Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

The environmentalists must be pleased

With roads cleared of traffic because of the coronavirus pandemic, some cities across the country have repurposed streets into car-free zones, giving pedestrians and cyclists extra room to spread out and practice social distancing.

Cities including Boston, Minneapolis and Oakland, Calif., have closed streets to through motor traffic. Others are extending sidewalks to make more space for pedestrians looking to stay at least six feet apart. And some municipalities are considering adopting similar measures.

If we actually looked at Typhoid Mary as a standard we would lock up all HIV carriers.

Typhoid Mary was a pathological case, in all sense of the word

https://web.archive.org/web/20200326110946/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Mallon

In prison, she was forced to give stool and urine samples. Authorities suggested removing her gallbladder because they believed typhoid bacteria resided there.[15] However, she refused as she did not believe she carried the disease. She was also unwilling to cease working as a cook.[8]

Mallon attracted so much media attention that she was called "Typhoid Mary" in a 1908 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Later, in a textbook that defined typhoid fever, she was again called "Typhoid Mary".[16]

Eventually, Eugene H. Porter, the New York State Commissioner of Health, decided that disease carriers should no longer be kept in isolation and that Mallon could be freed if she agreed to stop working as a cook and take reasonable steps to prevent transmitting typhoid to others. On February 19, 1910, Mallon agreed that she was "prepared to change her occupation (that of a cook), and would give assurance by affidavit that she would upon her release take such hygienic precautions as would protect those with whom she came in contact, from infection." She was released from quarantine and returned to the mainland.[17]

Release and second quarantine 1915–1938

Upon her release, Mallon was given a job as a laundress, which paid less than cooking. After several unsuccessful years of working as a laundress, she changed her name to Mary Brown and returned to her former occupation despite having been explicitly instructed not to. For the next five years, she worked in a number of kitchens; wherever she worked, there were outbreaks of typhoid. However, she changed jobs frequently, and Soper was unable to find her.[8]

In 1915, Mallon started another major outbreak, this time at Sloane Hospital for Women in New York City. Twenty-five people were infected, and two died. She again left, but the police were able to find and arrest her when she took food to a friend on Long Island.[8][17] After arresting her, public health authorities returned her to quarantine on North Brother Island on March 27, 1915. She was still unwilling to have her gallbladder removed.[17]

Mallon remained confined for the remainder of her life. She became a minor celebrity and was occasionally interviewed by the media. They were told not to accept even water from her.[8] Later, she was allowed to work as a technician in the island's laboratory, washing bottles.[10]

She was quarantined but released after giving an affidavit that she wouldn't work as a cook. She changed her name, took a job as a cook and infected people. At which point she was quarantined again but even then it seems like the release was on the cards if she'd agreed to have her gallbladder removed it's just that she refused. It was a tough situation but I think what happened to her was justified.

Even with HIV bugspreaders it's not quite the same. You could argue that bugchasers are giving informed consent to have their negholes pozzed[1]. It'd be different if someone was an asymptomatic carrier and was infected random customers at a kitchen.

[1] At this point I'm just shitposting to see if I can get another random_txt.txt entry.

Charlotte Woman Hasn't Left Her Home In Three Weeks But Tested Positive For COVID-19

Reddit thread commenting on the article which stays fairly sane until it gets a little weird. People bake their mail to kill germs? Da fuck? - https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronaviru...rlotte_woman_hadnt_left_her_house_in_3_weeks/

The woman didn't leave her home, but her husband had been out and about quite a bit. Surely she caught the virus from a delivered package, right? It's the only logical way.

Yeah, Ben Franklins quote comes to mind about how Those Who Would Give Up Liberty for Safety, Deserve Neither.

I was talking with someone the other day whose basic stance was "I would give up all my freedoms for my safety! What good are freedoms if you're dead!?" That kind of attitude just makes my jaw drop, I don't even know how to respond. People like that are just so fucking lost that I doubt anything can be done for them.
Benjamin Franklin also didnt believe in a bill of rights and that if anyone tried to cancel you, anyone that supported what you said would come to your aid. Basically the federalists were like the sort of dipshits that usually end up in power during Latin American revolutions.

If it was up to Franklin, we would all be attacking anyone that tried to destroy our fearless feeders site.

In Franklin's world the US would just be an entire population of Timothy McVeighs agankst an entire population of Janet Renos. Which is exactly what you would expect from some guy that chose to live in Philly, where even Santa is a target of violence.

Thats what i hate about when people quote the founding fathers, they can pull a quote from anytime and people act like they said it in 1776. Its like when people use that Washington quote about political parties; he said it near the tail end of his own presidency when it became clear that people werent going to follow the federalists agenda. It was just a fancy way of saying "stop attacking us" and was seen as such at the time. On actual farms growing kiwis people were at the forum calling the federalists out for doing essentially an old timey version of saying "everyone that disagrees with us is a nazi"

Meanwhile in modern times, after ww2 ended, the population of the west decided to vote the fuckers out as soon as they could. People were fed up and voted for the other party even if they disagreed woth their views. It was essentially the only reason the GOP got a majority in Congress since Hoover, the next time that happened was during the Clinton administration (40+ years later)

Tl;dr the vast majority of the population is willing to bide their time and once its safe, throw the fuckers out

Ever heard the saying "A stopped clock is right twice a day?" Just because someone has questionable views on certain subjects doesn't mean they can't make a valid point now and then.

Another Dr. Campbell video on why fever is part of your immune system response. The implication is that you should not take drugs like ibuprofen or paracetamol which reduce it. In fact, maybe a hot bath or sauna might help. If you are a lizard spend more time in the sun when you're sick.

This is where so many of these politicians lacking all semblance of nuance should take into consideration the legal doctrine of "reasonable accommodation". The Government has a major overriding public interest (not spreading a plague) that has run into a constitutional right. Two in fact. The right of assembly and religion. Rather then just flat out banning both of them, the mayor should have done something like order "Okay, I can't stop you from doing this, but I can require you all to wear masks and have someone checking temperatures at the door". And then fine them if they don't do THAT. He's not banning the gathering or the worship, he's addressing the underlying public interest instead and requiring reasonable accommodation.

But I suppose thats much harder to think through over "IMMA SEND MY JACKBOOTS TO ROUND YOU ALL UP!".
I feel like drive-in church services is already a perfect happy medium. Everyone stays in their cars 6+feet apart, everyone talks about jesus or whatever. Risk of transmission is dramatically reduced because niggas is behind windows and shit and the god botherers get to be excoriated for their sins as much as they want. It works for everyone. If you try and ban christcuddling entirely, you're going to get extreme pushback and everything you're trying to do will collapse. Aside from constitutional concerns and etc, it's like a textbook example of letting perfect be the enemy of good.

Somebody in my town (LA) is trying to get us to go out and protest today. I doubt anyone is going to show up.
View attachment 1226001

Maybe people working in ICU'S and morgue will show up. Show up to tell them all to fuck off.

We are up to 8,889 cases, 267 deaths.

Where I live there are a couple of families who don't seem to be shut-ins but otherwise things are pretty dead. If you drive downtown you might notice how shiny things look without the accumulation of soot on the buildings. It is trippy.

All of this sucks for us, too. This is boring and depressing seeing business shutter, parks being completely still, weeds overgrowing, pay cuts, furloughs and layoffs .... landlords are being fed a shit sandwich in a major way.

This isn't going to last forever. They are just biding time until they learn more about who is susceptible, how long immunities last, mutation rate, and vaccine research.

I am curious to see who shows up.

How not to impose a lockdown:

- Be Turkey
- Do nothing to stop the spread of coronavirus in your country at first
- Thousands of cases with infection rising exponentially
- Over 1,000 dead
- Government shits its pants, declares a 48-hour lockdown in majority of the country (ARCHIVE)
- They give the population only two-hours notice of said lockdown, thus causing people to panic and rush to stores to get supplies (ARCHIVE)
- Corona-chan ready to get her twerk on with thousands of panicked citizens
- 48-hour lockdown? Laughs in Bugman
- TL;DR Turkey's government went full retard
- Erdogan fucks up like he always does
- Needs scapegoat for colossal fuckup
- Turkey's Interior Minister conveniently falls on the sword for him (ARCHIVE)

Drive thru grape juice and sour dough bread?

Look, if people want to all hump each other en masse in the name of Jay-Zus, fucking let them. I am over it. I am convinced. Let them practice their religion and their right to get sick and their right to deal with the consequences. Just like the JW's who refuse blood transfusions. Let them. I am serious. People on here convinced me.

The Catholic bishops shut down masses. Catholics are used to pandemics. They know that God ain't gonna be much help when your head is in a bag in the ICU. They also know that no priest is going to be allowed in to deliver you the Eucharist, or administer last rites. And that if you catch this disease and die, you will not be able to have relatives near you, to say good bye.

The whole thing is fucking traumatic for the recovering and the could-have died, and the dead, and for those treating them. High incidents of infections are almost entirely avoidable. You want your mother, father, aunt, best friend, child, fellow parishioner ... whisked off on a hospital bed? You would be lucky to even retrieve the body if this pandemic goes out of control.

If people are willing to risk this level of trauma, Halelulia!

Some might even refrain from attending church, knowing the risks.

But knowing that people are gathering by the hundreds in the name of Jesus, other people ought to take some common-sense measures to prevent themselves from getting sick.

They have little to no intention of easing restrictions. They keep drumming "new normal" for a reason.

Just like here in the USA, at least on the state level. Here, "they" consider "us" to be no more than animals. "They" don't give flying fuck one about all the people who have lost their jobs. Why should they? Their paychecks always come, just like "them" in Oz. But "they" here don't understand yet...pushback here is just starting. Find ways to push back, passively or actively without getting in trouble. If there is no pushback "they" assume they can do any damned thing they please to you.

For something different, interesting op-ed re the ChiCom Flu and Macron of France.

My cousin has fired her nanny with her customary impeccable timing and judgement. But has to work this week and the weeks coming nevertheless. An emergency solution was needed...

So tomorrow I will be in sole charge of five kids under five and five dogs.

She says they might need to stay over a night or two depending on how long she is tied up at work. The kids are absolutely thrilled.

Friends, send gin. Or another adult, that would help too. I’m living like a fucking gypsy

I don't know if even a temporary UBI would help once food shortages start to emerge.

Also, just randomly came across this... 🤮

Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire police get to join the "lolcow Police farce" group along with the petty tit heads of Derbyshire.

If anything, it shows that Priti has her work cut out for her to actually fix the whole national police system. Giving the NCA some actual teeth and officers to handle the gang crime across force lines would be a good start.

Also, Harry Cole (for it is he) has revealed the reality of BoJo's Kiss with Corona-Chan, and it was a lot worse than thought:

Look guys, we need to have a talk. This is going to a bit long and condescending, but I have a point here.

I know people get off on the doomer "this is worse than governments are saying and we're all going to die," shit but here's the thing. This is not just happening in the United States where you guys have all the CIA cloak and dagger shit.

I live in Canada. The provinces of Canada and the Canadian government have separate and well defined jurisdictions and powers. The Federal government did not create the provincial governments and the provincial governments are not subservient to the federal government. The provinces are created by the Queen and derive their power from the crown the same as the feds. The government of Canada has the ability to force provincial governments to do some things, for example they can implement new taxes, or change the criminal code as they did when they legalized marijuana, but for the most part they have no power to actually implement these directives and it's largely left up to the provinces. We do not, for example, have national health care in Canada. We have 10 provinces, each with their own healthcare system. If I'm from Ontario and I go to Alberta and get sick, I'm not covered because I'm not a resident of Alberta. What happens is the government of Alberta actually sends a bill to the government of Ontario for my care and Ontario foots the bill for my treatment. So you have a system where functionally the provinces are in charge of internal affairs that are handled at a national level in most other countries, and the federal government is in charge of more big picture things like international trade, fiscal policy and the criminal code. We don't even have free trade between the provinces. Going from PEI to Quebec to Alberta feels almost as distinct as going to three different countries in the EU, because the provinces are in charge of so much. This is also why the provinces carry so much debt compared to other sub national entities.

Here's how that relates to the current situation, the response to COVID-19 has largely been carried out in Canada at a provincial level as it almost entirely falls within provincial jurisdiction. The feds have cut taxes and started printing money and have closed the international borders, but the provinces had declared states of emergencies and closed their own borders long before this. The Federal government tried to take control of the response and got told to fuck off by the provinces quite publicly. So the separation of powers in this situation is clear, and we know the feds are not pulling the strings behind the scenes because Trudeau got so publicly cucked by the provinces when he tried to take control.

So what does all this have to do with the doomer shit?

Well, we've established the the provinces operate essentially as tiny nation states when it comes to their own internal affairs. We've established that the COVID-19 situation is almost entirely in provincial jurisdiction. Here's the thing, there are several provinces in Canada that are geographically bigger than most states with populations well under a million. I live in one of them. So you've got these sub-national entities in charge of all their own internal affairs that are just as big or bigger than most European countries with regards to size, with fewer people than a mid-sized US metro area.

Having lived in one of these places my entire life three things are readily apparent:

1) The government is incompetent, does not have the resources to effectively govern and no one takes it seriously. Which is fine by me because when you're outside any kind of municipality and away from a main highway you're effectively living under anarchy with no building codes and no enforcement unless someone calls the cops. All the little tourist places around have all their own little signs they put on the highway. The government decided this looked untidy and passed a law that said they had to be removed and you had to buy these uniform signs through the government. No one listened. The government didn't have the resources to enforce the law. The signs are all still there. Nothing changed. As far as far as I know the law is still on the books with no hopes of ever being enforced. The government asked the public to pretty please with sugar on top do something, we said no, and they couldn't do shit.

2) The government cannot keep anything under wraps. It always gets out. Everyone knows an MHA. Everyone knows everyone. Everyone is related. Everything gets out. The government here couldn't even kill a mentally retarded man in a rural area who was no longer on speaking terms with his family without everyone knowing about it. The government can't handle it's own internal investigation into harassment in the legislature without everyone finding out.

3) The government is nearly insolvent and had to go to the feds after it failed to sell bonds at a favourable rate on the open market.

So that brings us to our current situation. The official government stats as of this writing are 241 total cases, 120 recovered, 6 hospitalized, 3 dead, for a total of 118 active cases. Two out of three of those deaths my mom texted me before the government officially released the new numbers for the day saying something along the lines of, "Oh, so and so died of the virus, he was a volunteer fireman with your uncle."

So everyone knows everyone and the news of anyone dying travels at the speed of light. And then you guys are here telling me this government in charge of the COVID-19 response that is nearly bankrupt, can't cover up of the killing of one of one mentally ill hoarder and doesn't have the resources to enforce a ban on roadside signs, is able to cover up something as significant as a bunch of COVID-19 deaths and more serious symptoms that have been thus far kept under wraps?

Sir, you are retarded.
The Federal government tried to take control of the response and got told to fuck off by the provinces quite publicly (Archive)

Even when they admit that the WHO fucked up, they still have to try and frame it as a "vast, right-wing conspiracy" because they're psychotic idiots who think that the rest of us are as brainless as their hyper-moderated Twitter circle that banned everyone to the Right of Lenin 4 years ago using every blocklist on the planet.

This seems like the perfect thing to use a Pi Zero W for. Have it constantly send out the string that indicates someone is infected. Add a small battery pack and inconspicuously place it on top of the claw machine in front of the local Walmart. For $20 you could easily set the infected flag on a large portion of the local population.
