I don't think he is qualified to make judgments about doctors using experimental treatments for a novel virus in a life and death situation. I guess if a kid in middle school really loves his math class and says he wants to get a career in math based off of his experience so far, adults will say go for it, we're glad you have a passion. I doubt anyone is going to sneer, "Well, actually, professional mathematics are much more complex than the silly little equations you have been solving," since he'll learn that as he grows up, and people don't generally like crushing children's hopes and dreams for no reason.

But when a grown man, taking middle school level math, says the same thing, it's not so cute anymore. Even without the math experience, he should have enough life experience to recognize that comparing algebra and career-level statistics is like comparing apples to oranges. Good for him if he enjoys his classes, but it's going to be a while before he can extrapolate from his school experience to potential real-world experience. You'd think a guy with such a great relationship with his stepkids would recognize that their high school math homework is already a step above what he's doing in college.

A friend of mine quipped that one benefit of Fascism for soldiers is they could dress like that and nobody dared laugh.
