would be bad if you let it spread through your population, overloaded your hospitals and then the death rate went up. Still, Italy and China did that and they didn't see the nightmare case of 60% infection and a >1% death rate because once they could see that possibility they shut. down. everything, Madagascar style.

Assuming lockdowns can reduce R below 1.0, the disease will eventually burn itself out.

I make fun of veganism and vegetarianism all of the time ... But goddamn, being vegan would be my only diet option of choice if I were forced to live in China.

I bet that if I saw one of these infamous wet markets in person, I probably wouldn't eat meat ever again. The wet markets look horrifying enough; imagine the smell. Yup, I'd be turned off from meat forever, probably.

You're still fucked. Gutter oil.

Trump tried to get North Korea to bite and become a war, didn't work. He tried it with Iran, didn't work. So he tried to crush China economically and it really didn't work (trade imbalance grew; not shrunk with Trump).

Finally a virus. And all he had to do was nothing so it became a national emergency and he could then play savior.

This one is going to get away from him though. Don't know if anyone has been watching the USD versus every other currency, but essentially it is inflating. At an alarming rate.

This means US Exports have become too expensive to export. It means corporate profits coming into the US once converted are worth far less than before. It also means all those foreign countries (like China, Saudi) that hold treasuries have had their values inflated and earned hundreds of billions. Not only are they now worth more, but the yields they are paying are locked and are paying far more than what anyone else can now get - so they are worth even more AFTER calculating inflation that is taking place.

And it also means we are giving a real reason for other countries to abandon the USD as the reserve currency, and while every other currency required Foreign Reserves, we never did because we had the USD. There is horror on the horizon folks, and this administration won't be able to talk its way out.

Again, to harp, we were warned about printing forever in the US, and when the Fed tried to unwind the balance sheet, Trump simply spent more and lowered revenues (taxes), against the advice of virtually...everyone. The US is in a world of shit, more so than other countries.

We note the greats of history are the strongest just before they fall - like stock markets and currencies.

I have a weird question and this might be the only place to get someone who actually understands the underlying reasoning for the answers.

We're experiencing shortages of masks, as is every other country on the planet. Yes, 3M type respirators are meant to be one-time use disposable, because

1. The rules were written for any sort of situation where they may be used, not specifically for coronavirus
2. When there's plenty of masks there's no problem with tossing them each time you go outside and then back indoors, even if it's 5 minutes of exposure.

Because coronavirus is a virus, not a bacteria, and it cannot survive in high-heat dry environments, is it theoretically possible to reuse N95 respirators after potential exposure to corona-infected aerosol mist if you place the mask in a high heat, dry environment for enough time? For example, you have a stockpile of 10-15 masks and you rotate them, with used ones being placed on, for example, a hot radiator or heating unit, where the temperatures are constantly ~50 degrees C? Or maybe even a regular oven set to the lowest heat possible, like ~100 C or so. Obviously the masks will still be treated with care, hands washed before and after putting them on, etc.

Could this be a solution for people who have a limited supply of masks?

As always UK is ultrabased. I swear UK and poland are going to become the most wealthy countries in europe when this is done. It's gonna be an interesting fucking time to be alive.

The UK was due to overtake most of the other big states in Europe by about 2035 in terms of wealth, and there's no guessing what happens now with the UK and Poland likely pinwheeling to some sort of economic nationalism.

Main thing is, the EU's likely fucked. How Poland and the UK Capitalise on it after this crisis is the main question both states will have to ask. It will weaken EU's bargaining position too in any future negotiations as their own priorities will shift massively. Would it be better in their interests to have a friendly, large and wealthy state in their near abroad, or to continue the stupid arrogance? I know which one they'll likely take, but oh well.

Macaroni du baguette's just trying to pull the UK down with him. @DidYouJustSayThat already posted the french plan for the future and this makes it obvious that indeed it's trying to buttfuck the rest of europe in an attempt to be the least dicked by the end of this. Never trust the slimy gabacho. Not even the fanfarrones do so.

The French plan is exceptionally French, and Macroni still trying to bully around the UK right at a time the public is quite happy instructing their government into telling foreign governments where to fuck off with rather extensive instructions.

EDIT: And to be frank, I think that a lot of the travel bans that Trump has placed should remain until 2021. I would like for this to be the case so that we don't get the same kind of fuckery from China during a potential second wave.

It would also be the perfect opportunity to reduce globalism, I mean after all people are already talking about their lost jobs, hating China (in spite of the massive media cockmongling), and panicking about pretty much everything.

What better solution to all of this moving all the jobs back here while giving China the finger?

I mean Japan's already starting to do it, might as well join the uproaring bandwagon.

Hello communist khajiit
I see you have earned your $0.50 and one more social credit score.
Emperor Pooh Appreciates your blind loyalty.

I find interesting how some media outlets in Europe are quoting the Korean model to stop the spread of the virus, naming it one valuable and more than plausible alternative to the Chinese one. Thing is, the schism is obvious: the western individualism vs the groupal altruism of the east.

Still in lockdown in many parts of Europe. Hope you guys are stocking toilet paper/masks/hand sanitizer.

Speaking of that, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator has Tested positive for the Wuflu

The way I see it there are two possible major issues with that:

1. Too extreme temperatures may degrade or damage the masks filtration properties.
2. The use of a mask (i.e. your breath) will degrade the masks filtration properties.

I'm not an expert, but these are my guesses.

YouGov has released a report.

The UK is almost as chilled as the Scandinavian Countries, taking a fortnight of pandemic to reach 38% people being "worried" about COVID-19.

The Handwashing Campaign has worked well, with "personal hygiene" (aka following the campaign) as noticing personal hygiene has risen from 35% to 61% in just two weeks.

We also come bottom in other draconian measures, such as:

  • Avoiding all tourists (just 12%).
  • Refraining from touching any surfaces in public (30%)
  • Support of quarantining all Chinese Tourists (19%)
  • Quarantining any location a confirmed case has been (18%)
  • Providing free masks to everyone in the country, somehow (16%)

Basically, British attitude outside of some shopping has been Keeping Calm and Carrying on.
