People still blame Bush for the response to katrina, so dont count on anyone jumping from the DRUMPF train anytime soon.
Changing phone numbers in china is much more difficult. In china, your phone number is basically your SS number, and mobile interaction is a vast majority of transactions. Switching to a different number used to be damn near impossible, its easier now but still no cakewalk.
The 21 million includes the major networks. All other networks are MVNO, and losses from these networks are included in the 21 million. So there are 21 million fewer total phone numbers active in china at the moment.
I believe there are 2 major possibilities:
1. People are cancelling service because the whole economy has stalled. There is no money, and China isnt giving them NEETbux. When it comes to personal income, China is hyper-capitalist, like gilded age america, so if you dont work you have no money, unless you can afford to retire. Most young people probably have run out of cash and are putting their subscriptions on hold.
2. There really are tens of millions dead. China has 1.4 billion people, and the chinese government didnt react to the spread of corona for over a month. Their healthcare system was already in shambles, medication and PPE were impossible to get in large quantities, and anyone remotely showing symptoms was thrown into plague vats disguised as hospitals. If every single person in China was sickened, 21 mil would be a 1.5% death rate. It is reasonable to assume that, due to rampant smoking culture, atrocious air quality, rampant pollution, and lack of nutrition for the vast majority of china, as well as a culture that insanely prioritizes saving face, that the death rate was probably much higher, at 3% only 50% of china would have to be infected to hit that number.
