I get it, they are needed for medical personnel, but as happened in China, places like Laredo TX are banning people from going outside without masks. If you can't by a mask from the only avaiable seller, it becomes a de facto 100% curfew.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but just because the ChiComs were lying and fudging their numbers doesn't make them untrue. The ChiComs very well could have told a lie and stumbled ass-backwards into the truth.

My model of China is that you have a Commie government that tries to cover up things it finds politically inconvenient, kind of like the Soviet government covered up Chernobyl. And you've got some good scientists doing science, probably earning a pittance and being menaced by CCP goons for not being sufficiently on message. And you've got some less principled scientists pumping out politically convenient bullshit and being richly rewarded. Sometimes the government will look a scientific paper or even a scientist and decide they're inconvenient and disappear them. However, the government isn't a godlike, perfect entity. Sometimes papers get published which are inconvenient because the system isn't perfect and it didn't spot them. And in this case, a bunch of good scientists might have done the science, come up with an answer which looks like CCP bullshit but is actually true.

It's not a pure system which always lies, just like Western science isn't a pure system which always tells the truth so you can't just assume because a Chinese scientist said something, the reverse is true. (Archive)

Friend that works in a north Florida hospital got told today that 1) face masks are mandatory and 2) they're required to re-wear them for multiple days. The employee memo said that the masks will be replaced if they are damaged, and that they'll be tracking who asks for replacements. They are trying to find out if they're allowed to bring a home made mask, but judging how other US hospitals have disciplined/fired staff for this, it seems unlikely. At this point they are just waiting to get sick. Infection control is a joke.

This thing is airbourne. We knew it was. Why do you think the Chinese were Buying up masks like no tomorrow? You add that to a crowded city where people are packed into small apartments, often older buildings that share ventilation and boom, west coast has the population but it’s different housing - lower rise, less shared air.

I hope to fuck it's spreading in droplets which means if you stay 2m apart you're OK and not just as viral particles floating in the air. Because if it's the latter it's going to be a lot worse.

Then again the fact it can survive on surfaces for days does rather imply that it's the latter. In which case, everyone in the vibrant and diverse bug hives that are major cities is going to get it regardless of how much they social distance, wear gloves and masks outside and wipe down their shopping with a disinfectant. Not that you can buy gloves, masks or disinfectants anymore.

From what I hear... Stockholm is a bit of a mess. The regional government have slashed health there and are paying for it now. The tunnelbana is a big source of infection, and there are clusters of infection in ethnic communities in particular. Gothenburg and Malmö also getting hammered. The rest of sweden isn’t doing too badly and outside the big cities Tegnell’s herd immunity plan will probably work. The virus is now in a huge percentage of elderly care homes - at least a third of Stockholm old age care homes have it and my girl on the ground says it’s much higher than that http://archive.is/VaFAB
Daycares and schools under a certain age remain open, very little testing being done and my source says everyone she knows is coughing.
I think there will again be a big divide city v country. It’s almost the Easter break in Sweden and they are trying to stop people leaving Stockholm to go skiing. Most of the ski hills have closed just last week.

How the hell is New York getting hit so hard? I figured it’d be the west coast that would be getting decimated by this.

Because when shit started to hit the fan, Gavin Newsom surprised every single person in the country by speed-dialing the White House and asking for their advice on how to handle the outbreak. He was one of the first governors to do that, and as a result of following their advice and the facilitation of federal help, the infection rate in California nearly flatlined. Newsom had the good sense to shut the fuck up and just do his job instead of playing politics, and it worked.



He pulled in every single state asset that he could find, he started recruiting retired civilian and military medical personnel, he took in anyone who was able to volunteer for non-medical duties so that the medical staff could get freed up, and he went nuts on finding locations for military 'field hospitals.'

New York, on the other hand, just danced around like brain-dead idiots and kept encouraging people to go out and party in Chinatown (And I mean that they literally did that) and took every opportunity to ignore every piece of advice that the Federal government was offering them until their infection rate just exploded.

For once, California actually didn't fuck something up. I was shocked because I would have bet my last dollar that California was going to be the Ground Zero for this outbreak in the U.S., but something managed to scare the shit out of Newsom and he got to work.

They repeat the usual bullshit about how only medical workers need a mask initially but as you read the article it's clear it's not that simple. If everyone wore a mask the infection rate might well slow. Of course, the media went all-in on 'Masks don't work! You don't need one!
