Welp. Tonight's briefing from the PM was anything but.

Instead it was a message.

All shops are now to be shut unless they provide food.

Gatherings of more than TWO people can be dispersed by the Police.

No visiting family members if they are not in the same household.

Where possible, use delivery services.

How about you worry about actual fucking Solutions to the problem we are talking about in this thread instead of you reeing about "THE WAL-MART" like the stupid Union Shills that have legit come into my place of work to harass me while I am trying to do my job to sign up for their stupid ass fucking union scam. How about you worry about the actual businesses and people being affected by this.

You make about a tenth as much money as I do, and you immediately start yelling at people trying to help you.

lol

Low earners in New England should have their heating bills forgiven
I dunno about New England, but Low Earners around here can already get rebate checks for Heating Bills during the Winter.

Companies should be given incentives to not furlough or fire employees right now.

The biggest Incentive to do that is not completely going out of business, There is a lady I know who was going to open up a Dog Care Business at the start of the month, she had 3 people who she had already hired and was training to open at the start of April. Now? She is already a month in the hole, before she even opens up her shop she is considering closing up shop permmanently.

Get to the root of the problem, to keep people in their homes and family together and healthy.

Already having people stay at home, which is the entire economic problem. America is a Service Economy now, and guess what happens when Service stops? The Entire Economy Stops.

Food pantries should open. Grab your box of goods and get the fuck out of the stores.
Things already in play.

And the banks need to forgive their mortgage, and the landlord's mortgage.
Or, they do the sensible things..and say "Hey just don't worry about it for the moment, we will figure it out in a couple of months.

The burden should be on the billionaires
BILLIONAIRES BAD HILLARY TOLD ME SO.

Wondervirus is never going away.
No, but the panic will pass and that is the only Dangerous thing. The Virus was never a real problem, it is a Virus. People will get sick for a few weeks, feel like shit and in 6 months be over it, many will get it and not even realize they had it. The real problem is the Panic and the Fear. Middle America is afraid right now, they are afraid of getting sick, they are afraid of this not passing, they are afraid of losing everything they worked for because everything is shut down.

Do you know what will help with that?

"Here is a check to keep you fed and keep you in a home while you hunker down."

"Hey, guess what..no payroll taxes for, no income taxes for anyone making less than a certain amount"

"Hey, no Gas Taxes for the next 3 months so that shipping companies don't have to worry about that."

"Hey, Businesses especially small ones everyone gets a 0% interest Loan to cover anything that you can pay back once things are stable." but big ones should get it too because even large companies like say AMC Theaters who are completely shut down..are being hurt as well.

The Republicans are trying to do 2 of those things, which is better than none, the Democrats are trying to play their normal stupid ass game of "We are for the small people" while advocating for things that will do absolutely nothing to actually god damn help.

You make about a tenth as much money as I do, and you immediately start yelling at people trying to help you.
Because they aren't doing anything worth a fucking damn.

UK now in full lockdown. Police to enforce (query whether there are sufficient numbers of police, or whether army will be needed to assist).

full text of PM broadcast:

Good evening,

The coronavirus is the biggest threat this country has faced for decades – and this country is not alone.

All over the world we are seeing the devastating impact of this invisible killer

And so tonight I want to update you on the latest steps we are taking to fight the disease and what you can do to help.

And I want to begin by reminding you why the UK has been taking the approach that we have.

Without a huge national effort to halt the growth of this virus, there will come a moment when no health service in the world could possibly cope; because there won’t be enough ventilators, enough intensive care beds, enough doctors and nurses.

And as we have seen elsewhere, in other countries that also have fantastic health care systems, that is the moment of real danger.
To put it simply, if too many people become seriously unwell at one time, the NHS will be unable to handle it – meaning more people are likely to die, not just from coronavirus but from other illnesses as well.
So it’s vital to slow the spread of the disease.
Because that is the way we reduce the number of people needing hospital treatment at any one time, so we can protect the NHS’s ability to cope – and save more lives.
And that’s why we have been asking people to stay at home during this pandemic.
And though huge numbers are complying – and I thank you all – the time has now come for us all to do more.
From this evening I must give the British people a very simple instruction – you must stay at home.
Because the critical thing we must do is stop the disease spreading between households.
That is why people will only be allowed to leave their home for the following very limited purposes:
  • shopping for basic necessities, as infrequently as possible
  • one form of exercise a day – for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household;
  • any medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person; and
  • travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home.
That’s all – these are the only reasons you should leave your home.

You should not be meeting friends. If your friends ask you to meet, you should say No.
You should not be meeting family members who do not live in your home.
You should not be going shopping except for essentials like food and medicine – and you should do this as little as you can. And use food delivery services where you can.
If you don’t follow the rules the police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings.
To ensure compliance with the Government’s instruction to stay at home, we will immediately:
  • close all shops selling non-essential goods, including clothing and electronic stores and other premises including libraries, playgrounds and outdoor gyms, and places of worship;
  • we will stop all gatherings of more than two people in public – excluding people you live with;
  • and we’ll stop all social events, including weddings, baptisms and other ceremonies, but excluding funerals.
Parks will remain open for exercise but gatherings will be dispersed.
No prime minister wants to enact measures like this.
I know the damage that this disruption is doing and will do to people’s lives, to their businesses and to their jobs.
And that’s why we have produced a huge and unprecedented programme of support both for workers and for business.
And I can assure you that we will keep these restrictions under constant review. We will look again in three weeks, and relax them if the evidence shows we are able to.
But at present there are just no easy options. The way ahead is hard, and it is still true that many lives will sadly be lost.
And yet it is also true that there is a clear way through.
Day by day we are strengthening our amazing NHS with 7500 former clinicians now coming back to the service.
With the time you buy – by simply staying at home – we are increasing our stocks of equipment.
We are accelerating our search for treatments.
We are pioneering work on a vaccine.
And we are buying millions of testing kits that will enable us to turn the tide on this invisible killer.
I want to thank everyone who is working flat out to beat the virus.
Everyone from the supermarket staff to the transport workers to the carers to the nurses and doctors on the frontline.
But in this fight we can be in no doubt that each and every one of us is directly enlisted.
Each and every one of us is now obliged to join together.
To halt the spread of this disease.
To protect our NHS and to save many many thousands of lives.
And I know that as they have in the past so many times.
The people of this country will rise to that challenge.
And we will come through it stronger than ever.
We will beat the coronavirus and we will beat it together.
And therefore I urge you at this moment of national emergency to stay at home, protect our NHS and save lives.
Thank you.

It would all be over so much faster if people would stay the fuck home. It's like the average american is just one missed football game and college party away from civil war 2.0 but even Italians are starting to get the message as the numbers in the rest of the world are beginning to hit a curve, while the US skyrockets, and that's with the heavy under reporting going on.

I am not too far from the NYC area, and there are a lot of people still in the mindset of "well if it hits us it hits us, I'm not going to stop living my life". They really don't get that there is no "if", it's not a hurricane that is going to swerve at the last minute.

Not that I don't know a lot of people who are taking it seriously and quarantining too, but man, people around here are notoriously jaded and a lot won't believe it until they see it unfortunately. It's giving me so much goddamned anxiety, watching it from a (not nearly far enough) distance.

Really, people do not understand numbers.
Walmart does 1.5 trillion in sales. Their net income for the year was 9.8 billion. Think how slim that margin is. Now imagine all those walmart workers getting 2-5$ an hour wage increases, along with paid health insurance and paid time off. That would utterly bankrupt the company.

The ACA fucked over places like walmart, ironically. Used to be you could work there "part time" for 60-70 hours a week. However much was available. Then you could pay for doctors and medication out of pocket with cash, usually at a heavily discounted rate. It had problems, sure, but hard workers could make it work.

Then Obamacare flew in like a diseased shoe. Now you were limited to 34 hours a week, oh and you have to be on call all the time because we have to play a constant balancing game with hours so you cant hold a second job so sucks to be you now. And now many doctors refuse to take cash, some still will, but especially specialists require you to have insurance, because $$$. So now the part time worker is double screwed, and wal mart ends up with more churn and less useful employees which harms sales and drives up costs.

Retail workers are low skill with tons of available laborers. Nothing against people whom work retail for whatever reason, but the reality is when there is an oversupply of workers in a field that takes no specialized skill to get into wages will not be high, neither will benefits.
I fully believe healthcare should be widely available, but the way for obamacare to do that would have simply been to open public enrollment into medicare before age 65 for a pemium while enabling medicare to negotiate drug prices.

But that was cut because the democrats couldnt have someone threaten their corporate masters, and now you have a huge selection of people forced to work hours in jobs where they cannot get by financially, forded to work when sick, and helping to spread things like coronavirus. Under the old system, workers who worked hard would have money from extra hours hopefully socked away for a rainy day, the ones who didnt work hard are fucked regardless. Under the current system all the part time workers are fucked.

1.5 million US Walmart employees 6 weeks vacation at $7.50 per hour (40 hours per week) equals $2.7 billion.
The vacation time alone assuming no other costs (people to cover those shifts ect) would cost at least $2.7 billion a year.

Armed security in the eggs and dairy section in some places.

And what do you think about it? Feels eerie, really. Like your government went full 180 degrees in a couple weeks. I wasn't expecting such a brutal lockdown.

UK Lockdown is not going to go down well; colour me optimistic but I kinda want some rioting to happen. Nurgle has been rewarded so mays well treat Khorne to it instead.

Things for non-UK kiwis Boris cut an insane amount of police officers there are less than 100,000 and that is including non front line this is admins etc. For example my city of 150,000 has 30 cops who can arrest etc.

Boris is expecting this for 3 weeks it is not going to last, plus his party is planning to vote of no confidence if this fails.

Some top notch social distancing there.
How long until US goes full lockdown because people can't self regulate?

Not long, I imagine.

My state hasn't gone into lockdown yet, but there are people (including healthcare professionals) urging the governor to order it, to get ahead of it before it gets worse. Hell, if that bit about corona-chan living for three days max on plastic is true, maybe just a week would be enough to do it?

I don't know. I'm getting anxious thinking of what this will all look like a month from now.
