Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Here in Ohio, DeWine didn't say anything deliberate or helpful. Just "we're going to start to reopen May 1st and it's up to the individual" so I'm really looking forward to waves of my countrymen (I say that in a disgraced fashion) dropping dead and scratching their heads while wondering, "how could we have stopped this?"

I'll check back into reality when Trump swings from the gallows. Until then, I'm living my best life away from everyone and everything.
OK Doomer.

Look at the stats for Ohio. Cyahoga county, the hardest hit of any county, had 42 ICU cases at peak and currently has 36 cases, and 231 hospitalizations at peak and 159 today. This is total, not just corona cases, and to put that in perspective, they have 5850 hospital beds, 931 ICU beds without emergency measures, and is using 3.9% of its total ventilator capacity. This is the HARDEST HIT county in ohio. Other counties with large infection populations are looking at lower percentages of used beds. And we still have half a month of lockdown, in which time the number of active cases in hospital will continue to decrease. By May 1st, we will have fewer in hospital and ICU then we did on march 15th, before the lockdowns started.

There are counties with worse percentages, but these are counties with ICU capacities int he single digits and total hospital bed capacity in the low double digits. More then a handful of corona cases will fuck these places regardless of lockdown, and if they get hit hard their cases will be airlifted to Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, ece. These areas also do not have the heavily populated urban areas that spread Corona so easily.

For Ohio, it doesnt make sense to stay locked down past May 1st. DeWine realizes this. The vast majority of deaths are in the retiree elderly populations, and these populations are being encouraged to stay home through may as well. The majority of young deaths are due to a collapsing medical system, which Ohioans have avoided with their adherence to social distancing. We have bought the time to expand the medical system and PPE production (and remember, we still have another 15 days before things open up again) which will be able to handle smaller spikes. In the event of major spikes, we would have to engage social distancing again, but the chances of that fall with every passing day, and the size of spikes we can handle increases with every passing day as well.

Your TDS and your disdain for your fellow Americans is very disheartening. Perhaps you can afford to remain in your bunker for 6 months, but many cannot. We are not new york, we are not currently being overrun, there is no reason to hide unless case numbers start expanding again, and you know the government and medical systems will be watching for that. We know how fast this spreads, and we know the symptoms. We'll be able to act much faster the second time around, and with greater precision.

I predict Trump's detractors will look at his decision to leave opening up to state governors and say "Well I didn't vote for the guy and there are many issues of policy on which I disagree but this is a very reasonable policy which I can't find fault with".

No. TDS people would revile and curse President Trump even if he cured everyone sick with the ChiCom flu with a wave of one hand and resurrected all who had died of this virus with a wave of the other hand. Donald Trump can never do any right in the eyes of those afflicted with TDS.

edit: told them their son is their problem tonight and I will call them tomorrow. I’m going to bed. Thanks for the reality check.

So... spouse hasn’t been living here since the weekend. There was an incident. The end result was I called my parents in law to come take him back to their house because he can’t be here with the kids for a while. Sufficient powerlevelling.

He’s had a blow up with my father in law, who is now blowing up my phone saying that he’s elderly and doesn’t want to live with someone who is exposed daily. This is... disingenuous, but also true. Spouse is also claiming to be running a temperature, which I’m not in a position to verify.

I... don’t know what to do. Do I call the police non emergency line for advice or is that a massive overreaction? Do the lockdown rules mean I have to let him back in? It’s after one in the fucking morning and I’m struggling to think straight.

If your spouse is unstable, letting him back into a house with 5 young kids while displaying symptoms is a bad idea.
Call the authorities. If he is displaying symptoms, he needs to go to the hospital and be checked (as you said before, he works in the medical field, so getting him tested shouldnt be that hard) and keep him in quarantine there. Remind your father in law that if you get sick there are 5 kids you would be unable to care for, and ask him if he is volunteering to take care of all 5 in your husband gets you and them sick.

If he was physical with you, you should be able to get some type of temporary restraining order to keep him away from the house. Not super sure about UK law.

Trusting the government to act quickly on anything sounds like a great way to get killed tbh

We still don't know a lot about this virus. Shit I miss normal life too but even in Bumfuck, Nowhere we had cases explode from 0 to nearly 50 in like three weeks, and that's with the stay-home order in place.

Or as I like to put it: New study reveals that U.S. has 22 million non-essential jobs, while the other 80% of us have been going on as normal wondering "What shutdown?"

I've been working as normal this whole time and my industry is clearly something any individual person would say is non-essential. Of course, according to the definitions of essential we've been handed by the state, we qualify in no fewer than 3 separate ways. Last I checked our sales have been basically unchanged this whole time as well.

As for people who don't think its time to start opening up now that we've spooled up relevant production and gathered a month of actually useful data, I'd love to see their criteria for what they're waiting for. Do they want to keep things shutdown for 2 to 3 years so that several vaccines can be tried, tested, probably fail a few times, and have their effects analysed? Maybe they'd prefer to wait for the slow trickly of asymptomatic cases that'll never go away to build up herd immunity, that should only take what, 15 years at this rate? Or perhaps the best solution is to just keep everything shut down until the number of open ICU beds available in Bumsfuck, Idaho exceeds the current worldwide human population.

I knew this shit with the phones was coming, I just didn't know this would be the catalyst. I switched to a KaiOS based dumbphone with custom rom over the winter. KaiOS has a bunch of spyware preloaded too, but the custom rom stripped it all out and disabled updates. I watched it with wire shark for three days. Nothing going out over wifi with mobile data turned off besides querying my email provider's server once every 20 minutes. It can still make calls, text, take pictures, play MP3s & FM radio and it has a native email client. I can live with typing on the keypad. Sucks for young single people though. I understand the only way to get your dick wet now is through smartphone apps.

So in today's "the media makes no sense ever". Brought to you by the big brains at Politico.

Trump realizes that things will have to reopen soon, if not for the damage to the economy that would result in more deaths in the following years (depression, debt, homelessness) simply the fact that I see people getting very restless now, unless missiles are hitting buildings or people are spewing blood on the street, people are going to push back more. I already see people getting out more, organizing exercise groups. I give it another week or so.

I'm starting to get really annoyed with the normie virtue signalers in my social media. "Thank you, essential workers!" Yeah, all of these people who are thanking essential workers are (a) teachers, and (b) government workers ... People who still have jobs and income.

It's not like the people who have lost their jobs in the last month have ever considered their means of earning a living as "essential" in the first place. Nope. Fuck them; they've made no sacrifices whatsoever compared to the stunning and brave teachers of the world, who will get paid no matter what at this point.

When things get back to normal, I bet these Karen types will go right back to treating their local trash collectors as nobodies and their grocery store workers as incompetent people who are below them. They sure love to give shoutouts to them right now though ... Because it makes them look like such great and caring people.

I'm sick of seeing disingenuous and overdramatic shit like this.

"I want to die for capitalism."

Yeah no. It's more like "I want to be able to be self-reliant again and to be able to earn some form of income again to put food on my table."

I’m continually amazed that people still don’t know how to wear a face mask. It goes over your nose For The Love Of God. Restriction of Breathing is Part of How They Work. Say what you will about if it does or doesn’t help but at least show your people know how to put one on.

And Ohio has seen their case load decrease, with hospitals largely empty. That's why they are lifting the stay in place order. We know a lot more about how this virus spreads, its effects, and how much the hospitals can manage now then before the outbreak. And we know that a miracle drug is highly unlikely, and that the economy cannot take being locked down much longer without severe ramifications, worse then what we already have to deal with.

Placing an end date on the lockdown helps keep people calm and cooperative. The places giving out nebulous "locked down until further notice" orders will see continued civil unrest.

EDIT: I should point out that in some states some areas will likely stay under lockdown for longer due to hotbed cases, and if we had hotspots of cases I would be in favor of another 2-3 week lockdown, applied surgically to areas with high activity, to bring cases back under control if the medical system was becoming strained, say at 50% capacity (thus the continued upswing for another 2 weeks could be handled). But under the current case load it makes sense to life lockdown and resume economic activity to try and salvage as much as possible before the next time this happens, the estimate right now is we will have less then 50 total hospitalizations in a state of 11 million by the end of april.

My take? Well It pretty much goes with what we have been stating on the many vectors it has been transmitted. We have stated months ago that there will be many people infected that won't showed any symptoms. I really think that many of these talking heads should come to KiwiFarms to get the real dirt on what is going on. They may learn a few things.

Your demand to be self-reliant is in the way of their wet dream of being completely and utterly dependent on daddy state.

A couple of interesting articles -

I saw someone on Twitter that as soon as the crisis affects journalist's salaries and jobs, we'll see more stories about ending the lockdown. Lo and behold, here they come. NPR is facing a 16 to 25 million dollar deficit, Vox. Conde Nast, and the Los Angeles Times are all furloughing workers. I feel like the days of "Just sit at home and watch Netflix while getting food via grubhub forever and ever" is coming to an end.

I'm not worried about catching the virus at this point. I'm worried about everything else. People support the lockdown and the governors now, but what's going to happen in a few months if the economy doesn't come roaring back and people are facing of being a Domino's delivery guy for the rest of their lives or their children not being able to go to college? What's going to happen in the summer if people can't go to the beach but they've got the cops hassling them because their three-year-old isn't wearing a facemask properly. Are we going to see riots? Are people going to start shooting at politicians? I hate to sound like a doomer, but I really worry the situation in this country is about to get a lot uglier.
