Places like China benefit massively from the near-crippling costs the United States incurs by making sure freedom of navigation and equitable trade are a thing. Yes, the US benefits from this but so does literally everyone else that chooses to participate. The United States and its president absolutely have a responsibility to keep the fundamentals of the national economy in place because that allows it to ensure the world economy remains somewhat stable, like it or not.

The United States holds ultimate power on planet earth and pays dearly every moment it continues to do so. Yes there are unique benefits that only the United States enjoys, but there are massive benefits all-around that a nation like China in its current form would never be okay with. For some nations, nobody else is allowed to do good if it means that the homeland only gets a 9/10 on the "how good is this for us" scale when it could be a 10/10 and everyone else can screw off.

Can you even fathom how much worse this whole situation would be if the US decided to scrap all of its carrier strike groups to balance the budget and let the world figure it out? Who is going to fill that gap? The Chinese? The Russians? The Europeans? Get real, dude. It would be a golden age of piracy that would make Henry Morgan blush... right before he died of the China Virus because the medical precursors to make his pills are stuck 4000 miles away, the tubes for his ventilator are somewhere in bumfuck Europe, and the fabricator in Milwaukee can't get the bolts he needs to fasten together the hospital beds because the ship carrying them got shitslammed by a bunch of Russian Yaks and dragged into port somewhere.

When I think about it, about the only other country that every seriously engages in any anti-piracy measures is ironically France.

I only mentioned brain damage because someone said that being on a vent would cause that after 7 days which is not true. In these COVID cases these patients who are sick enough to go on a vent are in full blown ARDS who are likely going to suffer from pulmonary fibrosis anyway if they recover. In a normal setting we have an ARDS net protocol and practice low volume, lung protective strategies to minimize lung stiffening and maintain compliance. I watched where you time stamped the video and I didn’t see him talking about vents causing lung damage? Yea of course you don’t want to be on a vent for an extended period, think about it.. if a machine is doing all of your work of breathing for you, your diaphragm and accessory muscles gets weak after some time. You’re going to need rehab. But saying the vent is causing lung damage isn’t necessarily true.

I'm wondering about that too. I guess they have the manpower and tools but the lines themselves I dont think are that flexable for something smaller than a vehicle. Something is better than nothing though but i'll bet most of the news outlets are thinking ( and pushing) they'll be rolling them off a line like they do cars.

I used to work in the injection/blow-molding industry, which supplied HVAC components to GM & Chryco (Delphi & some now-defunct shops); ducting & dash subassemblies, mostly. Unless something changed in the last 30 years, every shop I worked for horded old molds; those things are expensive, intricate, and often a fucking pain in the ass to move.
Sometimes they got remanned, but usually the molds rolled out of blueprinting and stored indefinitely, even if they were only used for a single run.

I remember back in the darkest recesses of the prototyping & storage areas, there were always mothballed molds for national-defense related shit; i.e. nuclear/biological/chemical system components in trucks & tanks.

I don't doubt that somewhere, GM's had old tooling stored they can repurpose; those aluminum molds are also easily remanned/modified as well.
