Poor hemo memo’s going to get educated quite brutally for this. I still think they originally came up with the term "autism" as a clinical term because "this kid/guy is a fucking asshole and/or astonishingly stupid" doesn't sound as impressive in medical records and might be seen as "cruel" or some pussy nonsense like that.

The first known form of autism, Asperger's Syndrome, was written up By Dr. Hans Asperger in 1944 and called by him "autistic psychopathy". This is around the time that words like "Mongoloid", "cretin", "idiot", "imbecile", and "moron" were legitimate medical terms, and just a few years after Aktion T4 in Nazi Germany had thousands of such people killed. Concern for the feelings of the retarded was not exactly a major issue.

In any case, numerous biomarkers of autism have since been discovered, indicating that there is in fact a distinct condition or set of related conditions afflicting these people. There have also been some successes in reducing autistic symptoms in children with biological interventions like FMT (fecal microbial transplant), which would not be expected to modify behavior in healthy, normal people. There are no such interventions for stupidity or assholishness.

Asperger actually came up with a lot of the positive propaganda about autism like the savant thing specifically to save them from being gassed by Hitler.
