Remember than our numbers are possibly exagerated by our policy, and Germany/france/Italy's are definitely underreported by theirs, though not as much as China's. So the US can expect a higher number of deaths per capita than us if they don't manage to slow it down enough. And we are using Trump's magic drug, so I can tell you, it works better than most, it is certainly worth it, but... It's no magic and won't save everyone.

It's not really surprising that their numbers have slowed way down when their measures have been as extreme as they have. Of course their overall numbers are still way off, and with that we can also question if they really peaked and started to drop off that early, or if that is manipulated.

They locked people inside their apartments and quarantined off entire regions, but I seriously doubt that this was even remotely enough to prevent the sickness from spreading like wildfire in the rest of their nation. Given how quickly and easily it spreads, there is bound to be people who will spread it. Given how the PLA was deployed here and there, that certainly didn't help contain it either.

I neither believe their official total, nor do I believe that the virus slowed down at all during the last few weeks.

The co-op near me also installed plexiglass at the registers since the last time I was there about a week ago and is asking people to pay with cards and not cash whenever possible.

Ya, saw that at Costco yesterday. The Base Exchange (military department store) has also asked people to pay with cards vice cash.

Yesterday was supposed to have been the start of the baseball season.

In view of all that is happening, here are my predictions re pro sports.

The baseball season starts on 1 June. Games may temporarily be moved out of cities where there are large numbers of cases, such as New York. However many games they get in is the season. Postseason play starts as scheduled.

The NBA and NHL seasons are over. In normal times, these leagues' playoffs go well into June. Then the seasons begin again in October. This will be the year without a league champion in these sports.

The NFL should be largely unaffected. Training camps start in late July. Minicamps for some teams previous to that time may need to be moved. Season should start on time in September.

Not positives. DEATHS. We don't use comorbidities as excuaes, you do. We test the dead. You don't. We mark those dead during known outbreak as corona casualties before testing them. You don't mark them as corona at all unless already tested and no comorbidities found.

I'd say your actual corona deaths are well well over 10 times what's reported. Ours might actually be a little less than what was reported. Big difference.

The New York State Academy of Family Physicians is calling for a ban of all tobacco and vaping products statewide due to the increased risk of COVID-19 in those who use tobacco.
Based on a study by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, one factor that influences the progression of COVID-19 is a person’s history of smoking.
The study suggests that “patients who use tobacco are 14 times as likely to have COVID-19 progression.” According to The National Institute of Drug Abuse, this is because the coronavirus attacks the lungs, and people who vape or smoke tobacco are more susceptible to the virus becoming a serious threat.
“Now more than ever, it is critical for the State and medical community to take actions to prevent our youth from ever using these highly addictive, deadly products and to help our patients to reduce their risks through FDA-approved cessation and telehealth during this pandemic,” says Barbara Keber, president of the group that represents more than 6,000 family physicians and medical students in New York.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has taken previous measures to cut down on vaping. In late February, Cuomo launched campaigns to ban flavored tobacco products, announced a texting program for those who want to quit vaping, launched a website with non-smoking resources and created hashtag #NoVapeNY.
“New York is leading the nation in confronting this new and deadly epidemic,” says Cuomo.
The NYSAFP has supported the ongoing legislation to end the sale of flavored tobacco products and calls on Cuomo to consider their proposal in the budget.
“Bold, swift actions must be taken to protect our residents and we must follow the science which supports our call for a ban,” says Keber.

i tried quitting January 1 with the patch. By the 3rd a coworker bought me a pack of smokes.
Its probable that the act of smoking is infecting people, due to hand->face all day long. Plus the damage to lungs etc.

I'm fairly certain that testing is being held back due to pressure from corporations that don't want to loose income. They are telling workers in nearly every industry that they are essential.

I put this shit in a spoiler because I need somewhere to rant. The Canadian government is worried about foreign aid during a global emergency. If we don't have the PPE or equipment to fight this properly, why should we be worrying if foriegn powers get paid?

I just got a phonecall I've been dreading. The RCMP found my sister dead in her hotel room. I'm waiting to hear from my bro, who is waiting on the coroner. We were waiting for this to happen, she was a drug user for a long, long time. I haven't seen her in a decade. Still fucks my head up. Fucking hard drugs man, not even once.

What worries me about COVID is that it seems to be hitting people that may have had no idea they even had a condition until COVID put their body under stress. My local PHL (Public Health Nurse, usually does vaccinations etc) and I were talking about what viruses can cause damage to other organs, back when the flu shot for 19-20 was out.

I wasn't aware that pretty much any virus left unchecked can cause organ damage that won't be noticed until the body is put under intense duress. Strep throat especially is known to cause cardiovascular damage, and we consider that to be a minor virus most of the time.

This is stated by Anders Tegnell, state epidemiologist at the Public Health Authority, at Friday's press conference.
According to Tegnell, however, it is not a sudden increase that the figure can give off, yesterday's figure was 66, but that Stockholm went through more patients who died during the week.
Over 3,000 people have now been confirmed to be infected with covid-19 in Sweden. Anders Tegnell says that there are now more than 200 people at IVA in Sweden.
"It's hard to know where we are going," he says.
At the press conference, Tegnell also reports that the authorities have produced new graphics with a map showing the intensity of the spread in different locations in Sweden, which is updated daily at 14.00. The public should be able to access the figures that form the basis of the graphics.
The work at present still largely revolves around leveling the curve. Anders Tegnell says that the situation in Stockholm is under pressure but that there are resources available. They have not had the sudden development in the number of cases they have had in, for example, Italy and Spain, according to Tegnell.
Johanna Sandwall at the National Board of Health and Welfare says that the authority continues to focus on providing the best possible conditions for healthcare to cope with the situation.
- We signed an agreement yesterday that will provide 200 respirators from the company Getinge.
According to Johanna Sandvall, many companies and organizations have contacted and offered help, and thank you for the support. Among other things, they have received donations with personal protective equipment from the Chinese companies Geely and Alibaba.
Additional support will also be requested from the Armed Forces, in several regions.

The Swedish government also just banned public gatherings over 50 people. In other words, celebrities such as Özz "Hirer of illicit terrorist workers" Nûjen who were planning to bypass the former limit of 500 by hosting shows with 499 people will now have to host shows with only 49 people.

This was announced by Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) at a press conference. They also announced the following:
The Public Health Authority will provide more detailed guidelines on how to live your life.
Another 200 respirators will be delivered to Sweden.
The decision to ban gatherings with more than 50 people will take effect on Sunday.
Anyone who violates the rules of public gatherings can be fined or imprisoned for up to six months.
In practice, it will be all the general events where the rules of the law apply that will be affected. But it is hoped by the Public Health Authority that the decision will have a normative effect and means that people also limit private events.
Formally, for example, gyms and restaurants are not affected.
The police can prevent or stop gatherings that violate the rules. So far, however, the police have not had to do so, according to Andersen Police Chief of Police.
There are currently no plans to isolate Stockholm.
"In a very short time, many people have changed our way of life, and we have done that out of respect for our fellow human beings and not least to give the healthcare a chance to cope with this," he says.
Anyone who in this situation violates rules takes on a very heavy responsibility, according to the prime minister.
- The understanding of the seriousness of the crisis must be shared by everyone.
The Prime Minister also urges those who do not have to travel on Easter not to do so.
The Public Health Authority will provide more detailed guidelines on how to live your life.
In conclusion, Löfven emphasizes that it is a difficult situation we are in.
- But it is also true that we all have to take responsibility. We will never be able to legislate on anything or ban all harmful behaviors. This is also a matter of popular vote, says the prime minister.

That's still setiously not close to enough. And they're acting way too late. Dunno about sweeden's death reporting protocols but assuming perfect reporting getting to triple digit deaths is when shit should've started to lockdown hardcore already. And sweeden's hitting it tomorrow for sure. Reunions of up to 49 mean each of those 49 will be a vector for their families, friends and work pals afterwards.

So where I am at today is that in my city we have a total of now 8 officially confirmed infected. The age range is scattered, first infected officially admitted to the hospital was a woman in her 60's. Rumor going around is that our one hospital has a floor full of em already, 50 or so, but the health unit is still waiting for test results. Test results have a median of 5 days and a maximum of 7 days, so in regards of testing we are at least a fucking week behind. So that one week lag in testing, on top of the 2 week incubation time, means in essence that we are probably at least 3 weeks behind in actually knowing the real numbers today. People are getting very pissed off with the local authority, considering that they are obviously bullshitting the locals, and the locals are not taking it too kindly. I live in a smaller community. not as densely populated, but we have a lot of Americans and Toronto people crossing through here every day. Most of the other confirmed cases are exactly that, people coming from Toronto or the US. I have a friend who I spoke with the other day on the phone that taps into the EMS and cop feeds, and he is hearing the viral pneomina cases being WAY HIGHER than reported.

The hospital back in January apparently already had COVID precautions in place. So very likely there has been community spread since the beginning of February, and now they are finally slowly coming out with the possibility that this thing has been spreading around like gonorrhea. Michigan getting hammered how it is doesn't surprise me, because of the population density. The American kids come DT and try to drink here too, and DT is notorious for being a filth/shit pit. So I can already assume that this thing has been around longer than anyone has realized, and the media hype made the sheeple who panic bought to all infect or reinfect each other. What a glorious shit show, I guess slowly preparing, and not jumping into crowds paid off for me this time. I guess all of those shit tickets and hand sanitizer did nothing to combat an aerosol based virus, that even blowing in the wind the wrong way could turn your lungs into glass.

Yesterday I posted about the chaos that followed when Kenyan police tried to implement the social distancing order at the Likoni ferry crossing.
Now the paramilitary wing of Kenyan police, General Service Unit (GSU) (archive) officers have taken over the Likoni ferry crossing channel in Mombasa.

The normally chaotic scenes at the channel changed abruptly Thursday following the presence of the dreaded police unit.
At the waiting bay, the Nation witnessed hundreds of commuters standing in straight lines as directed by the officers.

I don't know what I was expecting. Maybe that GSU would enforce the social distancing order, but no. My mistake.

However, the one metre social distancing was not being observed both at the waiting area and in the ferries.
Once released from the waiting area, the commuters could be seen heading into the ferry and standing in small groups.

Talk about an exercise in futility.

About remote working at home. If the company won't give you a work computer don't put tracking software on it for them. Tell them it's a family computer and you won't feel comfortable with them listening in your conversation with Aunt June about his bastard of a husband and her hussy secretary.

The problem with this especially if you work in a SOC is your network is in theory not secure, you have a VPN and your firewall not your SOCs office defences. When you are trying to monitor over 1000 clients with a work model that is not suited its a lot harder e.g. I use 5 monitors now I am down to 2, so efficiency is cut a lot. You cannot meet effectively with your clients due to GCHQ they survey everything so face to face is good for security reasons. The people around you like the receptionist are great though as they are your team - I work in a really good workplace so it is very family centric.

Again they are on about this lasting for 6 months, one of the companies has 100% market share in how cyber security is handled for small to medium companies but also handles insurance too and doing that from home is nigh on impossible.

I feel bad the the tech guys its not fun lol.

That's very concerning, considering that it's been assumed that children (even babies) are less susceptible to the virus. It's scary to think that children aren't as safe as we thought. Hopefully that case is an outlier and the baby recovers.
