What you said makes me think we should have a closed species thread, what do you guys think?
God I want that thread to happen so bad. I hate closed species creators and their sheep fans. I've seen fans chimp out on literal children because they found a species they liked and wanted to draw their own but "cLoSeD sPeCiEs Do NoT mAkE yOuR oWn!!!!!!!!"

The concept of closed species is fucking stupid. You can have rules and regulations all you want but it's based on trusting others and even non-members to comply. The creators have to trust non-owners to not make their own character and when they come across an unauthorised character, they go on the attack and make themselves look like creative dictators. "No, you don't have the free will to make a character that's based on a non patented concept". It's not the law that stops people from making unauthorised closed species, it's social pressure.

Scarfoxes, Grems, and Cinnadogs are some of the worse closed species. Scarfoxes are usually upwards of a couple of hundreds to thousands of dollars to get and their fans will attack anything even with large scarf hands as being a fake scarfox. Grems are generally shitty and will now permanently ban/blacklist you if you void a grem from being in the species (Basically saying you no longer want them to be a Grem and don't want them on the masterlist) even if you made the design yourself and not the owner or a guest artist. Cinnadogs I've heard the owner of has had a bad history of design theft, character revoking, and generally tism fits that makes the species a nightmare to deal with.

Some CS communities are better than others but that doesn't stop from how unoriginal they usually are. It's even joked about by some owners and then some owners will get so offended by rip off/off brand species they will blacklist from do anything of that species and people who own it.
What's a Grem? My Google Fu is not working today.

Then somebody better make a good OP. ;)
Cause if you’re gonna have a thread, then you better make an OP first.

I'll admit - the thought of making a thread on Close Species 'spergs is tempting because this is something I'm very interested in, but I feel a little daunted by the idea of making a good thread.

I'm going too try and make an OP, if any has some bad closed species and some drama please let me know.

Would pokemon fusion groups be viable for the "closed species" category too? You'd be amazed at how restrictive some groups are when it comes to the designs of the mons themselves - hell, I know at least one group where the mods basically designed fusions for members and said: "Use this one," which defeated the point of letting people make their own designs in the first place.

My thoughts on it were always if you want a closed species, keep it to yourself and your friends. Don't share it to the public. But the thought of people spending thousands of dollars on your totally original species is just too tantalizing to these guys. myos (Short for Make Your Own) in particular are fucking whack. Imagine paying someone 50$ just to design the character yourself.

You just reminded me of an artists that me and my partner found on deviantart that was bitching that people were stealing their fused design of Alolan Vulpix and Galar Ponyta. The artist went on and on about how people should be crediting them because they were the first to make the fusion and couldn't be selling pokemon fusions based around them. That was a laugh since people commenting were telling them that was retarded and they swiftly deleted that journal because people were reaming their ass hard.

I know that Chimerons need to be included. They use to allow people to make their first one for free but the owner of this chameleon based species soon fully closed it and it made Chimerons worth upwards of hundreds of dollars. The owner made the species after they became popular in the youtube animation community and people wanted to make characters that were the same species as her's. The fans will also go a bit nutty if people have a chameleon character with similar anatomy to chimerons.
Imprims are also really strange and almost mimic grems with the only difference being they have hoods.

Were there any drama between Imprims and Grems?

This blog has more of the drama revolving around Grems. The species is something of an ARPG where they hold like contests where you can draw pictures that need to be done with a full background and other requirements and side quests. These events can have upwards of 300 people joining them for prizes. However the wording of the event is vague and doesn't mention only a few people get the rewards. The rewards handed out also seem to go to larger more well known people in the community.
Are we talking about fictional species or neolithic tribes? These names are weird.
All closed species have strange names. There's Mignyans, Strudels, Dainties, Dreamies.

Creators wanting to have control over their creations is kind of expected. With open species you risk a lot of shit; Sergals are a good example of this, with so many questionable people using them for their fursonas I imagine some creators think that keeping their species being monetary bindings might prevent weirdos from co-opting their creation.

On the other side of that, just because money is exchanging hands doesn't mean the rules are enforceable, and it's very easy for creators to take people's money and change the rules after the fact. Making species exclusive to art/writing applications and/or monetary values might deter Johnny Skinhead from making a Nazi-themed OC, but if original species creators can revoke the rights at any time without return of funds that's just as much of a scam, and saying "well they made it slightly more purple than it was" as justification for not allowing someone to keep the rights to use the thing they bought however the fuck they want is a massive overreach.

Creators can literally just set up a "canon" and "non-canon" structure for their stupid species; canon being characters created and designed by the creator for adopt use, and non-canon being characters created by fans; non-canon characters that fit into canon well enough can be provided with canon certification and used in stories later, without restricting them to just rping with "official" characters; just that any roleplaying with non-canon characters is not considered official and doesn't provide rewards.

That way the weirdos can create their eight-breasted, nine-assed, purple people eater color variants and the spergs who want a rigid rp structure can both be at least somewhat happy. You can also simply remove the canon status from characters if their owner/rper/whatever decides to go off the rails and making their character a fuckface; they can still keep the character they bought and all the other shit, and can continue to use it, it's just no longer certified as part of the group so rping with them doesn't offer anything.

Ah, Grems. Back in the day, the creator of the species had a species known as Shadow-cats. Shadow-cats had some strange rules: if you didn't draw them once a week, they'd get taken away even though you paid for them. They'd be about 5 points each, if I remember correctly, so not much but still wasted Points. I wish I remembered the drama behind Shadow-cats, I just remember mine getting taken away because I didn't draw them. 10 points wasted. :(

I think before Shadow-cats, the creator was a thief or scammer of some kind. I don't remember since it's been half a decade since the species was retired.

ETA: Those designs are extremely low quality for a species as expensive as Grems. Imagine spending 100 dollars or more on one of those.

God damn those are ugly.

Also, I recommend Primagens as an insane closed species. About as popular with furries as Sergals, they're very expensive and also have a free version (Protogens). Protogens and Primagens look identical, so buying a Primagen is a clout thing.

Speaking of Primagens/Protogens, I used to be in the telegram group with some admins and such (long since deleted, no screencaps) And some of the mods (aka, Primagen owners) ticks are the funniest shit. The whole Proto Community is a joke. I have quite a few stories of them and their stupidity...

Please tell me about it. I’d love to hear about it.

Basically every day there was another argument as well as rule reminder over a "trigger" topic for one of the primagen mods. I cant for the life of me remember which, this was back in 2018 before the chat was deleted. However, this trigger topic was "fat". There was like 2 or 3 different people with morbidly obese protogens either just posting art of their character or saying the word fat. It was like an insta-trigger for a mod to pop into the chat and ree at everyone. They also had nonstop arguments over whether wings were allowed or this kinda marking or multiple limbs, ect. Also bitching about the absurd price of a primagen (which now is upwards of 9k) resulted in either an autistic sperging of rants by the mods or instaban. Any shittalking on Ascii also resulted in a ban and major aggression from the mods. I also remember someone getting bitched at by Mochi for saying that 5k was fucking stupid for a digital character with not even that much art in the package. (Seriously even if you autobuy the fucking thing its like a ref and a fullbody for 3k come the fuck on) It was... honestly absolutely ridiculous. I lurked there most the time since it was such a fucking mess.

And this doesn't even include the rather recent #FreeTheProtogens or some bullshit like that on Twitter. If you tapped the tag? All reeing about them not allowing porn or obese characters. Thats all that was. People wanted "freedom" to make their sonas fuck or fat. I wish I was joking. Just a quick google search on 'fat protogen' brings up quite a few so literally nothing is stopping these people from making morbidly obese creatures, they just wanted clout.
