They're all classics! And yes, Disney did give Asterix the time of day once 30+ years ago.

They might've, though it's been years since I last watch them that way. That promo is ingrained in my head though, constantly on every tape in those early years!

I remember the song bits but forgot just how long that promo went on for. I thought it was a minute, tops.

They really wanted you (or your parents) to buy these tapes quickly, at least what was available then.

Only kids with rich parents had those early Walt Disney Home Video tapes since this was before VHS tapes were priced-to-own, often being more expensive than owning movies on Laserdisc (which was already around in the 1980s though many of them were still branded as "Discovision" if I remember correctly). I think it'd be a few more years before Top Gun ushered in the priced-to-own revolution in 1987 (yeah, it was 1986 movie but this was back when home video releases regularly didn't happen until at least a year after the theatrical release).

While true, my mom did have two VCR's as early as '82 and was renting these tapes to copy anyway, but yeah, this was a very different time when VCR's and cable TV were luxuries for most people yet I was lucky to have them growing up.

It was the best image I could find in a Google search, but thanks for noticing! Recall Just For Kids altering Asterix vs. Caesar to remove the French theme song at the open and end of the film (though they left the tune alone in Asterix in Britain because it was in English anyway).

Disney tapes in particular were even more expensive in order to make rent to view the only viable option, after that Disney decided to reduce the price of their tapes but only released them in very limited runs, I assume most people who got those older tapes got them after Disney gave up on their rent to view method and rental stores sold them on for newer stock.

Additionally, I think some movies on VHS were priced-to-own before Top Gun but they were usually re-releases after the movies were already on pay TV which usually wasn't until at least 6 months after the films were at video stores, so there was a certain window for "priced-to-rent".

The big deal about Top Gun on VHS was that, if I remember correctly, it was the first major Hollywood blockbuster to be priced-to-own the same day as it hit video stores, though I was 12 at the time it came out on VHS and might be forgetting a major release or two beforehand. I remember Back to the Future and Beverly Hills Cop (and possibly a third film though I don't remember which one) were the first pre-recorded movies my parents bought on VHS around the same time as Top Gun's VHS release but I think those were the priced-to-own re-releases after the priced-to-rent copies had been out a year or so.

Yep, though FHE is a separate company from "Just for Kids" (which was owned by Celebrity Entertainment, FHE ended up in the Lionsgate family).

It is odd one was never made for Groo at all. I wonder if Mark Evanier or Sergio Aragones had gotten such deals and/or turned them down?

Yeah glancing at google only shows a couple of test concepts by randos with no apparent authorization.
It is kinda weird that the IP would go unexploited so long, especially with Usagi Yojimbo making sporadic appearances in stuff.
