  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.

How will Bob react to seeing the Mario film?

It could also be about the Robert Downey Jr. movies. Although if we're honest about it, Doyle had a lot of that bullshit in his OG writing too.
Well, I know how RDJ-Holmes would kill three guys: with his bare hands, because super-intelligence makes you a ninja who can see the future.

I'd protest that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was not a stupid man by any means, but the guy did believe in fairies, he's not making my job easy.

I mean, Sherlock Holmes was always pulp level writing. Actually, I always found it funny when it came to the BBC series, since all they did was modernize the existing books and thats it. Hell, least they bothered to come up with BS level explanations how he lived trough his death, Dagon knows Conan Doyle couldnt be arsed, though did wish the TV series had Moran make an apperance.

I know we just recently discussed this, but I'm trying to do some research into why people like Bob confuse scientists with wizards. it just makes me curious to why people like him mix them together.

Because to people who don't understand science (or how things work in general), scientific research really does seem like magic.

I can't wait for this Coronavirus to definitively show this fat tub of fuck that in his eugenics utopia, he would be amongst the first to go.
As much schadenfreude as I would feel if Cinema Robert contracted the Wu Flu, the odds are against it. He's gonna be sheltering in place (i.e., hiding out in his brother's basement) as much as possible.
Even if he didn't, the odds of him suffering significantly during the crisis are low. The American economy is robust, and state politicians are slowly and painfully learning that the private sector (mainly consisting of Bob's obsoletes) is better at responding to the crisis than the federal government, and are acting accordingly.
On the other hand, this crisis is bringing out content galore. This thread isn't going to die by Corona-Chan any time soon.

I'm going to mangle together what a bunch of people have said, but I think it's a mix of not knowing what science is and secular religion.

They don't see science as a process, but something like an episode of Star Trek where smart people spout long words and look at test tubes until gadgets fall out, or a resource where smart people + time + money = science points that can be traded for cures or smart phones. This explains why people like Bob are wondering why there's no cure for Wu flu yet, and why people with no knowledge of science write it like this.

Then there's secular religion, what Ayn Rand called "mystics of muscle". Broadly speaking, social justice has religious concepts like moral purity and original sin minus the super natural elements. "Science" is the Polyfilla that fills in the gaps. It grants miracles and is the vague tool by which the rewards will be handed to the devout.

If Bob were religious, he'd only do the bare minimum to guarantee his place in the after life and nothing more. But he's an atheist. His knowledge of science in general and computer and robotics in particular is basic to non-existent, but he knows that those are the means to get that eternal life (uploading his contentiousness into a robot body) and make his school bullies suffer (destroying their livelihoods with automation and hyper efficient farms).

So he basically took whichever Abrahamic religion's belief of 'eternal life' and had thought it more literal instead of as a sort of metaphor for the after-life?
