There's a pretty simple mindset to counter that

The guy on the right... his room in his mother's basement has the goofiest wallpaper. Also those clothes he is wearing are legally able to vote and those glasses were stolen from a child. I've seen it with my own eyes when I used to do crack with him when I was 30. He's an asshole.

That sounds like what a perfidious faggot leaf would say to me.

Apparently my local area has zero confirmed cases. Pressing X to doubt. Back to work for me next week though, we will see if my coworkers are actually healthy or not. Personal health update, finally most over this nasty bronchitus I've had since early Feb. Been talking with other locals over social media, apparently most of us here got a severe flu/cold that would not go away back in Nov/Dec. One local said 7 weeks of feeling like death until she recovered. I wonder if it was the Wu Flu

Some people here are getting really antsy to go back to normal, not thinking of second wave infections. Or just beyond caring, which is probably worse. Once in a while you see someone in mask+gloves. Most store employees are wearing gloves, if not a mask as well. I get the feeling that noone really trusts Trudeau or Dr. Tam to give us actual information.

Thing with spain is, unlike many other places, our universities actually care about who gets out of them. Like, STEM is a full oldschool magisterial motherfucking process of unnatural sellection. Practically every classmate I've had that has gone to one of those programs to go outside the country says everywhere else is way more relaxed, and judging by what they send us most of them have to have things made easier for them, no joke Erasmus students over here have quite a reputation for being duller than even the exceptional individuals like me.

Point is, as a result they teach us a LOT more shit than most, and between those things are stuff like "how to deal with X", amongst those classes are things like "How to handle the economic aspects of a laboratory", "the actual law", "ISO regulations" and "How to deal with a journo", they're not their own matter they're mostly part of other matters. But this last one, "how to deal with a journo", might as well be "why journalists all suck."

The most important originator of the meme is one thing. See, when scientists have a problem with what you told them. Much like forum members over here, they tell you what the problem is, so you can explain further or admit you made a mistake.

When journos don't get a snappy headline, much like trolls, they ask you to repeat without explaining the issue. This is because your subconscious will invariably cause you to explain things more "for dummies" when you're consciously repeating yourself, and they hope this will make for a better looking statement.

Issue is of course better looking statements doesn't mean more accurate statements. So like a fucking intellectual arms race, now they gotta explain that shit to us so we don't get tripped subconsciously and say something incorrect. I've seen people try to defend this practice by the journos as "ok for standardized interviews", but most get the memmo that the journo isn't being honest with you. And scientists don't like dishonesty.

This is where the first meme comes, as knowing of this practice caused since the 90s a meme to arise, said meme being scientists asking others to "explain it to me like I'm a journalist" when they want to say "I did not get a thing of that", this with time has essentially devolved to the point where nowadays many use "work for the news" or "journalist" to mean "fucking idiot", and the memes are glorious btw.

The second factor that has affected seriously is the tendency of journos to grab whatever medicine is being tested and ultrahype it. They literally start hyping that shit when the animal tests START. Whereas we know they're likely to get rejected until after the human tests. So again, being taught how to avoid unnecessary hype being put behind your words causes students to realize... Journos are dishonest. And then we get to the frankenbite, what Potholer 54 explained and the dirty debate tactics they use, for example, to defend "miracle enzimes" and other such bullshit. And you see, yeah they definitely are a buncha lying cunts.

Then you add how much easier their degrees are (because journalism is a shit career everywhere) and how much they tend to push for the radical leftie stupid ass legislation and postmodern bullshit, and you can imagine how much vilw builds up. So at least here in spain, STEM really has a bone to pick with those cunts. And honestly. Every time I try to give them a chance I get reminded why we're correct in doing so!

If he was a devout catholic (and recognized as such by the churche's bureaucrazy.) He could be declared a Beato. And then if a miracle is recognized after his death (some cookoo bastard claims he saw his face on toast or some shit like that) he could be declared a saint by the pope.

That sounds like what a perfidious faggot leaf would say to me.
Interesting to hear a bit about Spanish education and how you guys handle talking to journalists. As far as I know over here we tend to not talk directly to them at all and often use press statements instead written by communication officers (who can be fellow scientists who are just heavily experienced in dealing with moronic journalists).
Overhyping is still a major issue though, journos catch wind of some study about a new treatment that is working in mice and take that as though it's gonna clear trials and it's gonna be the miracle that saves us all.
It has gotten to a point where pointing out "in mice" or "in vitro" has become a meme.

Trying to find any secondary issues data, like suicide rate, is all but non-existent. I suppose most of the info won't be available until people turn up missing, and the data collection is slower in general. A few articles showed up on the potential impact wuflu could have on suicide rates, including one on JAMA

I don't find the 9/11 comparison in the article valid. Most people in the US were back to work within a day, certainly within a week, outside of NYC. Also the economic impact is different- flights were halted after 9/11 but resumed after a week, albeit with reduced travel for 6-12 months. Flights are down a significantly now, I've seen some airports list 95% reduced travel since covid. Unemployment was still relatively low after 9/11 (peaking nationally around 6%) as compared to the preliminary numbers being filed now.

Given all the factors, I would be surprised if suicide rates did not rise because of these lockdowns. There are just so many contributing factors: increased substance use, increased firearm supply, unemployment, a general lack of hope with no end date in sight, and even the physical isolation itself- for many people, Zoom or a phone call isn't a substitute for in person interaction.

You've GOT to be shitting me. I still see plenty of less-than-full shelves everywhere I go. These people at Bloomberg must be on drugs.

This thread moves significantly slower than last month since all the doom posters have left. This wasnt everything they dreamed of and they cant take the tide of public opinion changing. It's so much easier to catch up on now.

We NEED to open May 1st. Its getting to the point where Ive stopped caring all together. When I need something, I go out and get it without a second thought. Local people are ripping the security tape off playgrounds and hiking in areas the state "closed" (how the fuck you gonna close 10 acres of wilderness? Fuck off). Rural people are fishing but super pissed theyre missing the spring Turkey season. Im sure people are hunting with no tags. Of course faggy metropolitan politicans dont give a fuck about people on the outskirts who need to hunt and fish to supplement their diets.

The west coast seems close to opening. Local subreddits are seething. The Karens and Boomers want to be sealed in their homes for their own good. I still don't get why scared people can't stay home while everyone else gets on with it. Thats basically how its been here the whole time anyway.

Here in my coastal CA county, the boot remains firmly upon the people's necks.

Our utter dumbfuck of a county "medical director" STILL maintains the county will have 33,000 cases by May 15. So far we have less than 120 for a county of over 450,000 people. The "county supervisors" STILL believe this cocksucker.
Hope I hit the MegaMillions tonight, then time to escape to America. Fuck the People's Republic of Kalifornia.

This seems to be a retail / b2b supply chain issue, rather than a total supply problem. There were articles about warehouses with tons of TP stock slated for hotels and businesses that were collecting dust while Target and Kroger were empty.

Target having issues with supply? Must be a day ending in -y.

Where I am in [REDACTED] it does seem like things have got less bad. There was antibacterial handwash, fucking ginormous Toblerones, large bags of rice, bleach. All things that were sold out last time I was there.

My freezer is now stocked like Pelosi's, though I've got no ice cream because I want to maximize the number of meals I can cram into it and minimize the overhead.

The days of subsisting off instant noodles and tinned or frozen food are now gone, though I've still got a healthy stock if things go bad again.

I reckon the lockdown will lift, but I bet I'll still be queueing in a socially distanced queue for an hour for a month or two afterward. It's like we still need to take our shoes off when we fly, even though it was just one dude trying to shoe bomb a plane and he failed because he was a fucking 'tard with a 'tard's plan.

Update on my wee corner of Scotland. That’s 24 deaths on my hospitals site, which imho is good, we have still 4 wards filling up slowly. The respiratory team are bored shitless, and fighting over to do a reduced clinic lol. We have 71 CPAP machines still in the covers.
mr Grumpy is being a bit of a dick missing his work, but couldn’t coz he needs surgeryfor his left cataract, pissing me off. Commendered ma telly for breaking bad, complains it’s shite but still asks me what’s happening FML
One of the saddest things about this pandemic is that Guardian journalists are really suffering

You're as good with words as Hemingway? Are you sure about that?

I don't know how the media will survive without this guy. We'll be so much poorer as a society without shows about teenage children of the super-rich. If Hemingway were alive today he might be writing dramas like that, but people would still be talking about them a hundred years later. I bet everything this guy produced is the TV equivalent of popcorn.

Also, the self-pitying tone of this article reminds me of this

You can read the Geefe columns here. They are very funny.

oh fucking boo hoo, couldn’t he get a trust deed, that’s what me and mr grumpy did when we lost our flat and had debt. Paid it off in 3 years

Innit funny how each time some nurse, doctor, professor or something comes out saying how the government's murdering everyone and is shit at its job it's always some left wing lunatic that the BBC fails to declare the political allegiances of?
Fuck em fuck the beeb, imho I think bojo has done fucking fantastic. Sorry imma in a mood waiting to go home and get beer 🍺

Oh we haven't stopped the overhyping either, this is an ideological arms race after all, they've just gotten better at impromptu titular spawning. And god damn, by this points fuckers can turn "hi" into the god damned bible. But we ain't surrendering, damnit. And yep, the "does it work? In vitro it does!" Meme is universal.

Might be a touch of the old tism here, but do you think it'd be possible to canonize Li Wenliang as a saint of some sort?

He wasn't catholic, so no. Catholics are very strict with that. They apparently denied sainthood to a guy who was a shoe-in otherwise because when they went to move / examine the body, they discovered he'd been buried alive. Since there was the possibility he cursed God in his final breaths, sainthood was denied.

Still not seeing much about third world infections. The news in the uk is focused on trump bad, various uk feel good/stoking annoyance stories and various bits. Nothing about how this is playing out in the third world.

The lack of clarity from China continues. I was thinking today that their numbers don’t make sense. Even if we assume that they underreported vastly in Wuhan (a given) the lack of spread to the rest of China is baffling. This has hit everywhere. Even countries with great testing and quarantine are seeing cases slip through. So why isn’t Beijing or Shanghai or any other populous city in China hit badly? Do we really believe a city adjacent to Wuhan can escape while the uk gets hit?
I still think we are missing something critical about spread. All the countries that report halfway reliable data seen to have roughly similar curves, which differ between big city/rural like you’d expect. All those curves are rising rapidly, seem to be plateauing and a few tailing off. Even if you combined them do that you treated the Wuhan outbreak as one and rest of China as another it goes my look real.
I know China is lying, but I think there might be known unknowns and unknown unknowns if you get my drift. ..

That being said I'm not a doomer, but I'm also not full GO TO THE SUPERMARKET WITHOUT PROTECTION BRO LOL.

Oh. I dont wear shit, never did. Only about 15% of people wear anything here and there's less than 300 cases in the entire county, 22 specifically in my zip code. (Hint: its not NYC). The local govt already talking reopening plans. It's...over.

Im of the belief that a shit ton of the population was already exposed in January and February. Shit I was still going to the gym right up until the stay at home order in March, and I was not alone. Everyone wworking now has likely been contact. This virus is mostly asymptomatic. And we arent really testing anyway. So what are we waiting for, whats the all clear? There isnt one. We will need to move on. And yes people will die. Theyre dying every minute, thats not uncommon at all. We already stocked our hospitals. Again, what are we waiting for? A vaccine? Lmfao

Between me and the border of the next province is a 6 hour drive. I think it's 6 days travel coast to coast, and thats if you don't go over to the Maritimes. There is a lot of open space due to agriculture, ranching and Crown land. Some of our smaller towns are hemmed in by these agri lands on all sides, and quite literally have no more room to grow unless they build up.

The cities are filthy Liberal shitholes that are jam packed with all of the New Canadian Immigrants. For some reason they don't want to move out of the cities, where the general attitude is a lot more like American rednecks. We aren't ALL perfidious faggot leafs.

Dunno, my city is more right wing than me and I say nigger.

Of course I get your drift. It's those god damned alphabet pokemens! They've been protecting china! We need to mass produce polkaballs!
