Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Here's the report that Dietz was so sure would solve the mystery of the SARS lab leaks in Beijing back in 2004. The 'joint-WHO Chinese' team arrived in the lab, which had predictably been sterilized and was told the people infected 'weren't known' to have conducted research using the live virus suggesting another infection source 'within the laboratory or possibly elsewhere'. The team decided that as they could not find any infectious source or procedural error the investigation 'would be complex'. And that seems to be the last update I can find.

Really sets your mind at ease, doesn't it?

5 May 2004

Investigation of the source of the current outbreak, first reported on 22 April, continues to focus on the National Institute of Virology in Beijing. The institute is known to have conducted experiments using the live SARS coronavirus during February and March.

Two researchers at the institute developed SARS in late March and mid-April. However, neither is known to have conducted research using the live virus, suggesting some other source of infection within the laboratory or possibly elsewhere.

Members of a joint WHO-Chinese investigative team, wearing full personal protective equipment, entered the institute last Friday and again yesterday. Initial findings indicate that the investigation will be complex, as no single infectious source or single procedural error appears likely to explain infection in the two researchers.

I think even beginning of June is optimistic. If we make it to May 1st without protests I'll be surprised. The death tolls are coming in way under what was modeled, and the rules keep getting stricter and more ridiculous. Either a cop is going to get caught on film pistol-whipping an old lady for sitting down in a park or someone's going to shoot at a politician and then things are going to go south. Alternatively, Netflix goes down for a day or two and the support for the lockdown goes right out the window.
Protests have already grown from 3 dudes to several dozen in Ohio daily for DeWine's conferences, while hard numbers were not given there were enough yesterday that their chants were audible in the conference room. And DeWine has been one of the most open governors throughout this ordeal.

At SOME point a cop is going to try to give some dindus a ticket for violating social distancing and get capped because they're gang members. It's going to happen, then all bets are off. If not that, then the increasing uneasiness over bills coming due will boil over.

Humans were not meant to be isolated all day.

"Joint who chinese" so... joint chinese chinese?

I would be going back to the start, stacking all those sequences up, and redesigning primers from scratch. I’d probably also try nested primers just to cut down on background noise (separately.)
there is good early documentation for the design.
i dont know if there is an english page for it though...

What’s your accuracy rate and how are you checking it?
the Rate isnt that clear since they test more than once if the person looks infected but gets a negative test. the test is atleast 95% accurate or it wouldnt been allowed on the german market.
im not 100% sure how the tests look like since i dont work in a (medical)lab anymore. but i would guess its very closely based on the design of the Charite

S Korea also has really high throughput but they seem to have low accuracy too.
I have no idea, maybe wrong probes?
maybe they tested to early or got their probes from the wrong place. i know that they use deeper test and stool samples if the first test of a heavyly suspected case come back negative.

the swiss and germany have the highest amounts of tests per capita and no news on massive numbers of failed tests or outbreaks because of wrong tests.

The more you think of it, the funnier it is actually. A Chinese CDC knock off released SARS in Beijing multiple times and nothing seemed to be done about it. Imagine if the CDC released deadly viruses in Washington, DC or even Bumfuck, FL even once. People would go to prison over that, the whole CDC leadership would lose their jobs and the lab involved would be shut down. But in China, it gets swept under the rug by the CCP's powerful censorship apparatus so it happens again. Unbelievable.

In fact a bit of Googling turns up this. Someone shipped samples from BSL-4 to BSL-2 which could have been contaminated with Ebola. No one was exposed to the live agent and there were no infections but they obviously take it extremely seriously. Someone was playing fast and loose with biosafety rules and hopefully that someone got moved to a job where they no longer have access to BSL-4.

The US has indeed released pathogens and more into its cities. And done other skeevey things. No one went to prison; however, this does not absolve the CCP from responsibility, criticism or punishment.

"Joint who chinese" so... joint chinese chinese?

It'll be a few VIP foreigners who didn't speak any Mandarin, who stayed in VIP hotels and ate in VIP restaurants away from the public and some Chinese minders who made sure they only see what they're supposed to see.

And note the 'weren't known'. The team didn't talk directly to the infected people, they asked about them in the lab. And the people they asked would know that telling foreigners things foreigners aren't supposed to know can be very bad for your health in the PRC. So they said that the infected researchers weren't working on SARS and the whole thing was an insoluble mystery.

Basically they arrived, moved around in a bubble, decided that it was impossible to figure out what had happened and headed back to civilization to file their expense reports and eat some non VIP food that didn't give them an upset stomach.

I gotta agree. People are talking about quarantines lasting into September or into next year or whatever and you can hither and dither about whether they should last that long but I think it's ridiculous to think the general public would put up with it for that long. I think people are going to collectively stop having it by the beginning of June at the latest.

Can't go out and protest when you're bedridden and coofing.;)

.

Keep the beard, there's a reason men grow them and if you've forgotten your chin, it's a good thing.

Cheers to wisconsin. May I survive this to drink in one of those crazy swiss bars with canton plaques and cheese slab sandwiches while drinking Huber on tap. Amen

Cheese with every meal keeps the coof away.

To be fair, the USA has done disease experiments on large populations for centuries.

That isn't even counting the US military where the experiments are done on soldiers in secret and never exposed.

69 positives in a Jerez old folks home, Jerez is in the province of Cadiz so we don't know if they'll send some our way, 54 of the infected are over 80 so... yeah. Shit's gonna get real there.

On more ridiculous news, the spanish right is now resorting to photoshopping some blatantly fake BOE (state's official boletin) claiming the left has added to the law ridiculous bullshit. I'll link one of those on pdf in case any of the other spanish speakers want a laugh, and also here's a screencap of a tweet with another one (that sadly I couldn't get my hands on) claiming ALL PRIVATE PROPERTY HAS BEEN ABOLISHED. Which in case any of you is stupid enough to believe it, is obviously fake news. I really don't know what their gameplan is but it's obviously backfiring as people are already memeing them to hell and back. So yeah... dumbfucks 100%

Went to the commissary today. Garrison commander out front again today, checking IDs. Got a mask from my wife since you now have to wear one in the commissary. Good supply of water, meat, produce, bread, eggs, milk. Just a few boxes of tissues, but have a case of 30 boxes on the way. No baby wipes, but again, got some on Amazon. No toilet paper or napkins. A number of very thin shelves. Bought a case of TOTMs (MRE-light), for shits and grins. Not much less than an MRE. Costs less than half as much, $51, for a case of 12. Took mask off as soon as I got out of the building. Hard to breathe, uncomfortable.

Once this stuff settles down, see even more people buying more and more online. As they can, also see people laying in reserves of paper products, cleaning products, certain health/beauty items, other nonperishable items, as well as foods that can be frozen for some time.

In my opinion, should people in unhit/lightly-hit areas still be under house arrest as of 1 May, look for pushback to grow, and quickly. One size doesn't fit all. Sheltering-in-place needs to be done rationally instead of politically. Not voting for any local/county/state incumbents in November, but will, of course, vote to re-elect President Trump.

Sure, but what about other 99+% of the population? Lotta people sitting at home, restless and irritable, fighting with their spouses, kids, parents. Full of fear, sure, but also just generally pissed off. Doesn't take much from there to blame the people in charge for their current state.

So, we're going to be getting the IRL version of The Division? At least you won't need uPlay for it.
