Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

The Sudden onset from feeling normal to fucked up was like 1 hour which would explain some vids of people just dropping in public thankfully I was at home and had my phone near me. That being said if their are less hearty individuals or they live alone means lots of dead people that didn't get to a hospital.

Yeah that's what is so shitty about this.

Usual advice is to just stay at home if you're sick and only go to the emergency department if you're having trouble breathing. Which is good advice, but the problem is that COVID-19 patients decline FAST. I'm sure many of them don't even make it to the hospital.

Five kids under the age of five? Dude what the fuck is up with your cousin's vagina?

Edit: and how do I get in there?

You wanna make kid #6?

After five births in five years, you can probably dive in, with room to spare.

So tomorrow I will be in sole charge of five kids under five and five dogs.

Friends, send gin. Or another adult, that would help too. I’m living like a fucking gypsy

How about a haz-mat suit instead?

I thought only Americans had these kinds of "lifestyle problems."

Like I said, let them do their thing. Go jump up and down in the name of Jesus. Go to parks, crap in a public loo, eat off a raw buffet. Do it. But don't force me into it.
You don't need a pandemic to stay home.

Don't reopen the school and obligate my kids to attend, because "the whole world can't shut down."
You don't need a pandemic to homeschool.
Don't obligate my husband to go back to work at the office and come into contact with thousands of people again, per week, all in the name of opening up the economy again...The world is not shutting down either. Only non-essential activities and services and schools.
Oh, I get it now. Your family should be kept safe. But the guy who works at the grocery store? Totally fine if he risks catching Corona-Chan to feed the rest of us.

You also want to get kids sick, who recover with testicles and ovaries like marbles for the rest of their lives? Or young adults who aspire to have a family and get married, only to find themselves on dialysis, reproductively sterile, with weak lung function?
...So please, it is easy to volunteer other people into getting infected...please, try to respect the fact that a lot of people are really afraid of this thing
And there we have it. "I don't have a good answer, so you're an asshole who wants people to die."

Everybody is afraid of this thing. That's no excuse for making your every decision through the lens of fear.

The fact is: we are not able to defeat this thing in a manner that would be satisfying to us. We do not have complete dominion over the world. The really nice place we lived in where you could reasonably expect to reach adulthood along with your entire class and nobody died "before their time" has now been very painfully exposed for the historical anomaly that it was. And there is no way back to that place but through. Recognizing that this is going to be nasty yet that there is nothing we can do to stop it (because, again, people aren't going to sit inside for a year or more) is not the same as being a bad person.

They're all too busy posting stupid shit on social media like this...

It just keeps getting worse. I've ignored the whole trend but jfc.

That is the world that you and I had the privelege to come of age in. So we would be very bad people to throw youth out in an environment that we ourselves did not face, or as a society, prepare them to face.

I do have a solution, actually. Just give it a couple of months. They are learning new stuff every day about this virus. Just allow scientists, epidemiologists and state governments to figure things out a bit, to curtail unnecessary deaths.

And if people want to worship and drink in bars etc, they would be excellent study populations.

I have no solutions for cashiers, except for their employers to allow them to work behind a shield and give them face masks. And we can do our part to protect them by not being complete dumbfucks and reducing our errands to a minimum.

But the fact that cashiers are exposed doesn't mean that non-cashiers should share the burden and expose themselves. In fact, with much of the workforce working from home, cashiers are LESS exposed than they would be.

Another idea I have bounced around in my own echo-chamber head, is the posibility of making school go thru the summer, and taking its 2.5 month break during the worst of the flu season. I know that it would suck to lose summers, but that would reduce a lot of contact by default.

btw I caught the virus and as a 29 healthy but a smoker it was pretty fucked up my test came back after I was admited to a Canadian hospital and they told me my immune system "Overreacted" which is what put me there. Now im fine and was released after 3 days. I have no serious symptoms other then my chest and lower back are very sore. So what happened was for around a 6 hour period my chest started spazzing out kinda like a gripping clutch to my heart happened then a spike in temperature which lasted around an hour or so it subsided. then i had a major full body inflammatory response which was scary and lasted around 30 seconds. After that the only way I could explain it is "I forgot how to breath" I had to really try to breath not that my lungs couldn't handle it but my brain not operating normally i had to remember to breath in so 50% of my attention was for breathing I would go 6 seconds without remembering to breath back in, this took several hours to correct before I was brave enough to sleep. I slept 15 hours and woke up shaky but stable and I feel fine now and even started to smoke again but this shit is fucked up.

forgot to mention i felt fine hours before like normal shit crept up out of nowhere i was asymptomatic.

Glad to hear you are OK. How long did the symptoms last in hospital? Or were they just holding your for 3 days for observation? Did they have to give you oxygen at any point?

So this would have 2 major consequences:

1. we already have an obesity crisis, and your solution would make it worse. Let's give kids 2.5 months off when its too cold and dark to go outside, that wont backfire at all.

2. You've just put every summer camp and water park out of businesses, or in a severely reduced capacity, in addition to amusement parks, for whom the summer makes up the lions share of profits.

All this to avoid 60K deaths a year in a country that has 2.2 million deaths a year typically. Oh, also, additional taxes to pay for electric bills, those schools are not air conditioned all summer, now you have to pay for their cooling, and they will have to be heated regardless to avoid pipes freezing.

I notice it's always whyte people making these dancing tiktoks. Black people might blame racism for their disproportionally high Corona death rate, but I pin it on the fact that their paleface nursing staff are too busy twerking to their awful hoochie music to give a damn about them.

Interesting article about lines these days.

Check out the pic of all the cars in line in San Antonio waiting for food from a food bank. Don't believe San Antonio has many cases. Why can't the house arrest be lifted? Many of these people waiting for food could go back to work. Don't think the food bank has or can get enough food to give to 10,000 families even once, much less twice.

My cousin has fired her nanny with her customary impeccable timing and judgement. But has to work this week and the weeks coming nevertheless. An emergency solution was needed...

So tomorrow I will be in sole charge of five kids under five and five dogs.

She says they might need to stay over a night or two depending on how long she is tied up at work. The kids are absolutely thrilled.

Friends, send gin. Or another adult, that would help too. I’m living like a fucking gypsy
I suggest a BFG 9000 for the Dogs, the Plasma Rifle for kids 1-4 and The Chainsaw for the last child.

Edit : Just as an Update, my place of work started a new program while I was on my days off. We go in a specific entrance and have to get asked questions and have our temperature taken. I wanted to ask my manager (who is gay) "If we fail, do we get a big pink star to wear on our sleeve?" of course he is so un-educated I am sure he wouldn't get the reference anyways.

The ones with black people in them actually have a semblance of coordination:

Brazil has almost no quarantine to speak of but Brazilian cultural institutions aren't trusting it and are voluntairly locking down:

BRAZILIAN ARTS INSTITUTIONS REMAIN CLOSED DESPITE PRESIDENT’S CALL FOR BUSINESSES TO REOPEN

Arts institutions in Brazil are pushing back against President Jair Bolsonaro’s call for businesses to reopen and individuals to return to work. The leader has given speeches in which he says that the concerns over the novel coronavirus are overblown and has been harshly criticized by his opponents, Brazil’s health authority, and even political allies for adopting such a blasé attitude toward the outbreak in the country, which has claimed more than two hundred lives and infected nearly six thousand people.
...
Despite Bolsonaro’s reassurances that COVID-19 is just “a little cold,” only three of Brazil’s twenty-seven states have rolled back social distancing measures, and, according to The Guardian, a recent study found that 60 percent of Brazilians are self-isolating at home. Wilson Witzel, the conservative governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro and a former ally of the president, defied Bolsonaro’s call to loosen restrictions and told his constituents not to leave their homes on Monday.

João Doria, the governor of São Paulo, is still enforcing a quarantine of the state’s 44 million residents. He made his opinion on how the nation should be responding to the pandemic clear when he declared earlier this week, “Do not follow the guidance of the president.”

Covid-19 and prostitution:

Susanne Bleier Wilp, a spokeswoman for the Association of Erotic and Sexual Services Providers, or BESD, said the virus had caused fear and uncertainty in the sex trade. "There are those who are withdrawing from the business entirely at the moment for safety reasons". This measure is unlikely to effectively stop the spread of the virus during close physical contact, according to the medical experts. A German woman in the sex trade who preferred to stay anonymous said that she continues to accept punters due to a complete lack of resources. Moreover, she charges less, because relatively few customers are willing to take the risk these days, hence expecting discounts.

A brothel in Sydney (New South Wales, Australia), another jurisdiction with "decriminalised" sex trade, has been fined $5000 for staying open despite Coronavirus restrictions. Three women have also been fined $1000 each for "providing services", yet the punters weren't fined at all.
...
The upper-end well-paid escorts can survive without income for about a month, but then they have to look for risky solutions. The risks include being out in case of opting for webcamming, or contracting the coronavirus and being fined in case of providing sexual services despite the lockdown.

Imagine that, Covid-19 is making the Johns stay home.

The next time my urban friends razz me for living out in the sticks away from "art, culture, ethnic food and anything that's worth doing in life," I'm going to show them these pictures. I'd rather travel an hour in a car to get to "art and culture", than have to wait 8 hours in a car for food and basic needs during emergencies.

Well, I think the key difference that we're having here is that you believe we have more agency (as a society, or maybe from the perspective of our medical/scientific institutions) in this situation than I do. In my opinion, we are not "throwing the youth" into an environment. The environment has changed on us. We all now have reduced survival value, but not to an apocalyptic degree.

As far as just giving it a couple of months... how many? How long does a "temporary" hunkering down go on until it's effectively permanent? And if we hit three months into this without a particularly good strategy beyond "keep waiting for a vaccine", what then? Are we really going to be able to hide for "just another week or two to see" on repeat? People have had to push through really nasty plagues before while still doing the basics of doing day-to-day work and starting families and, depending on the society, becoming educated throughout history. Why do we get to hide when they did not?

What makes us special? Because if what makes us special is that we're better at defeating/handling disease and plagues than they were, well Corona-Chan has already called that into question.

We're honestly just spoiled, as a society. Apparently we can afford to slam the brakes for indefinite amounts of time.
