Our neighbour Sweden has fucked up tho. They had about 60 deaths in one day. Apparently they are finally starting to put some restrictions on.

Someone a while back mentioned a bat tick on a researcher. Other escape routes: broken drains, poor air flow, poor disposal of carcasses, poor disposal of lab waste, needlestick injuries, blood splashes, etc.
There’s plenty of evidence archived earlier that these labs were a source of concern re: adherence to safety protocols. Even well run western labs have had leaks.

Update on Poland, it just gets worse edition. Confirmed cases: 2420 (+243), deaths 43 (+10).
From today, deceased people who had symptoms but we're not tested will be included in the official count, which will likely make the number of casualties higher.
But we'll probably see less confirmed cases tomorrow, as hospitals are running out of the testing kits.
Also, another nice hot spot - a hospital with 115 cases since the beginning with a third of the staff on quarantine now, and a plane came with tests and other aid, but since it was from China it will probably be shit.

I'm not a virologist, doctor, epidemiologist or diesel mechanic, so could you explain it like I'm a Journalist (to use EmuWarsVet's excellent Spanish phrase) . What is Gain of function, is it as scary as it sounds, and would Wuhan likely have been dicking around with this.

First of all, there are plenty of indications that "sheltering in place" IS effective. This is in the news. I'll let you guys look it up if curious. So the result of the "panic" is making metroplexes like LA and the Bay Area "less" of the petri dishes that they already are.

The United States might be "hard hit" but we won't know for a while, just how "hard hit" it is/was, and in what respect.

First off, the United States boasts a population of 327.2 million, according to 2018 census.

So per capita, what is the coof rate?

Economically we might be "hard hit" I suppose you will ultimately know by comparing our GDP per capita (maybe I am not using the right term) before the pandemic, and after. And compare it to places like UK, Italy, China, India ... the difference between "then and now" for team Yank can be compared to Hindustan, Spain whatever you want.

Data is not in yet. But I am skeptical that the American family, at least, has it harder than anybody else, right now.

The possibility was raised early in the thread and that paper is archived here somewhere too.
The media is doubling down on pooh-poohing any suggestion that this was ‘ a bio weapon’ or ‘made in a lab’ but I think that just ignores or misrepresents what may have have happened. My own thoughts, from the start were that this is not ‘constructed.’ Nobody has sat down and designed this and built it. BUT... it’s very possibly a virus that has been collected in the wild and studied in the lab, and somebody has fucked up. That has happened in western labs (second recent foot and mouth outbreak was an escape from Pirbright labs.) SARS has escaped a lab environment a few times in China as well.

Fact-checking the claim that 'It's a bioweapon' and saying 'there's no evidence of that' is a typical piece of sleight of hand for partisan US reasons.

The claim could be written like this

'1) There is some evidence that the virus escaped a lab
2) That lab was a Chinese BSL-4 lab designed to replicate the US's USAMRIID and CDC labs to make bioweapons'

Now, most people think that China wanting their own copy of USAMRIID and CDC is at the very least suspicious. The US doesn't regard biological weapons as militarily useful but who knows what the CCP thinks given they believe in Assasin's Mace (Archive) weapons but we can't at this stage say we know that for sure.

However, that's not the gravamen of the claim which is that it might have leaked from one of these labs. As you say, we know SARS leaked from a Chinese lab in Beijing. There's evidence that COVID escaped a lab and in fact, the deleted Chinese paper claims just that.

It reminds me of a parody of fact-checking which had a picture of a long, Pinocchio nose and the text 'FALSE: The terrorist drove a Mazda'. The implication being that the terror attack being fact-checked had taken place but because a few people got the make of car driven wrong it was false.

Especially as elderly people are well known for being able to cope with a sudden change in the rules like 'you can't leave your house anymore and no one can visit you'. There's no way that they might ignore the rule, go out and get infected anyway, quietly starve to death, keel over because they can't get their meds or never go back to going out even when the lockdown is lifted and go into an irreversible decline.

Don't take it as an attack: personally I find your point of view interesting. But you seem to lack a sense of the demographics and cultural geography of this place.

There's a lot of money flowing into new test purchases both from local authorities and private businesses, so I'm not sure what's with the hold-up. I'm watching the numbers, so far the percentage of positive tests does not go past 5.5% of daily total on worst days, so we have some margin of safety here. The minister promised a testing capacity of 6000+ a day, hopefully soon. The Czech Republic is already doing 6k daily.
