Dammit, Kiki and Tombo's friendship was one of the cutest parts of the film. And ffs, she's thirteen, god forbid a girl that age possibly like a boy and be a little tsundere for him. It's not even like they made out or anything, the film left it open.
He doesn't even stalk her, they keep meeting by chance. And it later strongly implies that he lives near the bakery Kiki is staying at, so was just heading to the bakery when he saw her the third time and discovered she was staying there.
People who only ship gay ships are some of the most batshit insane people I've ever seen. They'll go through ginormous lengths to justify their gay ships.
Oh boy, shipping wars are a lot of fun to read about, especially when they last long past the end of the show like with true tears, Aquarion Evol, and the eternal evangelion. The current crop of twitter/tumblr shippers are a real step down I find, just slapping you with stupid labels when you disagree with their ships. Can't wait for the Fruits Basket anime to confirm Tohru and Kyo as the main ship. Animeonlys are going to have a meltdown over it not being Yuki and how "problematic" half the ships are.
Small, but still funny. Pathetic Twitterinas still think that Ghibli's When Marnie Was There was queerbaity and moan against the HUGE and SPOILERIFFIC plot twist (hence the 'squares' to cover up the spoiler itself) that rendered the Anna/Marnie ship completely impossible.
I bet that if Marnie was a boy, they'd call him "creep" and "stalker", not some "lesbian goddess"!!
(Also, Marnie and Anna were twelve. These people wail about being called pedos but then they justify and excuse shipping little kids... only as long as they're ~lesbians~ or ~gays~. Way to give more fuel to the gross and unfair "all gay are pedophiles" stereoype, idiots.)
It's been a while since I've seen the movie but their read of it being queerbaiting makes me believe they weren't really engaging with the movie.
It's shown from the very beginning that Anna is an introvert whose attitude towards others makes it impossible to make any friends or get close to anyone. She also feels alone in her own family due to them being foster parents (She doesn't even call her foster mother "mom" until the end of the movie). Anna feels isolated and alone, all at the tender age of 12. Moving to the country was an opportunity to try and make friends in a place where she doesn't have the baggage of being "that girl" and she still fucks up by lashing out at one of the local girls. She meets Marine after this and is able to open up to her due to Marine's character and the belief that they shared similar pains. This is the first time in the movie that Anna is able to open up to someone about all her insecurities (belief that her foster parents don't love her because they get paid by the government to keep her, how she hurts people around her, her loneliness, etc.) I don't really see it as romantic.
Hell, the main theme song of the movie even narrates Anna's loneliness and insecurities, not about her yearning for Marine.
There was never any "undertones" that they're whining about. Anna felt that she was unwanted by everyone around her, but Marine helped her realize that wasn't the case.
How the fuck do you misread a movie so hard, especially a movie aimed at such a young audience. Like, it's aimed at kids around the same age as Anna who might feel they're going through the same thing.

I haven't seen the movie but do remember seeing the trailer when it came out and that actually did me make think this might be a lesbian or atleast girl love teasing movie. Trailer didn't tell anything about Anna's struggles as a foster child but was all about how wonderful she sees Marnie and how badly she wants be like her, with her or help her. It didn't look that much of like a kid's movie, just a chibli movie witch have been for many target ages. Could that be it? Like they saw the trailer, were sure it was going to be a beautiful movie about lesbians and just kept running with it.

I feel like that's the most believable explanation since the movie itself is pretty in your face about Anna's struggles.
I went into the movie without having seen any of the trailers but watching some of them now they don't really give a good indication of the movie. It wouldn't be the first time that a movie or series has had questionable marketing.
I get it. You have a kink for fictional incest. Not exactly my kink, but whatever. Now would you please pull your hand out of your panties / boxers and be honest about it rather than trying to pass it off as SO DEEP and SO MUCH MORE MEANINGFUL than ~ew normie bland pairings~? You're not more ~special and different~ for liking it, anyway.
I also like how it seems it's only ~good and hot incest~ when it's m/m. LMAO.

The thing is, atleast some (usually sibling-less) people legit have such mindset - still remember how years ago, a girl in our class casually asked my bestie if she was into her brother (he was cool, and she talked about him a lot), and online, I have seen argumentation along the lines of "why would anyone spend time with *sneers* a relative, unless they're fucking".
So this happened a week ago but I forgot to mention it here: There's an anime airing right now called Fugou keij: balance unlimited that stars two prettyboy detectives and you can probably see where this is heading. Funnily enough there's a part in the OP where rich detective holds a woman in his arms
and people started to spread a rumor she was rich detective's fiancee which lead to shit like:
And then episode 2 aired and it's revealed she shares a last name with rich detective. It's not outright stated they're siblings but considering they have a similar face it's pretty likely and this whole drama is even more embarrassing now than it already was.

Reminds me of the horrified tit tantrums all over the Yuri on Ice!!! fandom when a "next-episode" trailer showed Sara (the Italian female skater) and Yuuri hugging and people screeched "SARA WILL MAKE YURI STRAIGHT WAHHHHH!!!". And yet nothing of that took place; iirc Yuuri was hugging EVERYONE in his path and, in the case of Yurio, even chasing them around when they didn't want his hugs. . .
Fangirls really get terrified when their OTP's *may* be threatened in any ways, and especially by THE ICKY GIRLS.

Not even surprised.
Crazy fangirls have always been hating on female characters that get in the way of their gay ship or because they’re obsessed with the character.
I remember how this was especially prevalent in the kingdom hearts fanbase at some point and it sort of still is but to a lesser extent now.
Elsa/Anna was big for a while though, so I'd say gay is a pass in general (just like with everything else). But yes, it's less common than brother and brother/sister incest (as far as I can tell).

Well Dipper/Mabel is pretty big. There is also plenty of those two plus Pacifica, Wendy or Bill for some sweet ménage à trois. Then again these tend be more straight up porn rather stuff than omg cutes couple ever.

The only het incest ship I remember fans being Die For Our Ship about was Ephraim/Eirika in FE Sacred Stones. Tana got bashed for liking Ephraim, while the localization was pre-emptively shrieked at because shippers feared losing all that subtext.

Ephraim and Erika were like the only major straight incest ship that was moderately popular.
Still, even so I don’t think even the gay ones are as accepted anymore either considering how many antis were screaming that sheith is incest, despite them not being blood related or even legally whatsoever.
The funniest breakdown I've ever witnessed was in the exceptional Tokyo Ghoul fandom. The anime is a travesty but the manga, edgelord-y as it may be, was decent imo. Decent enough for me to finish it and actively follow the creator, at least.
Everything was fine: Fujoshits ran the fandom, ofc. Filthy het shippers were laughed and mocked. The usual.
THEN in one of the later chapters of the manga SHIT HIT THE FAN! The mangaka paired up whiny mc with one of the main female characters - not just paired him up but they had sex (during which she got pregnant) and oh boy did shit fly off the rails.
Long story short: the manga artist made his twitter account private for a brief amount of time after getting sent a ton of death threats, really vile shit, and images of the female character being beheaded etc. They demanded he *fix* this travesty. When he came back online he really just stopped interacting as enthusiastically as he was (though he's back to being a dork now) and I wouldn't be surprised if he had to block a ton of people. Over on the Tumblr side fans were making hate accounts for the ship, and in particular for the female character (Touka), while some kept their cool, hopeful either she'd die graphically in the final battle of the half-ghoul kid would kill her. But that didn't happen - the manga ended with an epilogue in which not only did the couple stay together (and were married for several years) but had a daughter and were pregnant with another. He probably had that planned for awhile, but I want to believe he only doubled down because of the anger he caused.
Either way the salt was delicious.
To this day you can still see a few people sperging about the mlm ship that never was. A common saying they like to use is that "touken shippers have no rights" - touken being the ship name for the canon ship.
It's so gloriously stupid that I laugh every time I think about it. I did feel sorry the manga author though, but he seems more than over it.
Oh yeah, I remember browsing /a/ when that chapter first dropped and the anons had a field day with screencapping tumblr and twitter salt. I never got into the anime or the manga so I had no horse in that race and I just looked at the meltdowns and laughed.
