It doesn't sound like a fantastic number, but 30% survival rate of the 5% who might end up on vents is 96.5% survival rate, so it may not be as bad as it seems.

Edit to add: That's just 96.5% of the numbers of infected we already know about in the UK, due to lack of testing there's likely a FAR higher number of infected cases, so the survival rate is likely to be far higher with a far lower percentage showing major symptoms.

Others have said how our exceptional state has been pretty on the ball with regards to the response to this, and I actually agree. But I'm still bracing for a surge of cases here in a week or two and the accompanying 'minorities hardest hit' articles.

You know, this is the kind of shit that people just don't "get" about the States. This behavior, and charismatic "mission essential" Christianity. Well there is a lot of stuff, but really, it is bizarre behavior.

Cases will spike. Some folks are not taking this seriously, and they will spread it to their contacts. Like these A-holes in Oakland ...

I am not a doomer. Most of us will walk away from this. But those that don't will:

- die. That is a very realistic posibility. But catch is, the grim reaper will visit folks who underestimated their risk. And they will die soon after contracting it.

- survive with complications, such as weakened organs. Including the heart.

I agree with you. But what some folks don't seem to get, is that if you are one of the unlucky ones, statistics quickly work against you. And if it kills 2/100, as some people project, that already is somebody you are related to, you work with, a neighbor, a friend ...or you for that matter.

Hmm not sure if any of the other more medically inclined Kiwi's have noticed this finding about this disease probably not being what everyone is thinking it is. An anecdotal account from a NYC doctor DOES IT CAUSE ARDS? This could somewhat explain the lack of effectiveness of the respirators, where there is that 50% failure rate when the patients are put on the respirator. So if anything we are beginning to see some creditably to some of the hydroxychloroquine treatments where there is that time window of reduction in the virus in the early stages. There is actually outside of the popular trump drug, some research being done on Ivermectin another anti-viral that has some effectiveness on reducing COVID replication 24-48 hours after the virus has been introduced. No clinical trials have been done with that finding, but some researchers in Australia have conducted this research.

Hemoglobin study if anyone would like to check it out, there could be some validity to this finding. Especially if we find out that the oxygen deprvation isn't being caused by the pneumonia, rather the pneumonia is just another side effect from what is going on actually with in the blood. Some AI tools that have been developed AI Tool that predicts COVID complications Doomer Boomer Jim shared the smoking link of a lower hospital admission of smokers in China in the early Wuhan studies. So there could be some credibility to the blood disease angle after all, that if anything ARDS is only the last effect that is had once full respiratory failure has been set in.
