Yeah, that's the only plausible explanation I could think of too. It seems very heavy handed and annoying though. Does the risk-reward calculation really say ban people for going for a drive, or country walk, yet the streets near me are busier than usual with people taking a constitutional walk, or kids on bikes. All social distancing fairly well, but if this is airbourne, they're infecting each other.
There's something about how this lockdown is going down that is making me twitchy. The non-paranoid explanation is that it is a chaotic developing situation, and individuals and groups are making mistakes as they work things out. The paranoid in me thinks that something else is going on, though I've no idea what. That helicopter was back again tonight, doing a slow scan .

The Act contains a lot of provisions , always worrying when legislation is rushed through, and this is extremely rushed compared to normal timescales. I haven't had time to read through it all (so, probably like all the MPs how voted on it) . I'm worried that "Total Fascistic Domination" is hidden in the small print. E.g. They have added powers for forcibly removing suspected infectious persons.

(a)direct the person to go immediately to a place specified in the direction which is suitable for screening and assessment,

Unfortunately a lot of police have been deployed to beauty spots and tourist towns because that's where people shot off to the minute all the pubs shut. Snowdonia ate up resources like a bastard as everyone went for a wander up the mountain. Many places around Pillockshire saw the police in weird, weird spots en masse rather than in the towns and cities (there's hardly any presence in Pillockville most days, but we're a sensible sort who've been deprived of police before).

If someone with more time / legal training / autism could look at the text of the act see what we're in for that'd be great. I might see if I can find any legal blogs that have looked at this.

The act is to be in effect for two years so the government doesn't have to keep going back to parliament to extend constantly. Instead, the MPs managed to shove in and heavily vote for an amendment meaning they'll look at it again in 3 months time. The reason war-like rhetoric has begun to creep in is just that. This is a war against a virus and nobody's entirely sure when we'll beat it. The hope is within 3-6 months, but what happens if the govt finds it needs 7 months? or 9? It's better to have the powers for "too long" so they don't have to constantly risk everyone by going back time and time again.

That being said, this is a Tory Govt that's more in favour of individual rights than we've seen in a very long time, especially after all the europhiles were purged and a lot of t'norf went blue.

There's been a few articles out there about how ministers had to mentally prep themselves for these powers and you can see quite a few of them hate it. Hancock seems to dislike the measures being taken non-stop (despite his excellent handling of the rabble of the press yesterday) and BoJo's long been a proponent of letting you bugger off and carry on with your life.

I really cannot see them wanting to hold onto such a ghastly law for longer then needs be.

What's funny too is that if you broke it down to just purely voters rather than counties the difference would likely be even higher. Corona spreads like wildfire in urban areas because it's for one, an airborne virus and thus spreads better the closer people are to each other, and two can live on surfaces for days according to some studies, which means things like elevator buttons are ideal homes for the virus. You also have to consider the fact that most of the big cities have high homeless populations, and hobos aren't known for things like washing their hands regularly which turns them into super spreaders.

Yesterday morocco just tried to push through cadiz the biggest fucking drug raid in history. Probably due to how much their gangs over here have gone to hell since quarantine started and the army started patroling. The cops caught most of it soon after. Judging by the sheer size Morocco's economy must've been gone to hell and so far all that's happened is they can't export drugs anymore, once corona starts raping them (which I know ain't happening yet because Ceuta and Melilla are right beside morocco and due to EU legislation their border has suffered significantly so if morocco was getting fucked we'd see the migrant waves.) I honestly think morocco as a country will die, it's gonna get cut to pieces by terrorists and gangs. So far only thing keeping their monarchy afloat was the french bucks, I doubt france will be keeping them fed anymore.

It seems we have a really large amount of contagion today. It's just high in daily number though, weekly number still seems lower than past week so it's not that worrying. Still, can't overlook that shit.

Also, spain is going full nationalist at the root level. The EU seems to have finally done something to help, don't know what they only say they're helping economically. Very european of them. But as always it's too little too late. Spain's already on the mindset that it's alone and the EU can't be trusted for shit ever. The national business promotion initiatives are being rolled in full force, we're going into tradewar and we're not stopping anymore, our government sure as shit can't be trusted to help us we won't let them stop us. Rest of europe better join in on the war effort because so long as it means destroying china and generating jobs we're quite happy to cooperate with everyone, but we ain't stopping to wait for them, if they don't join they might get hurt for real, we won't let collateral stop us, either you're pushing or you're in the way, the train's been set in motion and spain doesn't understand the concept of brakes.

All the articles i see are bashing herd immunity, but i dont see any other way cases go down.

Herd immunity would easily overwhelm the healthcare system. If everyone gets the virus all at once, then the likelihood of a very large death toll is really high. Not necessarily because of the virus itself, but because far less people would be able to receive the proper treatment, as the hospitals would be severely overcrowded. We also need to take into consideration of all of the other medical emergencies that people still go through, like heart attacks, strokes, accidents, etc. Herd immunity would lead to a lot of COVID-19-related deaths along with collateral damage full of sick people with non-COVID-19-related problems. With herd immunity, we're talking about the likelihood of a devastating amount of deaths around the globe-- we're talking in the tens of millions, easily.

If you slow down the spread of the virus, though, then that gives the hospitals more capability to treat more people if they're coming down with the virus one at a time instead of all at once. More patients would receive the treatment they needed, thus lowering the death toll considerably.

That said, the whole concept of nationwide lockdowns and mandated quarantines aren't the greatest method either. You need some people to catch the virus to start building an immunity. If everyone succumbed to the fully draconian measures ... Well, firstly, it wouldn't work because you just can't keep everybody fully isolated and protected (especially in densely populated areas like New York City), and secondly, the draconian measures wouldn't allow enough of the population to develop an immunity or antibodies (so a proper vaccine would be really difficult to make in a timely fashion at that point). Every time a mandated quarantine would be over, the outbreaks would have many more phases and many more spikes in cases, and so we'd be getting back to square one multiple times, I think. Just like herd immunity, draconian measures aren't the answer either, in my opinion.

Promoting and encouraging self-quarantine and social distancing for those who can stay home, though? Promoting self-quarantine for those most vulnerable? Yes, I think that this is the best, least devastating solution. It slows down the progression of the virus considerably while also allowing a good chunk of the (hopefully low risk) people to be exposed to it, thus eventually creating antibodies and then a vaccine in a timely fashion. This is not only the least deadly option, but also probably the fastest, as it actually gives doctors the time and resources to develop a vaccine in the quickest amount of time possible. EDIT: Not to mention that this method results in more people with antibodies compared to enforced lockdowns, thus allowing the doctors to provide the vaccine to those who need it much more easily, without worrying as much about the supply for the immediate demand.

The Washington Post published an article that explained things pretty well, I think. It came out almost a month ago (and I know I've posted it here already, but why not share the link again since the last time I posted it was several hundred pages ago).

I've heard that there was a concerted effort on social media to convince black people that they are immune to the virus. This video is weeks old. It also gives viewers a false impression of what's happening in Mexico, by showing only one place in only one city, the capital, as if nobody was really concerned, however, many other places in the city that are usually bustling are now deserted, and other streets just don't have as much activity as they used to, which has a negative impact on small businesses, of which there are too many (which is one of the reasons why the president encouraged people to go out and support those businesses early on, instead of enforcing a quarantine immediately: he had to choose between letting millions of informal workers starve to death and scare the entire population into panic buying, or allow those workers to keep their source of income until a full lockdown is the only option). And that's not to mention the stricter measures that some states (generally, the ones with the most cases and deaths) have been taking, and people's reactions in the rest of the country.
Of course, as in any other country, there are people that still don't take it seriously or even believe it's all a hoax, but that's plain old ignorance, not on the goverment, since they've been promoting proper preventive measures for quite a while. Also, a lot has changed since that video was uploaded. Most importantly, measures are being taken, vulnerable citizens are (supposedly) being supported financially, and a plan has been put into action since January.
