Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

so I got my answer why swine flu in 2009 was such a nothingburger comparing to corona: we just passed the total number of deaths in US from H1N1 that happened over a year, and it's just first 2 months...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_swine_flu_pandemic_in_the_United_States
You are only looking at DIRECT deaths. Swine flu killed another 48K people via pneumonia, bringing its total to over 60K in the US.

Corona is currently at 1/4th of that total, 14.400 deaths. Pneumonia caused by corona is counted as a corona death in the US.
About this optimistic "herd immunity".
More and more research points to the fact that people who recovered from WuFlu have low or non-existent antibodies.

https://www.newsweek.com/covid-19-r...s-antibodies-found-recovered-patients-1496776

In addition there were multiple reports of possible reinfection. I know the scientists reporting it were Chinese, but if I remember correctly there was also report from South Korea.

I don't want to sound like a doomer, but I'm not sure what to think about it...
By "multiple reports" you mean two, one in japan and one in south korea. Neither was conclusive. There have been sick nurses and doctors in the US and Spain and Italy that are now back at work, none have been reinfected. Given the test's high false postive/negative rates for clinical tests, and the fact that partial remnants can make the test show up as positive, the only country that has confirmed "reinfection" is China.

DO. NOT. TRUST. CHINA.
We also have wheat and Corn farms over here, specially in the castilles, more than enough that we never really needed imports. You'd be surprised just how efficient fruit and veg farms can get. And also just how much excess of wheat and corn you're producing. 'Cause reason we have so many farms over here is we had to be self sufficient cuz the allies cut all trade with franco and afterwards we basically became europe's farm, but you mofos have been feeding china, most of africa and central europe with carbs since long before that, if you devote even half of the farms you use for exports to change production for healthy shit it'd be more than enough to keep murica well fed and healthy. And as for the ones that'll loose a lotta imports? Fuck 'em. America first and all that.
America is not fat due to farming. That is beyond exceptional. Fresh fruit and veg is very cheap at supermarkets all across the US. The "healthy food is expensive" meme has been debunked for decades, yet people keep pounding that tired old drum.

There are many reasons for the fat epidemic. 1/4 of all meals in the US are eaten at restaurants. Putting aside the massive restaurant portions, hidden calories (that small burger and fries is way denser then you would think), and lack of activity, many of those home meals are frozen food loaded with salt and calories or quick box mix foods. And the US isnt alone. You wax poetic about spain's health, but 26% of Spaniards are obese, compared to 36% of Americans. It's lower, but ya'll still fat as fuck. Most european countries have obesity rates of 20-25%, and those rates are on the upswing. And people are LAZY. Cooking healthy food takes time and practice. Fast food is less healthy, doesnt taste that great, and is expensive per meal, but people are totally stupid when it comes to long term costs, health, and effort. They eat crap food because its convenient.

Canada's numbers today. 18,447 cases, 381 deaths, 4,047 recovered.

EDIT: Also EU will find a joint response, alone because it's just in the very interest of the richer countries. These just don't want blanc cheques, which is understandable thinking how some of the lesser EU countries were run even before the crisis.
We've seen how blanc checques have worked out in the past in the EU.
I can understand that Italy and Spain want that kind of support, but it's more than logical that the EU does not want to give them support on those terms. The EU will help them. The EU will help them soon. But they won't give them a huge wad of cash and go "So now do whatever you like".

And throwing a hissyfit over "not getting any help", when they've received support both economically and humanitarian, is spitting in the face of said help, just cause they might not get the unicorn they wanted and instead might have to settle for a horse.
Let Salvini rattle his sabre, might as well be just an attempt to throw off some criticism and fling it somewhere else, the EU has been a welcome target for such crap by people who stumble over each other to grab some free gibsmedats from the EU the first chance they get.

Pissed would not begin to describe me if I was Spain or Italy. What's the point in being part of a union if you can't count on them in the worst of circumstances?

Spexit/Italiexit when?

Funny thing. Spexit was on Podemos' program when they were formed. It's never left they just never had enough votes to do it. And same with Vox. And since this crisis it's also entered PSOE's program if no aid comes. They now have enough votes between the 3 of them. So if Europe hasn't done anything before the Pacto de la Moncloa comes... It's a very real possibility. And I believe negotiations for that have already begun and plan is to finalize it next week. Tick-tock fuckers.

They can merge into Spitaly. It's practically the same language anyway.

This post makes me really uncomfortable but when I tried to argue against it I keep remembering how when I was on vacation with my parents to Italy at first I tried talking english with people and no one understood us until a shopkeeper heard us talk spanish and went "Aaah! Españoli!!!" And from that point on my mom just talked spanish and everyone understood her... So yeah. It makes me mad. But it ain't wrong.

This half-flag thing should be reserved for after the crisis. During the crisis the flag should be all the way up, everything else is just demotivating imho.

EDIT: Also EU will find a joint response, alone because it's just in the very interest of the richer countries. These just don't want blanc cheques, which is understandable thinking how some of the lesser EU countries were run even before the crisis.

You underestimate central europe's arrogance. Right now Putin is trying to eat up eastern europe. And I know Britain is in talks with south unofficially. Including us. And east has been the only ones to send aid to south... Central Europe is in great risk but if their answer proves anything it's they have no fucking clue that they are. As always they just plan on bleeding us harder. We're colonies after all. Blanc cheques were never on the menu btw, it was meant to be controlled and decided by EU vote as to what the quantity was, so it was a non-blanc cheque. But keep eating that shit netherland claims. See where that takes you... specially as our economy keeps being strangled by YOUR BULLSHIT REGULATIONS while you bitch about how bad WE did things! See where that fucking gets you! I will warn this once more. Spain is getting ready for a trade war. Mobilization has started. As of today, central europe is on the enemy camp, and all we need to do is stop following your laws to immediately cripple your economy unilaterally and definitively. Think twice what your next move will be.

You central europeans not only havent sent us ANY help but infact have been taking it away. Which even fucking TURKEY didn't have the balls to do. Checkoslovaquia, Poland and Russia are the only ones that actually sent aid from europe. And mexico from the outside. So beware. We are livid. And we are ready.

Things are going pretty well here for the most part, though there is the occasional dumbass who still doesn't understand that the grocery store isn't a place to socialize and yap with people in the middle of the aisle.

Michigan, USA

No major developments. Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) will announce tomorrow how much longer she is extending our stay-at-home order.

Personal anecdote: medium-small city in the lower peninsula, not many cases or deaths yet. Had to get the car's oil changed today and a flat tire replaced. Traffic perhaps a little lower, but I never paid much attention before now, so can't say for certain. Good number of people out walking. No one but me wearing a mask, that I saw. Only store clerks wearing gloves. Local store that fixes tire rims was closed; local store that sells used auto parts was open.

Pharmacists may prescribe 60 days of emergency medication and may substitute drugs without physicians approval in event of shortages (archive). Various other medical restrictions loosened (archive).
Restaurants can sell food like grocery stores (archive)

HEALTH CARE
Detroit hospitals are at or near capacity and have reached the point of moving patients out to other hospitals (archive - March 30). (archive of Detroit triage plans)
Detroit-area nurse makes a video (archive)
Detroit hospital staff protest unsafe patient-to-nurse ratio. Asked to leave hospital. Still plan to come back to work. (Their video; news article archive)
Hydroxychloroquine banned by governor's order (archive). Nevermind LOL! Now she's asking the federal government for it and claiming the ban was a typo in the first place. (archive). Detroit-area hospitals are beginning to test the drug's effectiveness as a preventative on first responders and health-care workers (archive).
A look at how many hospital beds, ICU beds, and ventilators Michigan has, by region (archive).

Breaking the lockdown is a misdemeanor, punishable by $1500 fines and 90 days jail time. Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) has stated there will not be a "ramp up" of police enforcement (archive). The attorney general has left it to local law enforcement to close businesses, as her hands are full with price-gougers and con artists (archive).
The police cannot, at present, pull drivers over simply for being out during the shutdown (archive).

DEATH TOLL
Detroit Metro (pop. 3,860,000):*

16,259 confirmed / 821 dead
15,195 confirmed / 728 dead yesterday
(i.e. 93 new deaths, down 4 from previous day)
Normal Detroit Metro Death Rate: 104 per day.**

Other Michigan (6,120,000):

4,087 confirmed / 138 dead
3,775 confirmed / 117 dead yesterday
(i.e. 21 new deaths, same as previous day)
Normal not-Detroit Death Rate: 167 per day**

All Michigan (9,990,000):

20,346 confirmed / 959 dead
18,970 confirmed / 845 dead yesterday
(i.e. 114 new deaths, down 4 from previous day)
Normal Michigan Death Rate: 271 per day.**

Death toll doubled since: April 3.
We have been locked down since: March 24.

Detroit Metro Daily Deaths Last Seven Days:
75 / 53 / 48 / 67 / 92 / 97 / 93 = 525

State Government site, daily - today's archive;
State Gov site, total, includes breakdowns by sex, age, race and ethnicity - today's archive.
*Here defined as the City of Detroit, and Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties, minus state prisoners, who are not counted towards any county's cases, but are kept in a category of their own.
** As of 2018.

Also one Ann Arbor man allegedly killed by his roommate in a Corona-related dispute (archive). The suspect has been released from custody while the investigation continues (archive).

ETA: Can someone who actually knows statistics tell me if I've been reporting the doubling death count right? Yesterday* our total was 845. Half of that is 422.5. Should I have (A) rounded down to April 2, when the toll was 417? (B) rounded up to April 3, when the toll was 479? (C) Rounded to whichever was closer, in this case, but not always, down, to April 2? I've been going with (A) but I'll change it if that's not the standard.
*Today wouldn't work for an example, since it's perfectly, on the nose, twice April 3's count.

Sorry, I couldn't resist...

Nice work by the way.

My car insurer has announced they are going to refund 20% of the premium payments for the next 2 months. Pretty sweet of them tbqh. They say it's because people are driving less but let's be honest, they didnt have to do that.
Insurance regulations are governed by the individual state, your state may have a statutory limit on the profit margin, or your Governor may have signed an E.O. on the issue.
TL : DR they actually may have had to do that.

Yeah, what Cars will you buy? american? what Guns will you buy? russian? who will give you jobs? the Italians? who will buy your vegetables? the Polish?

Thats what you get for your stupid rules. you think we will help you after you took away all our fun at Mallorca?

Surprise: masks made in Chinese sweatshops are not fit for use in hospitals. Who knew?
Better question: If China was mass-producing all of these supplies for the entire world for several decades in a row with very few concerns with the quality of the product that they were selling, how is it now that the pandemic is rolling, suddenly all of the supplies that they're sending to other countries are faulty, inadequate, or already infected when that sort of consistent failure was never a problem before?

I've half a mind to suspect that they're sending out bunk supplies on purpose.

We're already working on renationalizing EVERYTHING. And we already have spanish cars. Guns got me though. HK is tol damn classy, the others better step up their game if they want our money, the G36 and MP5 look too damned good to pass.

Today on DeWine Ball Z, the prisons are still festering hives of disease and DeWine takes a walk with Tim Cook on a farm.

Apple is giving Ohio masks. Hopefully they won't remove any useful features masks have had since the beginning of masks.

Where the fuck is Apple getting 10 million masks to give anybody? The problem is supply, not funding.

I went to the store yesterday and they were selling re-purposed plastic vodka bottles of 'liquid hand sanitizer' made by a local liquor distillery:

Could they have maybe packaged it a way that doesn't encourage winos to guzzle it all and die?

Oh thats gonna end badly. "Great moments in bad marketing decisions!" Forget homeless hobos drinking it. Idiot college kids will.

Morrison is a cuck and for his cuckery is receiving an elevated poll. But polls are polls.
I've always hated Morrison tho, I kind of think of him as the CWC version of a politician. He even gave his politicians a payrise.

Honestly the bush fires were the icing on the cake for me. Watching people on the news refuse to shake his hand made me giggle like an idiot.

Tony Abbot would have been better equipped to deal with this.

Couldn't agree more, the man knows who to handle a crisis.

I feel sad for you with Arden. She's a psychopath. I was talking to a NZ friend today, she really hates Arden, but as she said, Morrison has put us in about the same spot.

I'm going to have to disagree in the most autistic was possible. Over Zealous? Yes. Delusional? Also yes. No understanding of how the internet works? Hard fucking yes. Her response to last march was completely fucking asinine and demonstrated just how exceptional the politicians in NZ are, but calling her a psychopath is autistic. Hell to this day the media here REEEEEEEING about Null telling the Christchurch Police Dept to suck it was the about the only bright spot in that mess.

But when it comes to this plague response there seems for once to have been some sort of plan, even if it will eventually be ignored by the public.

Its too bad both our countries were too short sighted to realise relying on China was a terrible fucking plan from the outset, but hey something, something rockstar economies.

Uncle Clive? Sadly I think he's finished. He's been finished for a while. He's a nice enough guy tho and I think he genuinely cares, he just is a mess.

I agree he's finished, but I disagree that he's a nice guy. He's a fat fucking boil on the arse of QLD who should have been dumped into the sea around the time he stamped his feet like a child and threatened to move his shit to NZ when people refused to go along with his nonsense.

Granted in all my autistic screeching the same could be said of Bob Jones. That dude is fucking ancient and smokes like a chimney.
