Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

US:
191 deaths
108 recoveries

I recall early in the thread talk of China's numbers and comparing deaths vs recoveries being important.
Why more deaths than recovered? Is it just too early in to see recoveries?
God only knows what to believe about China's numbers, but I remember the deaths vs recoveries being like this at first there too. From what I have heard you can still test positive even after your condition improves, so there is a little bit of lag before someone goes into the "recovered" column. I believe the U.S. requires two negative tests to be considered recovered. I am not sure what China's criteria was.

Who knows what will happen when the hospitals reach capacity though. I can see there being a few Italy situations springing up around the U.S.

Does not matter, this kind of talk discourages all preparation and will kill people, just because there is 0,001% of people, who get too much toilet paper, is not an excuse to advocate people to potentially kill themselves by going to shop too often.
Your just-in-time access to TP is not as important as people's lives. Learn to do without or prepare like sane people.
I agree, I think it's a much safer idea to do one big trip than to keep going back go the stores. Especially if you're near a hot zone the stores are not safe to be in right now and all these memos from companies promising they're keeping the safety of the customers and their employees in mind are pretty much bullshit as is "senior shopping hour" which is a lovely idea that no one is actually enforcing.

The stores are full of coofers and their window licking children going apeshit because they can't stand being cooped up in their house and the "deep cleaning" amounts to someone half assedly swishing around a Clorox wipe on the soda coolers.

Maybe some companies are getting it right, but I haven't heard anything to that effect from the people who work for any of the big grocery chains or big boxes. Big boxes are especially bad because people are milling around browsing non-essential shit like makeup and clearance tablecloths. Maybe they want a last hurrah with cheap shit from China.

A Starbucks employee at my local Target tested positive, the store is certainly not advertising this or shutting Starbucks down. They didn't even tell the other employees working there that they were exposed. Just stuff for people to keep in mind, shit is getting real.

Not to downplay it by any means, but that was one isolated event that affected a specific area and a specific number of people in terms of sheer physical trauma. This however is a global, ongoing issue that's already causing untold damage in every way possible, from physical and mental health to economics and societal infrastructure.

On a sheer shock and horror level 9/11 is worse, but in terms of sheer lasting repercussions and suffering, this is the biggest tragedy of our age. And we've only seen the start.

The sliver lining is the hope that unlike 9/11 which led to a bunch of bullshit, Corona-chan will bring some positive changes when her rampage is done (indeed, it could be argued we're already seeing some of them).

Okay, so let's start with the claim that it was an isolated incident. There was as I recall a whole plane of people who allegedly stormed the cockpit and took down the plane to stop one of the attacks effectively sacrificing themselves for the greater good of their country.

As for the second highlighted bit, that seems a bit optimistic. I think in the long run this whole Corona virus thing is going to forgotten shortly after it's all said and done like pretty much every tragedy in modern years post 9/11. This sort of statement is something I'd expect from a teenager. It really reeks of an inability to learn from history.

I feel you, but I'm not going to be worried about my rights when I'm choking to death on my phlegm because the ChiComs refused to send us a tiny circuit board for a ventilator.
The problem is unless we write all of all of this emergency shit correctly we never get those rights back, You don't worry about your rights now, but you sure as hell will start worrying in a year when all this shit is done with and we are still under "A state of emergency" because the government NEVER GIVES UP ITS POWER.

There are "National Emergencies" from the 70s Carter Administration that are still active.

Edit : To make an example, remember how many of us will say "I WILL NOT LIVE IN A POD. I WILL NOT EAT BUGS" well right now, people in San Fransisco are currently stuck in their pods. Who says that big Daddy Newsom will give up the power to make you stay in your fucking pod slave.

It was still an event that happened in specific amount of time to a specific number of places (as in the actual incident, obviously the aftermath effects linger to this day). Corona is not only affecting the entire world as we know it, but it's been going for several months and looks to go on for a long while yet.

Humanity has never seen an outbreak of this magnitude in the modern era, certainly not one to the point where entire countries are shutting down and borders are closing at a lightening pace. The other post-9/11 tragedies like fires, school shootings, hurricanes or whatever other disasters have been easily forgotten because they've always been localized events. It's going to be a lot harder to forget one that's, in one way or another, directly affecting untold millions of people across the planet simultaneously for such an extended period of time as this.

Dude reedit that photo. That transparent brush and reflection still allows anyone that knows how to zoom in figure out shit that you do not want them to know.

The Mayor of New York City has requested military intervention. De Blasio has officially broken with Cuomo. You want to see political fault lines, here in stark contrast is the split between the mayor of New York city and the governor of the state of New York. In theory the governor is the superior but for some time this has been a question. On all fronts.

The Federal Military cannot intervene without Cumomos approval. This is probably gonna exasperate the New York and Long Island secession movement. Pro move Cuomo! If NYC and Long Island fuck off upstate New York will make you governor for life!

And the Military, both the State Nation Guard Units, and the Active Duty Federal Military will tell deBlasio to Fuck Right Off, and to give his request to the New York State Governor. "Mayor of New York" is not Civil Leadership as far as the Military is concerned. deBlasio is nobody. His demands wont be answered (deBlasio does not request, he demands.). If he starts any shit, they would just shoot him.

I don't know if I'd compare it to 9/11. I'd say 9/11 was much worse in my opinion. Don't forget that there were people who had to make the choice to either face the smoke and choke to death or jump and splatter of the ground. This isn't anywhere close to as gut wrenching as what happened to those people. Not by a long shot.

I agree with you, but my brain is insisting on the caveat "for now."

In some parts of the US, that gut wrenching grief is already hitting. People are seeing loved ones die some really unpleasant deaths. That's gonna increase in frequency and it's gonna happen in more places before we come out the other side of Sars 2: Pneumonic Boogaloo.

There has been mention of a particularly nasty pneumonia-thing that a few people seem to have picked up around November of last year. My dad and I both had it, and it was a real fucker. We figured he likely picked it up while traveling for work, and the rest of the immediate family was exposed through the usual family social visits. Others had a relatively easy time of it, but dad and I needed 3 weeks or more to fully get over it.

This mystery illness acted like a routine mild cold for the first few days. Low-grade fever, sore throat and postnasal drip. You know, the usual.

The second stretch was far worse. Dunno about dad, but I honestly thought I was fully recovered before it roared back with a vengeance. At the time, I thought "for fuck's sake I get better from one thing and immediately catch another." In hindsight, perhaps not.

This second wave, if we want to call it that, is where the pneumonia symptoms appeared. Several days of fever, significant shortness of breath and coughing violent enough to wake the dead. I actually fractured a rib thinking I could try to force my cough to be productive because I'm fucking stupid. Whisky and honey were a better answer to that; eventually I did get into productive cough territory.

My fever topped out just shy of 103ºF (39º C ish) before it finally broke after 4 or 5 days. Interestingly, there was some diarrhea around the time the fever subsided. No nausea, even during the height of the fever.

The cough and some general shortness of breath persisted for a couple weeks, after which there might still have been lingering lung damage but I wasn't physically active enough to notice if there was. My throat and voice were absolutely wrecked for quite some time, though. Dunno what would've caused that.

I didn't take any fever-reducing medications, working on the folk wisdom that I really should let my body do its thing if at all possible. My finger was on the metaphorical button, though. Without PLing too much, I have a stupid autoimmune thing which requires that I be on the lookout for my body to hurt itself in its confusion.

As far as I can tell, 3 months past the end of that mess I have no appreciable "sequelae." The rib got better, obviously. The throat as well, which is good because I lean pretty heavily on my voice in the course of daily work and life. I can jog at a brisk pace for well over a mile without needing to rest, so if my heart and lungs got fucked at all it seems I'm still too young to notice.

ETA:
Oh fuck...
You got it and fucking ALR is fine. WHAT THE EVERLOVING FUCK?!

Again I really think we ought to add... "for now."

I have pneumonia right now, in isolation.
Let us know how you're doing and if you need anything.

I get that but we're really fucked, thanks to China. I've gotten a bad feeling that after we get to back to normal (or close to it) there's going to be the possibility of some kind of conflict.

I rated you optimistic because there are a handful of people who would care if de Blasio gets put down and it's probably his immediate family. At his performance at Thursday's press conference he was like a slightly more coherent Biden after a few shots of whisky. He's an absolute clown.

I'm going back in to the fray tomorrow.
limited PPE.
one of my colleagues is dead already; I'm younger but I'm still not willing to take any risk at all. Will walk out before I work unprotected.

I'll be back in 5 or 6 days if I know anything more. Wish me luck.

Well it would all be avoidable if the people in our government weren't massively corrupt assholes every emergency measure we implement on a federal level would be passed through both Chambers and have at the end "This bill expires in six months and can only be renewed with 100% of the vote in both chambers." so that if we need to continue it must be an absolute emergency.

Nobody likes the Patriot act now right? Even the guy who fucking WROTE the damn thing says it needs to be repealed. Well it was set to expire this year and SOMEHOW DESPITE NOBODY WANTING IT The Establishment still renewed it.

Just got some interesting information.
Apparently Googles top paying customer in google ad revenue is travel agency booking.
Since Google only really gets its revenue from ads, Google is now bleeding money for possibly months. Very Cool.

The world is definitely 100% not ever going to be the same after this. Everyone is getting stung by this virus.

@Otterly how do you take a medicine in tablet form with a tube down your throat?
[/QUOTE]
you don't, that shit isn't used to actually treat this, it's a stock manipulation by trump, that's all

Dont worry I am keeping positive and have what I need here, plenty of breathing treatments and such, just blows because I am compromised. The hospital would have admitted me but since there are cases at that hospital doctor set me up at home and i am safer here than in the hospital.

I got this the last week of November and ended up with an intercostal muscle tear from the coughing. My boyfriend got over it relatively quickly but I still had a nasty dry cough until a couple weeks ago... when I started to get shortness of breath instead, followed by a horrid five-day headache, then muscle aches, a low-grade fever, productive cough, and general malaise. I self-isolated this week, just in case.

Update: I have been feeling some chest tightness for the past 4-5 days, maybe a little more. Also some phlegminess in the back of my throat, but it is spring and that means pollen season may be on us, I hope it's just my allergies. I am somewhat asthmatic (have to use an inhaler very rarely but am not on any daily steroid therapy). I've also got perpetually congested sinuses due to some nose shit that I have never gotten sorted out. No fever and I feel perfectly energetic and fine otherwise.

Semper Fi to all the sick Kiwis.

Saw this, virus and ICU hospital beds. (ICU = intensive care unit)
Pink is infected out of 100k, blue is hospital beds out of 100k.

China only has 3.6 for each 100k, substantiating to what I said hundreds of pages ago. China does not have much medical equipment and doctors per capita. Locking Wuhan down was the right choice. Italy is basically Hubei now.

17/2, patient count exceeds bed count, nasty.
According to the graph, it seems like Germany and America would do alright, unless patient count far exceeds the number of beds.

Here's some more information...
1584691973507.png

Normal hospital beds per 100 people:
1584691994489.png

Seems like Asian countries have it better in this case. Lots of normal hospital beds.

Hubei is fucking lucky, they are in the middle of China, it's a pretty alright tier 2 province to begin with. The state can just shift resources from Jiang, Zhe, and Shanghai, the 3 tier 1 province/districts to help Hubei. Imagine Hubei without any help from the rest of China, I'd imagine a death toll well above 30%.

Still hoping to see a scientific consensus of the virus' spawn and spread.

Note: The "critical conditions" is an estimate. The author assumes 1 out of 5 are in critical condition. I think unless one's in Italy, they are going to be fine.
