Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

wonder if ISIS is going to surge during this, in times of crisis people always turn to religion so they might just catch a second wind and get big again.
Except religion does not necessarily score the goal in the end. The age of reason probably followed the age of plagues for reasons. The desperation of certain religious bodies to continue to gather hints more at reliance on mind control methods that need continual in-person threats or lovebombing. Like scientology acknowledges it can't work over the internet, but bitch isn't god everywhere by default? As far as cults or incipient cults, I'm all for social distancing. A bunch of faith healers have aiready made the jump to the web, they do say this can all work long-distance...

Yet another war in the desert. The ride never ends.

Hopefully our leaders will feel more like this after having to deal with a pandemic and the economic fall out.

Plz no rainbow.

And they are all talking about how smart they are for making useless masks out of their dad's old underwear. And they are only now even thinking about masks because the government now tells them it might be usefull 2 days ago. They also love to talk about how much it sucks having to go to empty supermarkets full of coof because they have nothing on hand for long term shut in.

Meanwhile thanks to the autists here on KF I am sitting cozy at home on piles of food, ammo, real PPE, and legit N95's I got back in January.

I'm sitting pretty on everything except masks due to a giant beard. Yeah, I could just shave it off but it's been so long I'm not sure if I have a chin anymore. Also, due to having an essential as fuck job, I would have to pull some shit like the heeb from new york quantity wise just to be effective.

Quick update too, people in the middle of wisconsin are doing their beer addled mind and brat based blood best too "stay safe". Stopped at a grocery/liquor store to pick up some proper ass norse meed and saw almost everyone wearing bandanas, surgical masks and dust particulate masks. Not an n95 in sight

At some point safety has to supercede culture, but this is China we're talking about...

The more you think of it, the funnier it is actually. A Chinese CDC knock off released SARS in Beijing multiple times and nothing seemed to be done about it. Imagine if the CDC released deadly viruses in Washington, DC or even Bumfuck, FL even once. People would go to prison over that, the whole CDC leadership would lose their jobs and the lab involved would be shut down. But in China, it gets swept under the rug by the CCP's powerful censorship apparatus so it happens again. Unbelievable.

In fact a bit of Googling turns up this. Someone shipped samples from BSL-4 to BSL-2 which could have been contaminated with Ebola. No one was exposed to the live agent and there were no infections but they obviously take it extremely seriously. Someone was playing fast and loose with biosafety rules and hopefully that someone got moved to a job where they no longer have access to BSL-4.

In December, CDC reported that a small amount of material from an experiment that was part of an Ebola virus study was securely transported from a select‐agent‐approved BSL‐4 lab to a select‐agent‐approved BSL‐2 lab and may have contained live virus. The material mistakenly transferred during procedures for this study was on a sealed plate but should not have been moved from the BSL-4 laboratory into the BSL‐2 laboratory. The study involved scientists placing identical oral swab samples from guinea pigs into two sets of tubes—one set of tubes for live virus studies and one set of tubes for studies with inactivated material. The tubes were identical in brand and size and only differentiated by color caps and labels. Appropriate and approved inactivation procedures, consistent with recently implemented laboratory safety improvements, were used. Unfortunately, however, human error resulted in the swabs being placed into tubes in such a way that another technician mistakenly transported the wrong specimens to the BSL-2 lab.

The report also describes two previous recommendations that had not yet been fully implemented in this lab that could potentially have reduced the likelihood of this incident: 1) installation of a camera system for secondary verification of critical safety control points; and 2) proper use of a required Material Transfer Certificate (MTC) form for materials taken out of CDC’s high containment laboratories to lower biosafety level laboratories, including internal transfers.

CDC’s investigation found that immediate steps were taken to minimize any risk to CDC lab staff and that this incident was reported to appropriate authorities in a timely manner. In addition, the involved BSL-4 lab has suspended transfers out of the lab until a full review of the incident is completed and appropriate improvements are initiated. CDC is currently installing camera systems in the BSL-4 laboratory and providing clear instructions on the intended use of the MTC form prior to resuming full BSL-4 operations.

The laboratory technician who worked directly with the specimens in the BSL-2 laboratory completed 21 days of direct active monitoring and reported no illness consistent with Ebola. The agency performed additional laboratory studies on swabs taken the workdays before and after the incident which found it was unlikely that the specimens transferred to the BSL-2 laboratory contained live Ebola virus. Although the studies determined there was no safety risk to CDC staff or the public, CDC will ensure continuous improvements occur to protect the safety of CDC staff and the broader community.

20k dead in the states. With the surge of homeless cases, 100k dead could be a real possibility. That, and the fact that 13 percenters aren’t that great at following directions means that they may be the ten percenters.

One can only hope. I got nothing against european black folk. But american niggers need culling!

Keep the beard, there's a reason men grow them and if you've forgotten your chin, it's a good thing.

Cheers to wisconsin. May I survive this to drink in one of those crazy swiss bars with canton plaques and cheese slab sandwiches while drinking Huber on tap. Amen

Don't get me started on the possible future layers of suck.
WWIII? A total possibility, nationalism will be at another high after this. Anti-Chinese fervor, whether the left like it or not, will be rampant. I can only fear the worst.
Some of these people won't have proper closure because they weren't at their loved ones side when they passed on. Emotional wounds may heal, but the scars will last.
The economy will be utter trash. Sure, it will probably recover, but that's just more piles of pain to add on. The only bright side is that the job market is better, but only because those who passed on left those jobs.

People weren't dying early on because California cities are more spread out. NYC is on a network of islands, so people are crammed. It's easy for a virus to spread that way. I can't speak for Italy, I wouldn't know how the population density works, but since it's smaller than Cali anyway, I'm putting my money on the density.
The network of islands thing would explain why it's spreading like crazy in Montreal, too.

Found another article about the SARS leak in Beijing from back in 2004.

At a news conference in Manila this morning, Associated Press reported, WHO Western Pacific Regional Director Shigeru Omi criticized the laboratory's safeguards and said the authorities did not know yet whether any foreigners had been carrying out medical research in the facility and had since left the country. Laboratory safety “is a serious issue that has to be addressed,” he said. “We have to remain very vigilant.”

China has level three research guidelines and rules in place for handling the SARS virus, which are “of acceptable quality” to WHO, Dietz told The Scientist. But “it's a question of procedures and equipment. Frankly we are going to go in now a take a very close look,” he said.

“We have a team of two or three international experts that's arriving in a day or two. They are going to go into the labs with Ministry of Health people and find out what happened here,” Dietz said.

“We've been told we'll have full access, be able to test all the surfaces, interview people who worked there, and look at documentation to find out what was being done,” Dietz said. “We're not releasing the names of the experts yet, but once you see the names you'll recognize them. They will be international experts from the relevant disciplines.”

In the meantime, the lab has been closed, and the 200 staff have been put in isolation in a hotel near another lab in Cham Ping, about 20 kilometers North of Beijing. China is rushing its own investigative teams to check lab security, according to state media.

Antoine Danchin, an epidemiologist with the Hong Kong University–Pasteur Research Center, who studied the SARS epidemic in Hong Kong, told The Scientist the latest incidents were probably the result of lab accidents.

“Normally, it's not possible to contaminate people even under level two confinement, if the security rules are obeyed, with the appropriate hoods, and so on,” Danchin said. SARS work requires level three. “So it suggests there has been some mishandling of something.”

“The lab might have all the right rules, but the people may not comply! For example, notebooks are not supposed to be taken out, a lot of things like that. A virus doesn't jump on people!” Danchin said. However WHO Beijing is relatively sanguine about the current threat, despite the fact that the 26-year-old infected had taken a long journey on the country's rail network. The index cases are known, and contacts had been traced, Dietz said. “We see no significant public health threat at this point.”

You can see there's some fuckery going on even there. Shigeru Omi was very critical of the lab, Antoine Danchin in Hong Kong was too. But the Dietz guy in Beijing seems to think it'll all be fine. They were going to send some foreigners in to swab surfaces and I'm by the time they get there all those surfaces will have been sterilized and it's no biggie that someone infected with SARS took a long train journey and there were documented cases among people outside the lab and there were two separate releases.

In 2006, Omi was a candidate for Director-General of the WHO but Margaret Chan was appointed instead.

I guess he should have been more careful criticizing Chinese labs if he wanted the top job. Compare and contrast with Chan, who praised North Korea for its population's lack of an obesity problem and said that its healthcare system would be the envy of many developing countries.

After a visit to North Korea in April 2010, Chan said malnutrition was a problem in the country but that North Korea's health system would be the envy of many developing countries because of the abundance of medical staff.[24] She also noted there were no signs of obesity in the country, which is a newly emerging problem in other parts of Asia. Chan's comments marked a significant departure from that of her predecessor, Gro Harlem Brundtland, who said in 2001 that North Korea's health system was near collapse.[25] The director-general's assessment was criticised[who?], including in a Wall Street Journal editorial which called her statements "surreal." The editorial further stated, "Ms. Chan is either winking at the reality to maintain contact with the North or she allowed herself to be fooled."[26]

Yeah, about that....
(Archive)

2020 is becoming whole disaster movie genre rolled into one year. This timeline is insane.
Edit: bleh typo
There will, somewhere, probably the Guardian, be an op ed about how we should embrace and celebrate volcanic doom to lower global temperatures
the primer's just not actually linking to the virus.
>On the same package they send a "free sample" of primers for PCR
>Que chinks claiming it's normal for PCRs if viral load is small to give a fake negative
Either that or they literally sent us the wrong damned primer.
We have a multitude of sequences from strains all over the globe - So someone has gone through, aligned them and redesigned the primers...? Right...? I can just see some Bean counter jobsworth in an office somewhere insisting the lab go with the Chinese primers.
There is something very odd about the testing issue though. No test is perfect, no test is totally accurate or precise. There are always false negatives and positives, it’s just how things are. But to have such a terrible false +/- rate is really not the norm. I would be going back to the start, stacking all those sequences up, and redesigning primers from scratch. I’d probably also try nested primers just to cut down on background noise (separately.)
Could it really be that a nasal swab can be entirely negative for material while deeper samples are positive? That could indicate that the primers are designed across a stretch that breaks down and fragments easily? I don’t know, it just seems like we are missing something fundamental. But this whole thing feels like that - like we are missing a part of the puzzle

Ya, pretty soon all of "us" will be allowed to do outside is crawl on our hands and knees, barking like the animals "they" who shove all these "rules" up our asses consider us to be.
That's some nice autism fam but your friends still violated both the public health order and basic common sense. Their shitty $45 dollar ticket or whatever is not getting overturned by the supreme court.
The black Surgeon General of the US is racist for telling blacks to stop drinking and smoking. Also used the phrase "big momma" which sent a "reporter" into a tizzy. A very large number of black people are dying and certain behaviors directly affect the ability to survive infection but giving out sound medical advice, even if you have a medical degree and you are black, is some sort racist crime now.

If Obama had said the same thing the outrage mob wouldn't even say boo. Of course this all on Twatter so it's probably a nothingburger.
It was way too :optimistic: of me to hope that people would drop this kind of retarded idpol shitlicking in the face of an actual threat.
Will be interesting to see how many people will actually self-quarantine. Suggest pushback is growing nationwide, at least in the states under house arrest.
I gotta agree. People are talking about quarantines lasting into September or into next year or whatever and you can hither and dither about whether they should last that long but I think it's ridiculous to think the general public would put up with it for that long. I think people are going to collectively stop having it by the beginning of June at the latest.

SK used rapid antibody tests in massive areas.
That explains alot...

Mainly false negatives.
I know, it’s an insanely low accuracy isn’t it?
For those non laboratory kiwis - rtPCR and PCR in general is extremely sensitive. You can pick up single copies of sequence and if you’re good, you can use a single cell as a start point. A swab should have loads of viral material All over it. For the tests to be so shitty is unusual.
even 10% are unacceptable in all industry or medical applications.

I only once encountered a Test with such a high fail rate, and that was for a plant with alot of very closely related other species (we stopped that experiment because we couldnt get it right and because our prof wasnt sure anymore if we were looking at one our a couple of species that just look the same and crossbreed from time to time but not always, plant genetic is a bitch...)

-primers cross a divergent sequence and are not picking up different strains (pretty unlikely, it’s be likely that this would be picked up because it would be clustered locally, I’m just spitballing for possible reasons WHY these tests are so crap.)
Well that would be a very bad Primer design. maybe they first used degenerated primer for with Sars genes as base.

- RNA degrades fast - the swabs get dunked in a stabiliser. Maybe that’s not working well
- maybe the primers aren’t so good?
- crap batch of polymerase? Probably not if the controls are coming up
Wrong Temperatures. i would bet the lazy chinks used the GC methode in some old ass software.
thats why you should always do the base stacking methode for Temps yourself, it takes 5 mins on paper and 2 mins with a computer.

The PCRs done with them suck cock.
>Que directives and journos freaking the fuck out and claiming PCR has an extremely high rate of false negatives ermahgerd we'reallgunna die.
>Que chinks claiming it's normal for PCRs if viral load is small to give a fake negative
>union asks me 'cause I talked them about PCRs in the past
>I explain to union that infact a POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION is a REACTION by which a POLYMERASE, POLIMERIZES the fucking virus to amplify it.
>After some repetitions they get it.
did somebody test the same probe batch with high quality kits from germany?

So yeah I have no fucking clue what the chinks did. My best guess is they fucked the polymerase so it didn't even detect the DNA it was meant to clone. Either that or they literally sent us the wrong damned primer. Either way you can imagine how many times I had to say "it came from china what did you expect?" Just to keep myself from going insane.

Ohh i have a bunch of Other ideas how you can fuck up an RT-PCR. send only the 2nd step of a 2 step methode and write in so bad english that people think its a one step solution. forget to pack in the RT as a whole. use shitty one step mixtures that dont work with probes from that collecting source.

Issue is mostly lack of testing. As for reinfection, it's probably only on antibody tests outside of nations that bought the tests from china. Because china. Seriously I have no idea how they managed to fuck a PCR up. It's actually hard to fuck it up. But they found a way that's for damned sure.
well primer design isnt that easy and you need a working brain to do so. a PCR itself is pretty much impossible to fuck up. i have done a couple of them while still intoxicated and they worked like a charm. i even made some the old way(because our prof wanted to punish us) and thats not as easy, but the main way of fucking that up is dropping the sample into the water.

I realy dont get how you can be so slow with PCR testing, germany is at a point where they cant find enough possible infected to run test at full speed and that before the Automated PCR kits are in wide use. 100k tests a week can be done with 10 people and one lab with the automated kits and the supply shouldnt be so bad with them since they can pump out massiv amounts of them.

What’s your accuracy rate and how are you checking it? S Korea also has really high throughput but they seem to have low accuracy too. Something fundamental is being missed. Primers, samples, or PCR cycling temps/times etc ?

They batch probed it with high quality PCRs from spain. That's how they knew it was the tests failing. But you know how that song and dance goes. Lab tells directive "the sample chink PCR tests are shit", the directive tells whoever "the chink PCR tests are shit" and before you know the broken telephone does its fucking job.

Honestly the big slowdowns aren't the test themselves, it's the retarded bureaucrazy behind them. That and all the fucking studies. And god did I never think it'd come a day when I think "that's too many fucking studies we're doing." But we've gotten there!
> European
> Black

Pick one.

Is "black folks that live on the european territories" more to your taste? Point is the ones I see around here, while on average not the ones with the best work ethic, or hygiene, or culture in general, tend to be ok people that at least try to integrate. Except south african migrants. Those are genuinely just the worst. But every statistic about burgerland blacks makes it obvious they are awful fucking people and everything I see or hear from them confirms this. I firmly believe murican culture would seriously benefit if corona havily reduced their number to more manageable levels.

I think even beginning of June is optimistic. If we make it to May 1st without protests I'll be surprised. The death tolls are coming in way under what was modeled, and the rules keep getting stricter and more ridiculous. Either a cop is going to get caught on film pistol-whipping an old lady for sitting down in a park or someone's going to shoot at a politician and then things are going to go south. Alternatively, Netflix goes down for a day or two and the support for the lockdown goes right out the window.
