The Last of Us Franchise - Because it's apparently a franchise now. This thread has been double-DMCA’d by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

I was thinking about Last of Us earlier, the writing of it and I have no where else to put this so I'll put it here. I really dislike how people mindlessly praise how The Last of Us is some expertly written story that proves video games can be art when in all honesty the writing is perfectly average.

It's not a badly written story by any means. But the whole idea of "in this apocalypse humanity is the REAL monster" is such an overplayed generic element. It's been done thousands of times before and while Last of Us doesn't do it badly, it doesn't do anything new with it either. It's perfectly generic. Amazingly average.

It's to a point where i believe if Druckman was a better writer, he would've actually done something fresh with it. Being that all the humans in this apocalypse are actually nice and helpful people. People who look out for each other. Would even be very easy to justify. Have Joel still be vastly distrustful since he lived in a military area as he does and since the military is particularly harsh and strict, he's distrustful of the motivations and intents of others.

But when he gets out he slowly realizes people are mostly good on the outside and trustworthy. Why? Because people who are openly hostile and traitorous don't really work together in groups well and thus wouldn't survive an apocalypse. That's the thing these stories never really touch on. The whole "survival of the fittest" narrative doesn't typically work. Just like there's no society of murderers in real life, because they'd just kill each other.

Could even keep the same twist, Joel goes from place to place with Ellie, getting helped and meeting good people, and he still decides to be selfish at the end.

Iunno, I know no one cares. I just think that would've been a lot more interesting and fresh than just "wow zombies are scary. but MAN is scarier." yeah Druckman. I too read Lord of the Flies in 8th grade.

yes, companies tend to postpone releases of 100 metacritic score games because they like money so much
they also constantly release flagship titles in whatever state because that what sells those games, not postpone release and/or crunch hard (something schreier never complained about btw!) to rework the issues that might affect sales. and when you postpone a flagship title indefinitely there is no way a company will ever use it to push their next console launch in the near future, no way.
The game's finished. It's not changing course. You can't selectively take what Schreier says seriously on a factual basis.
They've postponed it indefinitely because they do not know when they'll be able to print and distribute the optimum number of disks.

If they put it on PS4 at all (and they will, that's not up for debate), that's where it sells the most. Period.

Are they going to use Iron Man VR, which also got delayed indefinitely to push PS5? Probably not.

You're also assuming that the next gen consoles don't get delayed out of this year; I'd say there's a good chance they will be.

If/when there are other games delayed as Schreier says, would you still subscribe to this theory.

This whole thing is heartbreaking for me because I really really liked the first game. Yeah, it's not an original concept and the gameplay isn't especially great but I enjoyed the interactions between Joel and Ellie as well as some subtle emotional visuals here and there. The game had atmosphere and mood and some occasionally magical moments (the giraffe scene for example). Of all the games they had to buttfuck and ruin, I didn't want it to be this one.

Since it looks like Joel is dead to get rid of all cis het male characters, I no longer give a shit. I hope this game crashes and burns.

Schreier, for all his faults, does seem to get good insider information. He's got lots of connections within the industry, so when he's actually reporting something, he's usually correct.

They've postponed it indefinitely because they do not know when they'll be able to print and distribute the optimum number of disks.

That's not been the case with any other game released this year, from Doom Eternal, to FF7 Remake, to RE3 Remake, to Animal Crossing. Nintendo, Square Enix, Zenimax, and Capcom can ship games just fine but Sony can't?

If they put it on PS4 at all (and they will, that's not up for debate), that's where it sells the most. Period.

You are very adamant on this with little to back it up and no reason to latch on to it. Though its possible that it comes on PS4 only, is just as possible for it to be a crossplatform game, or for it to be moved to PS5 to give that console an early killer app.

You're also assuming that the next gen consoles don't get delayed out of this year; I'd say there's a good chance they will be.
Possible, but it hasn't happened yet. The game companies seem determined to launch this year, and they are probably counting on the pandemic simmering down then. We probably won't know till later in the year. That being said, its just as possible that The Last of Us II gets delayed just as much to coincide with the console release.

There's a small, spiteful part of me that wants this game to be a complete fiasco just so I can smug on all the Film Theory 101 brainlets who instantly declared TLOU1 to be the Citizen Kane of games and proof that vidya is art because it accomplishes the bare minimum of a competent narrative. Yes, compared to most other video games it's got a pretty good story, but divorce it from that context and it's basically an above-average episode of the Walking Dead. Hardly breathtaking stuff if you've experienced literally any other form of visual entertainment.

And now it looks like ND is throwing even that meager achievement out the window so they can indulge their teenage lesbo fetish and have the plot of the game basically center around totally pwning the developers' dads icky Christians. It's so sophomoric and juvenile it's almost cute.

isn't that "the main villains are homophobic christian cult" literally just a 4chan rumor tho? I assume that's what you're referencing.

They definitely have that whole Christian cult vibe going on the trailers, especially the first one. That part is probably true, if only because its the most cliche possibility.

Call me optimistic, but with these recent developments, I get the feeling that The Last of Us 2 will do to woke games what the movie "Heaven's Gate" did to Westerns.

That is, effectively kill an already declining genre for decades and be remembered as one of the biggest flops in the history of its medium.

Like, these unexpected TBA delays and cancellations for what is supposed to be the long awaited sequel in a core franchise for a major first-party developer are not a good sign and make me think there might be some actual credibility to the 4chan leaks this time.

The Cyberpunk 2077 delays may seem troubling, but that game's been in an extended development for years already and CD Projekt Red doesn't have anywhere near the amount of finances and resources that Sony has.

Also unlike The Last of Us 2: Wokester Boogaloo, Cyberpunk 2077 still has a projected release date and isn't just "TBA"

Love this part because it's what I always hated about right-wing Nietzscheanism. It's usually just naked posturing but the idea that anyone can actually live the way this philosophy describes is laughable. You will get old, you will lose, you will get tired or proud and fail. And if a bunch of ubermensch got together they'd fuck eachother out of existence. Acknowledging the fact of human "weakness", that people want to live decent lives, is a critical part of becoming an adult. It's children who think they are invincible. And really the real BASED take is that the scoundrels, cheats, aggressors, and marauders all live by the tacit acquiescence of the decent majority. They're not actually powerful.
Edit: I am sure Nietzsche's actual writing is more nuanced, but we know the people who regurgitate the cliffs notes version.

I have no doubt that if an apocalypse event happened there would definitely be roaming rape gangs and the like for awhile. but if I recall Last of Us takes place like..20 fucking years after the apocalypse, doesn't it? Who are these rape gangs of 40-50 year old men still going around in the wild? I'd imagine at some point people in general would just settle down and try to work together as a society for longevity.

but I guess that removes the reason to have human enemies if there's no rapist or cannibal assaulting Ellie every 20 seconds huh?

This groundbreaking story exploiting the fuck out of "protect woman" will always make me laugh. It relies on gender tropes while then trying to subvert them in juvenile ways (Ellie becomes a badass and lesbian).

Given the game was doomed from the start the moment they made Elie's gay girlfriend a jew and the stuff she wears is more likely stuff that most folks in the conspiracy theory community would call Zionism. The tranny voice actor claiming all white men are evil and need to Minecraft themselves on Twitter. The many times the game had folks leaving to one story about a MeToo'd moment where one of their former workers got raped by a gay man. (People suggest that man is the gay Jewish guy who works for ND) The past E3's where Sony isn't even trying to please folks with The Last of Us 2 to a point where Sony said fuck E3 and never went back since to now recent rumors on 4Chan that if true? Will alienate their gamer fanbase if they try to claim that this cult hates gay people and wants them dead because reasons even in a world where Zombies bite you and you turn into a zombie fast is sad and fucking idiotic to boot. Makes me believe that Sony probably will piss off the hardcore type of Christians that already have problems with the video games where they worry kids will turn into the next mass shooter and putting the game on hold after the virus was going to kill people who would be the type to buy Sony's games. It's not looking good for Sony fam. They are retarded, to say the least.

Oh wow I totally believe it then.

Wait, what?
You probably should. If you've been paying attention, he hasn't been wrong for a long time. I don't like the guy either, I have many posts on here that denote that. But he knows what's going on at these studios.

I don't like wokeness either guys, but this thread reads like a preemptive strike because too many of the "wrong type of people" are involved in this game. The same mentality we ridicule wokies for.

I would assume there is some type of cult in the game that resembles religious fundamentalism of some type.
First game to do it? Fuck no. First game for right-of-center spergs to preemptively winge about?

This happened with Far Cry 5, too. People on both ends of the aut-I mean, political spectrum were either rallying for or against the game for seemingly making a narrative out of "rural and religious" Trump's America. Didn't work out quite that way, did it?

Neil Druckmann isn't the game version of Kelly Sue DeConnick. He doesn't insult his customers, or openly bloviate about his own personal politics, or inappropriately infuse them in his writing at the detriment of his products. Yes, Nadine exists, and yes he did say some shit about the first big "nonsexualized female protagonist" with TLOU, but neither of those things bother me.

The former is a small part of a game in which Nadine effectively loses in the grand scheme of things anyway, and when Ellie was 14 in TLOU, so, no shit. Lol

Hell, I would imagine that he's politically rightward of Jason Schreier. At least, on the subject of labor.

Taking this random 4Chan rumor (likely motivated by a similar disdain for "the enemy") with no salt and pontificating about the "clear signs that this game is in trouble" is pretty dumb.

Do I think the guy is some kind of Game Dev Messiah? No. I personally enjoyed Amy Hennig's writing on Uncharted to his, but he knows what he's doing with TLOU. And he's got a good enough track record for me to not hinge my expectations on his political leanings. Which are, at least on a social level, "left" of center.

People were sure Rian Johnson wouldnt fuck things up either.

Also it seems the last 5 years, that whatever leak you read on 4chan. The stupider it is the more likely it is to be true. People were sure the leaks for GOT, TFA, TLJ, STD, and FF7 weren't real either.

I read a leak on /v/ that said the new Smash Bros. would be called Ultimate and would have Daisy, Ridley and K. Rool in it. I laughed it off as wistful fanfiction.
