Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Thanks for that. Where I live we have lots of horses, lots of flys and more than a few honeybuckets on the back forty. I've started to see both them and the skeeters fire up and have been wary. I'll not stop being vigilant of course, but if the insects can stick to their usual vectors, I will be happy with that.
Just your usual hygiene measures will be fine. Cover food, Clean any bites immediately,,don’t leave stuff out, blah blah.

I use Flonase, which is a corticosteroid that can affect your immune system. Now imagine all the other drugs people are prescribed for minor and annoying conditions. I try to minimize my use of Flonase because I noticed it irritated my throat to the point I thought I had strep. Medications have side effects that aren't always discussed as do medical procedures. It's something to consider
Steroids are a tricky one. I think the advice at the moment is not to dose either stuff like pred or corticosteroids unless the patient is needing them already, but if they are, to continue. I’m also asthmatic and I know I should take the steroids but I dont like them. Tips for if you get a bad throat - get a proper vortex spacer and use it. They are pushing the powder inhalers these days to hit targets due to the propellants in the aerosol ones. But the powder hitting the throat, especially without a proper vortex, does irritate a lot of people. Insist on The vortex, and try other types of steroids if one is bothering you. Drink water and gargle after. I’m an idiot and only use them when I get bad, I just hate the fucking things. Don’t stop taking them if you need them without talking to your doctor.
Really not good optics. How many of the "they had no underlying conditions" young people turned out to HAVE underlying conditions that had never been tested for? Things like heart problems.
Something like ten percent of adults have a heart murmur. Mostly benign. Some not. You often dont realise with some conditions that anything is wrong until the system is under strain. That’s why healthy footballers drop dead in training, soldiers die doing marches with a mild virus, and why people who are young are dying of this. Probably a LOT of western young people have metabolic syndrome, are obese and have hypertension. Maybe there’s a genetic component to susceptibility too.

So what did Xi Jinping do, to warrant a pubalic fellatio by Mr. Sanchez? And what evil things have the EU and USA been doing... I mean, out of the ordinary...?

Nothing, the later half of his bullshit made it obvious Sanchez just thought if he played up that narrative he could pressure Merkel into giving him the fucking Marshall plan he's asked for multiple times already. Which is fucking retarded and dangerous, but does mean he hasn't sold us out yet. So it's not as bad as it could be. Yes I'm settling for "not as bad as it could be" this is spain that's the best we ever got.

His country is going to be broke af and he needs those loans from Xinnie.

"Is going to be" lol nigga we're already broke. Fuck, we've literally been broke since we lost the colonies. We only have periods where we're slightly less broke than usual.

But yeah that's the gist of it. He wants money and he's too stupid to do it right. Fucking idiot.

Quarantine is really driving people nuts in India.

As prison coronavirus cases rise, N.J. officers want 'hazard pay'

Oh, and their own testing facilities.

https://www.nj.com/coronavirus/2020...-hazard-pay-and-their-own-testing-center.html ( https://archive.md/2kcBJ )

This is gonna happen more. A lot of critical services like law enforcement, power, and medical will break down if employees refuse to work out of fear of personal safety.

The place could not be more prepared but no one is sick, the ER is just seeing normal Darwin-award activity and that's it. They have been doing tests on some people, the results come back negative or indicate the patient already had the virus and it went away.
You're in the US? Is there an antibody test actively being used to see if people have had the infection already?

I know that'd be really useful, but I didn't realise there was one out yet?

ETA:
To try to answer my own question, a quick google suggests they were at the lab experimental success stage 10 days ago.

China made one. It had 30% sensitivity, (as spain and checoslovaquia found out) so if they're using it that'd explain the issue.

Sweet mother o mercy.

Meanwhile I will chill here with my 3kg bag o pasta that I bought well before this panic shit began. Should be good for months on end.

Still no Shielding letter yet. Will talk to either my clinic at Specialist Outpatients or GPs on Monday. Friend of mine's had his sorted due to his severe Asthma. Could do with it as I chanced the shops this morning only to see masses still queuing around the car parks of both Morrisons and Sainsbury's. Wound up at the local instead. More expensive but at least I've covered the gaps in the basics.

Some footage of South Africa since total lockdown on March 26th.

There's video of that. Things are bad, if even the sight of soldiers carrying rifles can't persuade the people to stay in homes. Or they just can't grasp the concept of lockdown. If africans can't understand science of viruses, maybe authorities should just say that withcraft or some black magic happened there. Social distancing is unheard of, obviously.

Is this video for real? (I'll need someone to archive the tweet; it's incredibly backlogged again)

China snatched all the supplies from these countries when this started. Nothing noble here. Just a kid in day care acting like they didn't steal someone's Yu-gi-oh cards. Nice try, Lee. Now give the Exodia cards back to Jimmy.

Screenshot_20200328-125335.jpgHey guys, a small fragment of optimism ... apparently they are also reporting negative tests, so here are the ratios.

Not sure if they are doing random testing, or just testing folks who are symptomatic. Nevertheless it is like 1:7000 tests are positive so far. And among those positive many will recover.

Some places still have articles up and the comments are saying that the family said she was asthmatic. But asthma doesn't usually cause heart attacks and often doesn't even show up on Sp02. It's a restriction of the airway and as long as you're strong enough to keep breathing your lungs will pick up the oxygen. So unless it's an extreme allergic reaction to something an asthma attack would usually take a few hours to kill you and most adult deaths are due to idiots going to bed at the start of an attack and it gets worse while sleeping. Basically she probably had plenty of time to be driven to the ER even if the NHS wouldn't send an ambulance.

Women only have about 50% of the lung capacity of men and can't clear lactic acid as quickly (the DOMs after an attack is crazy) so it does take a lot less to kill them. Not something you'll ever hear the trans athletes mention. You'll find boys grow out of asthma after puberty whereas women get worse so the worst asthmatics are young boys and adult women.

..... And a note of pessimism ....

Information is patchy.

I wish that we wouldn't be using terms like CZAR. Sorry, just a bugaboo of mine. It is misleading and brings up divisive, shitty history. Sorry Europeans ... what they really mean is "expert occupying a leadership role."

Nevertheless, he might lend some insight into the general state of affairs.

This is terrible. The turnaround time for testing is several days because they have to outsource the lab work. And he claims that there is a 30% false negative rating.

1465 cases times 6898 equals 10,105,570.
It's not 1 of 7,000 tests positive, it's 1 confirmed infected per 6,898 people in the county.

Come on, are you serious? Did you watch the video and see the houses these people live in? Small one or two room shacks shared by whole families. Typically there's an old TV on a box in the corner and no air conditioning. Would you seriously spend an entire day sitting in your little shack with four other people, hot, bored, staring at your tin walls? You would not and nothing you post would convince me it's not bullshit if you say you would. Of COURSE these people go out. And social distancing? This isn't some spread out English or American town. It's South African shanty-towns. Every shop and home is pressed up against its neighbours like sardines. You cannot tell me with a straight face your behaviour would be any different if you lived in those circumstances. You just believe those circumstances could never apply to you.

There's going to be a shitload of deaths in South Africa.

Something is clearly up with this story. The family claimed COVID but the medics disagree. The Guardian wrote about it and then pulled the article which makes me think someone has made a legal threat to them.

As far as the differences between men and women it seems like there might be some signs that the patients who need ventilators are disproportionately male.

Just for that piece of fuckery I'm not linking to you.

The data arriving from Spain, combined with similar findings from other countries with large outbreaks, such as Italy, China and France, are increasingly suggesting that the top risk group for the novel coronavirus is not simply older adults, but older men. A Washington Post analysis of U.S. deaths so far also found that nearly 60 percent of deaths, in cases where a gender could be identified, were male.

The Spain data, based on an analysis of 20,648 cases so far and 722 deaths by the country’s Institute of Health Carlos III, a national public health agency, delivers a new level of detail. It shows that men are faring worse on multiple metrics for the disease.

Among gender-identified disease cases, men make up 60 percent of those that progress to the dangerous pneumonia stage. They make up 59 percent of the hospitalizations, 72 percent of the intensive care unit admissions and 65 percent of the deaths.

So in Spain, it's about 65:35 male to female. A significant discrepancy.
