Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I appreciate that my area is basically ignoring the stay at home orders, rather than running and hiding like rats because TV Man said so. I imagine the quarantines will be forcibly lifted by May, though. Even if they try to force it to extend to June, no one's going to listen. Between "stuck inside forever without any money or work" and "maybe I get sick", people will overwhelmingly pick the latter no matter how many scare tactics the media tries to throw at them. It's just human nature to adapt 'oo so scary' into 'life goes on' over time.

Depending on the population density and current state of the healthcare system on your area that'd be either a hard agree or a "you're all crazy!" From me. If you're in texas or other rural states, hard agreem if you're in NY or other megacities "oh the humanity."

Tokyo confirms record 143 new coronavirus infections

This brought the total number of pneumonia-causing virus infections confirmed in the Japanese capital to 1,034, a development that could step up calls for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to declare a state of emergency.

26,000 quarantined after 10 feast attendees contract coronavirus in Madhya Pradesh

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) RS Bakna said that the man, who worked as a waiter at a hotel in Dubai, returned to Morena from Dubai on March 17 after getting information about his mother's death. "He organised a customary feast on March 20 to mark the 13th day of mourning after his mothers death," he said.

It's not a megacity. I don't think there's a single confirmed case anywhere nearby, but there's a statewide lockdown anyway because of the megacity issues.

Mum called me "you have a shot scar on your left arm right? Good." Needles to say I was confused. Apparently an old tuberculosis vaccine is somehow helping against coronavirus, seemingly helping the immune system fight non TB respiratory illnesses. The vaccine was mandatory across the USSR and still is across the former Soviet countries. Apparently a lot of former Soviet bloc countries are showing lower instances of corona deaths than some other places.

No real research or study results so far and its mostly conjecture and anecdotal evidence but interesting reading.

I've found it long suspicious that the media is so focused on making sure Japan does what its told. Cancel the Olympics, capitulate to shut downs, yet at the same time have been praising South Korea.

There's even unrest in some areas of medical Korea, where people are questioning why certain deaths are recorded as Covid-19 and others aren't. They're not fiddling the numbers, so much as just equating some that obviously aren't C19 and others that obviously are, aren't being recorded. (I.E A car accident victim who was in a coma died and was classed as C19, whilst a young man who went to the hospital for fever etc, died and it wasn't determined).

I understand its a crisis, but they also have a very expansive health system that is well funded and underwhelmed atm.

The western media has been very heavy handed in its praise of SK and its condemnation of Japan. It's curious.

I also wouldn't trust Koike very much. She's a bit of a snake. But I especially don't trust people after Asa made those "WHO should be CHO" statements the other day. I feel Japan will be the next country to feel the western media's wrath.

Mandatory in SK too. Australia is actually doing something useful and researching this atm. BCG vaccine.

Also - Some Media deception :

Google headline says "Coronavirus Drug Trials : India Ban on Hydroxychloroquine, Malaria" Bloomberg.
Actual article?

"India Bans ALL EXPORTS of Trump's 'Game Changer' Virus Drug"

Nice deception, Bloomberg/Google!

You won't believe, what I just found out - the Americans are even more stupider, than was thought to be possible. This is literally going into the negative IQ territory. They actually have a mentally ill man, who thinks he's a woman,, running the public health of Pennsylvania state. A crossdressing man in a wig, pretending to be a woman, not only roaming the streets, but working for government! As a surgeon general    Americans literally have a lunatick in charge of their insane asylums   Can't make this shit up... people would call me mad! ROFLMAO I CAN'T EVEN.
The outcome of this disaster will be hilarious, Pennsylvania will get 41%-ed, since main priority will be HRT, pap smears for trannies, dilation and chopping off dicks. R.I.P. anyone living in Pennsylvania, I guess. I'd shed a tear for you, but this is just too funny.

The first thing that I thought of when I saw the picture on the archived website was "why did someone elect Eric Stoltz from "Mask" to a public office?

"Her credentials are sterling. A graduate of Harvard College and the Tulane University School of Medicine, Levine trained in pediatrics and adolescent medicine at New York City's Mount Sinai Medical Center. In addition to her government posts, she is president-elect of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine. She is a trusted national speaker on issues ranging from the opioid crisis to LGBTQ health issues. "
.......
From the Q and A section:

We know that LGBTQ people are at risk for many health issues. One of them is this strain of coronavirus. What message or advice do you have for members of our community in this scary time?

I think that the message would be the same. I think that our community is certainly at risk from COVID-19. This is a novel coronavirus, which means it's new, no one has any immunity to it. There is no accepted treatment, and we have no vaccine. So that is why it's such a public health threat and why we're seeing a global pandemic.

Overall, our community is vulnerable in general, though, because of the stigma that sometimes we face. I think that there has been a lot of concerns about stigma in the health care community. And so when members of the LGBTQ community need health care, we worry about how we will be received. And so I think that that adds just yet another stress to what everybody is feeling now in these very uncertain times. I think it's critically important that members of the LGBTQ community feel as comfortable as possible accessing medical and health care when necessary, and but I know that that's a worry.

I've skimmed other articles and the only info I can find about this public official is they they went to an all boys school (I'm sure nothing untoward happened there,) and all personal info on them has been scrubbed from official sources. Also, they went to Harvard, future site of Jazz Jenning's public meltdown and probable suicide.

Honestly. He seems to be more competent than he may seem at first glance. Yeah the alphabet soup pandering was dumb, but it was a leading question to a group he is claimed to represent, and the weasel words make it fairly obvious to those used to that kinda shit that it is indeed empty pandering and he plans to take no action to make it a reality. Also the introductory part makes it obvious he does know what he's talking about when it comes to medicine and the factors behind Corona's threat level. So it's not perfect but it's above average despite the trooning.

Compare that to Spain's healthcare minister. Yeah he's a cishet white man. But he's a ((((catalonian)))) with a philosophy degree from a diploma mill that only use vacuous bullshit when he talks because I'm fairly sure he doesn't even know that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell much less how to tie his shoes, his only prior achievement was being a local economy minister in catalonia and botching the fuck out of that, and throughout this crisis has had to basically have ISCIII doing everything for him and only popped up to demand political shit was added to pander to the opposition every once in a while. I much prefer your wigger to this fucking asshole.

That kind of racism was reflected in a video one Chicago man posted to his Instagram stories earlier this month. The man filmed himself walking down an empty street in the Andersonville neighborhood. He was lamenting the closing of his favorite record store and restaurants.

“China, when all this passes, I hope your [expletive] country burns to the ground and then sinks into the ocean,” the Chicago man said. “Why, you ask? … Just so that I know it’s sterile before it sinks into the water and poisons all of our water for the rest of the world, you filthy, [expletive] maniacs.”

I fail to see what's wrong with that.

Yeah, I admit it does sound like this official isn't completely at war with reality and could probably handle a disaster like this. It's just that, whenever you see someone trooning out, stanning hard for the LGBTBBQ crowd or pushing Social Justice, they usually turn out to be a blithering incompetent at their jobs (or just unremarkable at them), because they were affirmative-actioned or otherwise activismed into position. It's rare to see the unicorn (troonicorn?) who can actually put doing their job over their getting attention.

Do I get a man harem? A few big strapping six foot four chaps to finally sort the garden out and build me a pergola would be absolutely lovely. If one of them can cook as well even better.

I’m hearing ivermectin has been found to have antiviral effects. Seems like an in vitro study only but anything that’s already out there and safe should be followed up vigorously. Let me try to find a reference

Edited to add references in. Monash - not surprised, they’re a pretty good institution

And I shouldn’t need to say this, but for anyone hard of thinking now this thread is public , some of the dosages of this that people have around for agricultural use are not something you want to ingest as a human. Remember the tank cleaner lady? Don’t be the next idiot who does that.
im shocked SHOCKED @Otterly! I thought you were a demure sensible family little lady! lol

The WHO's twitter feed is a glorious trash fire right now. The mods can't keep up.

I've seen the symptoms timeline all over, but do we have a consensus yet on exactly how long it takes from initial exposure for someone to become infectious before symptoms manifest?

. I’ve never tried blacksmithing, I think you need strength (And a forge) for that, and I am a wee lassie, but I can weld , solder and do basic small scale metal work (heat, pickle and anneal type stuff.)

The biggest logistical problem for it is setting up a safe workspace. Tools are also an issue but if you know basic welding and access to a scrapyard you can assemble a brake-drum forge setup with everything you need for around 150-200 bucks depending on location. Tracking down a decent anvil is more of a pain and too off-topic for here, but the simple tl;dr is don't ever buy from harbor freight.

as walmart goes so goes middle america.

This is suprisingly accurate.

Huge numbers of small rural areas have had all their other major stores driven out of business and are almost wholly dependent on Walmart.

If any of them shutter, whole small towns could be immensely fucked.

I hate to say this, but the numbers in Japan might be doctored even more than the ones from China. It is absolutely ludicrous that they are sitting at such a low number, despite virtually doing nothing to contain the spread. Those paper masks aren't gonna stem the tide of infections and the number of people tested is very low afaik.

Kinda weird, you'd think Abe would protect the elderly, after all, the LDP's main demographic is old people and any lection of the past tried winning over senior citizens by waving fat wads of retirement payments in their face.

Good news everyone! The WHO has contacted social media influences Philip DeFranco, Lily Singh and Trevor Noah to help counteract fake news on Youtube, Facebook, WeChat, Weibo, TikTok, Zoom, Tencent, wumaodang, Hurry up and die you stupid baizuo!, etc

Snarky video from Memeology. The coverage in the real media is a lot more uncritical

E.g. Forbes

On Twitter, the WHO maintains its official account, but its tweeter in chief is very much Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the group’s Ethiopian-born director-general. To his 621,000 followers, Dr. Tedros, as he has styled himself in his Twitter handle, shares practical assessments, videos of Geneva—and encouragement to follow along with WHO initiatives, like the Safe Hands Challenge. He has tweeted nonstop about it during the last two days, tagging everyone from Ronaldo to Korean pop group BTS to convince them to take part.

Here, Kuzmanovic insists only Dr. Tedros can take credit for Dr. Tedros’ success, driven through that rare combination of competency and charm. “We are providing support,” she allows. “But Dr. Tedros is the only one who has access to his account. He in control and in charge.”

The Conversation bemoans the fact that most social media companies aren't doing more to clamp down on non WHO approved views but notes approvingly that Facebook is taking a firm line. In fact, they criticized Twitter for not censoring Elon Musk and Donald Trump, who they think have tweeted 'misinformation', but note approvingly that lesser mortals like McAfee and presumably all non-celebs are being censored if they say anything that the WHO might not like to hear.

Social media companies can block, demote or elevate posts. According to Facebook, the average user sees only 10% of their News Feed and the platforms determine what users see by reordering how stories appear. This means demoting and elevating posts could be as essential as blocking them outright.

Blocking is the most difficult decision because it bumps up against First Amendment rights. Facebook, in particular, has recently been criticized for its unwillingness to block false political ads. But Facebook has had the most clear-cut policy on COVID-19 misinformation. It relies on third-party fact-checkers and health authorities flagging problematic content, and removes posts that fail the tests. It also blocks or restricts hashtags that spread misinformation on its sister platform, Instagram.

Twitter and YouTube have taken less decisive positions. Twitter says it has acted to protect against malicious behaviors. Del Harvey, Twitter’s vice president of trust and safety, told Axios that the company will “remove any pockets of smaller coordinated attempts to distort or inorganically influence the conversation.” YouTube removes videos claiming to prevent infections. However, neither company has a transparent blocking policy founded on solid fact-checking.

While all three platforms are demoting problematic content and elevating content from authoritative sources, the absence of consistent fact-checking standards has created a gray area where misinformation can slip through, particularly for Twitter. Panic-producing tweets claimed prematurely that New York was under lockdown, and bots or fake accounts have slipped in rumors.

Even the principle of deferring to authoritative sources can cause problems. For example, the widely read @realDonaldTrump has tweeted misinformation. Influential figures who are not officially designated authoritative sources have also managed to circulate misinformation. Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, tweeted a false assertion about the coronavirus to 32 million followers and Twitter has declined to remove his tweet. John McAfee, founder of the eponymous security solutions company, also tweeted a false assertion about the coronavirus. That tweet was removed but not before it had been widely shared
