Steven Universe - Now a Griefing Thread

I honestly don't understand the appeal of this show; from what little I've seen Steven is an emotionally stunted fat sissy that can't do anything right. I can understand having a pathetic character as your protagonist - watching them grow and overcome adversity is cathartic - but Steven is a charisma vacuum.
Because of the fauxmosexuals who obsess over how GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY they are and their lesbian rocks which is totally, like, almost like they kin with them?

And of course Becky's a tumblrina, as is all her staff, so they shove in every bullshit alphabet soup they can think of. No sane person enjoys it anymore. Some of the earlier plot driven episodes were okay, but when shit started getting retconned and "genocide is just like a dysfunctional family", it turned to irredeemable shit.

To be honest another gripe I've had as a geology guy is the intrusion of thess CalArts doodles into my Google searches for rocks or gemstones that share a name with an SU character.

Rock autism aside, I was always skeeved out by the way the transformation sequences were presented. It's ostensibly a kid's show, so why are these rock lesbians non-binary gem people twerking and gyrating like a whore in a nightclub to do the DBZ fusion dance?

Steven always reminded me of Shinji Ikari if Shinji’s default temperament was being loud with a bean mouth smile.

Was she EVER a character? (fuck the "they/them" bullshit, Stevonnie looks and sounds like a chick.)
Stevonnie, compared to other fusions, never felt like someone different from Connie and Steven. Everything she did is something both of them would do. Have fun on the beach, eat donuts, dance at parties, fight Gem monsters. The only thing they both couldn't do by themselves was race a car. As much as I can't stand Smokey Quartz, she's at least different from Amethyst and Steven. (she's their combined inferiority complexes so she's a helpful and sassy performer to hide that fact.)

Oni means demon troll in Japanese you know.
Well, when Stevonnie first appeared you could just chalk that up to first time fusion and then maybe they’d receive development over time. But admittedly, Stevonnie devolved into a walking plot device to have Connie and Steven talk to each other and then just an LGBT mascot later on. Which is a shame considering how the crew stressed that fusions were their own unique characters.

Well, that’s actually how the original series started and finished. Steven was originally the bumbling kid sidekick who mostly made jokes and had to unfuck the mess of the week he made. As the stakes got higher, Steven took things more seriously, had to learn how to empathize with his enemies but also learn that not everyone wants to be saved, helping others go through their problems, and becoming a better leader than his mother was. Then Future came along and turned him into Shinji Ikari with a bean mouth.

Also this. If the Gems were straight or had no explicit sexuality, the show would have been canned after season 1. Both the staff and fans can be disgustingly transparent that representation is all they really want from this show.

The Gem Empire vs The Reapers from Mass Effect

Its not a matter if they can do it, its about how many days will take for them to wipe them out of existence. The Gem Empire seems to exist in a retarded universe where weapons and high tech dont seem to exist. They would never be able to take on a species like the Krogan or especially the Turians who actually have a military and war knowledge. I doubt Steve would be able to "convince" Harbinger to stop being evil, he would most likely just vaporize him out of existance without batting an eye (we only saw him having some sort of interaction with significant threats like Shepard).
Either way, "it works if you dont think about it" as usual.

Who would win in a fight- Shepard, or "Shep"?

why is this even a question?
Shep- "I'm the token nonbinary tumblrina!"
Shepard- "I saved the universe from giant creature-melting cuttlefish"
Depending on how you look at it, Shepard is also "nonbinary". I personally prefer femShep myself, but plenty of others prefer "him" as a dude.

It’s hard to think of a sci-for civilization that doesn’t curbstomp the gems. The best pieces of tech they’ve shown off are FTL travel and tractor beams, which are standard issue on even the most cartoony flying saucer.

Marvin the Martian could kick their asses. He could blow Earth just for obstructing his view of Venus, that means he has Death Star tier weaponry at his disposal. Besides, he can be competent depending on the incarnation (I remember the Duck Dodgers cartoon version of him being quite threatening, tho of course he was still constantly made a fool out of)

People forget this easily, but actually the most overpowered piece of technology they showed is, in fact, time travel. They could create time travel devices to alter the past in whatever way they wanted. But I don't blame you, because Sugar seemed to forget the plothole how the gem empire could've prevented Pink's supposed death, and never tried, but I digress.

And, indeed, it isn't that impressive either considering most other sci-fi like Star Trek do time travel every week.

I guess the only advantage gems have is in their foot soldiers who would be supersoldiers on their own. Even Pearl who is a servant vastly outclasses any human in strength and endurance.

... but they would still be outclassed even by the modern military because they have a huge weakness. Just shoot them at their gems. Even in huge fusions, they have their gems exposed all the time, so theres no reason not to exploit that weakness.

Why are we talking about Mass Effect?

What are you guys on about?
From what I've seen it's largely an incredibly autistic "who could beat who" discussion, in this case it's about which alien races could take over and/or wipe out the Gem Empire.

As @An Account kind of pointed out it'd be easier to list the alien races that CAN'T beat the Gems and @The handsome tard provided a shining example of that by mentioning Marvin the Martian. Yes, a largely comedic alien from series of cartoons made before SU existed could EASILY wipe out the Gems without issue.

I never really watched the show, just some episodes and being interested in animation in general could't escape it, but it started as a show about happy boy and his 3 alien teachers that could be enjoyed by wider audience + "anime references made by people who actually grew up with toonami" and as it progressed, with all its "fusion metaphores" and all similar stuff, I just don't see an appeal for anybody who isn't super invested in LGBT community.

And I personally really like lighter, optimistic stories and idealistic heroes and it just drives me mad how badly this show approached those things.

RE : Crystal Gems vs Other Sci-Fi settings.

I don't feel we can really make any fair comparisons, Steven Universe's combat is so terribly choreographed and written that it is really difficult to gauge just how strong anything in the universe is. We never really saw anyone pushed to their limits in a fight, the Gems BTFO anyone who wasn't a Diamond and the Diamonds absolutely crushed the fuck out of everyone.

Which just states how bad the fights in the series have been tbh, We have no actual Clue what the Upper Limit's of Stephen's powers are, We never actually saw a Diamond in combat against a foe that was dangerous to them.

Yeah there’s nothing wrong with liking dark works but by that same token there’s nothing wrong with enjoying things that are lighter and inspirational. With SU, it’s comparable to Superman and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel; you take an optimistic and idealistic franchise and make it more morose and dreary to make it seem deep and appeal “older audiences”.

Yeah as someone mentioned earlier, while some works benefit from not revealing too much about its world, SU has no benefits for doing so.
The Diamonds and the Homeworld Gems are the main antagonists (scratch that, the only antagonists) of the show and yet in all the seven years it’s been on air, we still don’t know much about their world or culture; what is their main endgame besides just propagating their race, why is the caste system enforced, what do gems do in their off time, their origins, etc. When I know more about Onion’s motivations than White Diamond’s, there’s a problem.
