Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Not open for further replies.
This is what bugs me most about a lot of these ultra-religious types, the megachurch, big bucks crowd specifically: they'll preach this and that and the other all day, but only from a church. The concept of "a church is not a building" is anathema to them. If you can't get everyone together, how will you hit them up for money? You can't do service through an internet stream, how will you get the money!‽?

Why does God need a starship middleman?
There's even apps for tithing. Tithe.ly, EasyTithe, Givelify and SecureGive. This is the most convenient time to do just about anything. You can order katanas off Amazon, 3D print food(Seriously), find reviews for everything from doctors to Mother 3 repro cartridges, and tithe through your phone.

This shows 95% of flights being canceled. A few on time. Mostly nothing going out or coming in.

Must be just a few rare flights. No idea who is on those planes. Must be purely on a need to know basis. Probably somewhat emergency status. Not necessarily air ambulance because that is not for regular passengers and not VIP because those are private flights but some other screening for basically a few people a flight for whatever reason.

Flights are leaving JFK on time and as scheduled.
Edit: Some flights are canceled/delayed because of the Nor'easter but weather related cancellations/delays are common.

Need to piggyback on this one. I just can't see the need for church or religion. All religions are man-made constructs intended to intersperse themselves between a person and God. They also try to force people to accept man-made limitations in their lives. I call bullshit. I don't believe that anyone died on a cross for my sins. The Bible has some nice proverbs, but to me reading tales of things that may or may not have happened in the Middle East is incredibly boring. Your mileage may vary.

Speaking of church, I get that the social aspect is important to some people. But I have never seen a church that wasn't a two-tier society. There are the priest's/minister's/imam's/rabbi's/whatever's "chosen few", and then you have everyone else, the "great unwashed". Last church I attended was the most blatant example of this I've ever seen. Enough to puke a dog off a gut wagon and drive a person away from church forever, except for weddings and funerals.

Ironic, because you and Jesus Christ would have agreed on a lot of things, since he spent most of his Messiah career ripping apart the then current religious power structure. The Pharisees believed that you could buy your way into Heaven by being holier than thou, while Jesus refused to let a crowd of them stone an adulterous woman to death. (Y'know, because, maybe people who screw up shouldn't get only one chance to lead a decent life or death. Radical idea, I know.) Christian ideology and philosophy has had its uses - there wouldn't be a college system without the founding of schools, universities and hospitals in the Middle Ages. Catholic mathematicians and philosophers did much to found modern science. The idea of universal equality (that wealth has nothing to do with how good a person you are - its what you do with what you have that defines you) has its roots in Christian thinking. I'd much rather live in a country that has, at least, a culturally Christian background (or one that was greatly influenced by such a country, like Japan,) than live in a bughole like China where "screw the other guy before he screws you" seems to be the dominant philosophy.

Robinsons' supermarket is now offering frozen Chickenjoy from Jollibee (the only fast food that McDonalds has no chance of beating) for the duration of the quarantine.

Personally I believe you. But at this stage in the game, what is most relevant to our collective process of moving forward, is focusing on who it KILLS, who it DOES NOT KILL, and who it sort of kills.

And with that, how can we balance the need to keep countries economically stable and the workforce alive and healthy, and the need to quarantine?

If the condition interferes with the involuntary breathing reflexes in some, that is a nice tidbit of information, but for now, just count them among the dead.

I found a vid about the Vagus Nerve (the 10th cranial nerve pair):

LOL, we literally Deus Ex, now.

Basically, the pathway for the virus into the brain looks something like Lung Tissue > Parasympathetic Nerves of the Lungs > Vagus Nerve (CN X) > Botzinger Complex.

The Bötzinger Complex has projections to

Only augmenting expiratory neurons of BötC, which are exclusively glycinergic, project to the phrenic nucleus.[21][14]

Projections to the Bötzinger complex include the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS)[22][23] the DRG and the VRG.[24]

There are papers to support this conclusion:

The neuroinvasive potential of SARS‐CoV2 may play a role in the respiratory failure of COVID‐19 patients (2020-02-24) [https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/jmv.25728]

In other words, the virus climbs the nerves of the lungs, then the nerves of the neck, and then right into the cardiorespiratory center of the brain stem. This happens to basically all of the critical patients. They suffer dysautonomia.

The autonomic nervous system controls all the parts of the body that you don't have any conscious control over, like breathing in your sleep, dilation of your pupils, peristalsis of the intestines, heartbeat, sexual arousal, et cetera. Because the virus is a neurotropic respiratory virus, it gets into the nerves that control the lungs and from there, it rises all the way into the part of the motherfucking medulla oblongata that controls your lungs.

Do people understand why this is so hard to diagnose? It's because these people already have breathing trouble from pneumonia. The neurological damage is masked by the direct cardiopulmonary damage.

With someone who is already having shortness of breath and pneumonia with obvious lung parenchymal damage, hardly anyone would suspect that the fucking cranial nerves and brain stem are contributing to their breathing troubles.

But it happens in transgenic hACE2 mice when they shoot SARS virus up their nose like fucking Flonase.

As the low-dose intracranially inoculated animals exhibited limited viral antigen distribution but still rapidly succumbed to infection, we reasoned that neurons in a vital region of the brain would be infected. Examination of brain sections from mice inoculated with 3.2 or 320 PFU of SARS-CoV revealed that the dorsal vagal complex (nucleus tractus solitarii, area postrema, and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus), critical for cardiorespiratory function, was infected in all four samples examined (Fig. (Fig.3H).3H). We also examined brains from mice inoculated intracranially (Fig. (Fig.3I)3I) or intranasally (Fig. (Fig.3J)3J) with high doses of virus and observed that the dorsal vagal complex was infected in all instances. Thus, the fulminant disease occurring in SARS-CoV-infected K18-hACE2 mice may result from infection and functional impairment of this critical brain region.

What this paper essentially says is that the virus gets into the mouse's medulla, homes in on the cardiorespiratory center, and causes aspiration pneumonia due to shallow breathing. The shallow breathing is, itself, caused by the nerves of the lungs being cut off from the brain by the virus directly damaging them.

Because this is a neurotropic virus.

I don't know how many times I have to say it before it sinks in. I've been shouting it from the rooftops basically fucking everywhere. Nobody wants to believe it.

Neurons have ACE2 receptors. This virus is more than capable of entering nerve cells and using them to replicate, as well as migrating through the nerves and into the brain.

More and more information on the neurological manifestations of this virus keeps coming out:

"There are some recent data suggesting that COVID-19 virus also reaches the central nervous system. Neurological symptoms in patients with COVID-19 infection fall into three categories: neurological expressions of the symptoms of the underlying disease (headache, dizziness, disturbances of the state of consciousness, ataxia, epileptic manifestations and stroke;) symptoms of neuro-peripheral origin (hypo-ageusia, hyposmia, neuralgia;) symptoms of skeletal muscle damage, often associated with liver and kidney damage."

Chinese scientists in Wuhan, led by Bo Hu, MD, PhD, reported data from 214 patients at three COVID-19-designated care hospitals of the Union Hospital, part of the Tongji Medical College at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. They reported that 78 of the 214 patients had neurologic manifestations. The more severe patients were likely to have neurologic symptoms, such as acute cerebrovascular diseases; impaired consciousness. and skeletal muscle injury.

For the love of god, stay indoors. Go full NEET if you have to. Just don't go out. Just stay the fuck home.

The economy doesn't matter. Wagecucking is bullshit anyway. Just don't get this goddamn virus.

I believe you that this virus can cause long term damage. But the data is not in on any of this stuff.

Well, the data on chronic illness isn't in for COVID-19, yet. However, the syndrome that it causes is very, very similar to SARS, and we have lots of data on what SARS did to survivors.

To put it bluntly, it royally fucked them right the fuck up. They had lung scarring, chronic fatigue, mental issues, chronic pain, and osteonecrotic joint damage from being dosed with methylpred.

COVID-19 is similar enough to SARS that I am about 85% confident that this thing is going to leave behind shitloads of cripples and vegetables if we don't fucking do something about it right the fuck now.

Permanent. Functional. Impairment.

Aww look, it's babby's first flu!

You do realize everything you described are also complications of influenza, right? That it's called SARS Corona Virus 2 or 2019 n(ovel)CoV2 because it's like...SARS! Maybe it's enough like SARS because it is. Nothing you have posted is new or even noteworthy at this point.

The economy doesn't matter. Wagecucking is bullshit anyway. Just don't get this goddamn virus.

You are genuinely a fucking idiot. Stop looking at shit. There's people out there smarter than you that aren't concerned.

This isn't some new thing. People can get terrible complications from mostly everything. This isn't going to have more complications than not - look at Glandular Fever. That has pretty awful complications and you know what? They spread it. That shit stays in your system.
This is no different. You're actually advising that the economy doesn't matter? Get a grip on yourself, you halfwit.
Who do you think pays for shit? Like medical? The economy. No economy means no medical shit. No medical shit means simple things will kill you. Oh, you're worried about complications from WuFlu? Well, you're going to be in for a fucking shock when the economy doesn't exist and they can't fund basic treatment for things we take for granted.
Have you ever even been to a 3rd world country? Known anyone from one?

People die all the time in the 3rd world - normal people - from shit that's preventable in the 1st world that we don't even give a second look to. Why? Because they don't have the means to take care of their people. It's not because they're some kind of different animal. It's because they simply don't have the money to train people, invest in the system, buy supplies, have clean water, have food.

I cannot believe I am going to say this - but stop being a 1st world cry baby, stop doom posting, get a fucking hold of yourself, you're not a genius or a medical doctor. It's fucking Corona Virus. It's idiots like you that are making this situation a million times worse.

If, on the off chance it was THIS bad (it's not), then we're fucked anyway. Most people would rather go out working, than hiding away in a fucking bunker. You know why? Coz when you emerge from your NEET cocoon, nothing will be out there. No money, no ability to survive. If you're carrying on like this over THIS virus, then you're not equipped to be able to survive whatever doomsday scenario you've built in your head.

I know airline tickets are still being sold online but people are stopped at the airport and told to turn around.

Why would airlines be flying with skeleton crews? Why would they be wasting fuel? Maybe people are somehow getting special permission to get on planes with like "a note from my doctor I was tested and am well and have an emergency."

Still, where I am no one has seen a plane in the sky for a week and a half. Not even a prop. Not even a Cessna. Except for daily occasional jet flybys low level and they reroute back over their tail track a few times in a row going in circles as though a war is going on and they are doing reconnaissance or dropping a payload or some shit.

That is the weirdest shit ever. Alaska, American, Southwest. All passenger flights. Nothing commercial. Wtf
Passenger flights carry cargo, especially regular mail from USPS, etc. Ecommerce is booming so companies are paying extra to keep them flying even without passengers.

The economy IS important. Human health is the most important thing but a lot of negative effects on human health will happen if the economy ranks past a point. Lockdown is not trivial.
consider: an elderly man, with risk factors. Lives alone. Gets regular daily visits from their kids and grandkids. The risk of them visiting is disease transmission but the risks of visits being stopped are huge as well. What if he falls and can’t get up? Or snaps a femur? Or has no food in? Or is ill and nobody is there to help? What effect does isolation have on him? Depression? The neglected elderly die, that’s the bottom line.
People need money and jobs to survive. We can lock down to a point, but tanking to economy past a certain level will result in long term death and hardship increases.
Look at how sweden is handling this - schools where kids are old enough to be home and look after themselves are shut. Daycares and juniors open. Shops open. Everyone is working from home if they can and distancing. A lot of people have lost jobs but hopefully it will be at a recession level, not a depression or collapse level.
I predict that countries with a lower population density and a populace sensible enough will follow sweden. Places where there are mega cities and no rule of law are fucked, but it’ll burn through fast. I think the places that will be worst hit Long term will be those that try to lock down a bit, in high density population areas. They’re going to get hit every time they relax and have their economies tank.
There needs to be a balance.

Sorry if someone already mentionned that article here or in another thread but I saw this article via a topic on City-Data forums who mentionned the lost of 21 million cell phone users who could be a clue to an higher death rate in China thanks to corona-chan.

Honestly can't tell if your post is useful information or a gish gallop.

Let me simplify it, then. Virus go in lung. Virus go up wire from lung to brain. Virus go in lizard brain. Lizard brain fall down go boom.

Of course they are. Certain strains of influenza are neurotropic as well. The difference is not in kind, but in quantity and extent. Bat SARS is more invasive in various tissues than influenza, and causes more severe damage. We need to be very, very cautious with this thing.

You are genuinely a fucking idiot. Stop looking at shit. There's people out there smarter than you that aren't concerned.

If you're carrying on like this over THIS virus, then you're not equipped to be able to survive whatever doomsday scenario you've built in your head.

You think I don't know that?

I knew, as far back as mid-February, that at least fifty thousand people in Wuhan had died. I knew that the CIA and the DOD knew. I knew that Congress has been briefed on this in secret meetings, as well as being told that our pandemic preparedness was at an all-time low. I surmised all of these things a month and a half ago.

I knew why they were keeping everything under wraps. They had to protect the market. It was just that simple. Without the markets, any organized pandemic response would have to operate on a militarized system. A command economy, in other words. This would be less efficient than marshaling civilian commercial resources to produce and distribute the necessary pharmaceuticals and equipment. More lives would be lost if the economy was paralyzed. I know all of this. I am not stupid.

What I mean by "the economy does not matter" is that we don't actually have a choice in this. This thing is airborne in aerosols, it is extremely virulent, and it spreads much, much too quickly. China had to shut all their factories down because the workers kept getting sick from being in close proximity with each other. If they send people back to work, guess what? The cycle begins all over again. In about one to three weeks from the resumption of work, we will start to see more and more cases among the factory workers until they're forced into lockdown again. This cycle will repeat itself until everyone has gotten sick from it and either acquired some level of immunity or died.

Look at what happened. They tried to protect the markets with information control, and the markets crashed and we went into a global recession anyway. The flow of goods from China slowed to a tiny trickle. Our shippers, longshoremen, truckers, warehouses, and e-commerce companies have all noticed the lack of goods. It is impossible to conceal logistical disruption on this scale.

The reason why I was so desperate to contact officials back in February was because I realized we had a very short time limit to turn our production lines around and have them produce PPE and supplies before our own factory workers and healthcare professionals would start getting sick, too. You might say, oh, they had confidential information that I did not, and they had experts and consultants with far more information than I do. However, if that were the case, then why were they so slow? Why did they not cut through the red tape and act sooner?

Now, it is too late. In two to four weeks, we will see major quarantines, likely including the suspension of the Posse Comitatus Act and the usage of Federal military force in domestic roles. The only way to forestall this is if people practice extensive social distancing. Even more than they are at the moment.

The CDC has completely dropped the ball. Now, it falls on FEMA, the DOD, and USACE to pick up the pieces.

This is the current statistic right now in South Korea (where most tests are done per capita)

Anyone over 70: 11%+ Chance of death

Anyone over 60: 5%+ chance of death

Anyone over 50: 3-4% chance of death

Everyone below 50: 0.1% chance of death

Just remember that yeah, you may get a corona, but around your parents and grandparents, remember never to touch any shit because there is a high chance they will die. Or have them stay in their room for 5 month and avoid this as much as possible.

Given the impact of the WuFlu on the chinese economy, I would suggest that many people canceled their subsciption, cause they don't have the money for it at the moment.
Also, without absolutely all cellphone services in China being evaluated, chances are that many people just switched to a service that's not part of the scope of this analysis.
The next issue is: How many of these cellphone subscriptions belong to how many people? Ie: If there is people who own 4 subscriptions (for whatever reason) and now only use one for all the utilities that they need, that doesn't mean the difference in subs is causes by casualties, obviously.

Yeah, the drop is pretty significant and I wouldn't be surprised if actual corona casualties figure into it, but to assume, that these numbers translate 1:1 to dead people, is silly.

Well, we are living in the dystopian globohomo society, where trannies are celebrated and not drowned in the bogs as they ought to. People, who are responsible and most capable for supporting this abhorrent regime are mostly older - who seem to die in greater numbers to this airborne Chinkaids - I'd rather see all the quarantines cancelled, so I could re-emerge from my own happening bunker after 2 months time to the herd-immune society with less boomers. I am sorry, I'd rather see millions of you dead for a small chance of the future where trannies can not groom children to cutting their dicks off, than support quarantines and simp for grandma.

We actually need boomers, to be honest. Most of our best doctors are in an older age group, like their fifties or sixties. It takes a very long time to accrue experience in that field. Can you imagine the brain drain if we lost all these highly experienced near-retirees? We'd be in deep shit.

Seriously. I understand there's a strong community aspect to church, but it's not like you need a church to worship God. You can still pray on your own in your home, and like I said a lot of churches are offering streaming of services. This is all just a temporary measure, it's not like you can never go to church again.

I can't help but feel like some people just want to go to church so they can show off how pious they are. Praying publicly is the not the only- or even the best- way to pray. If only Jesus said something about tha- oh wait.
I always quote from the KJV simply because it's contributed so much to the English language.
