I never cease to be amazed at the hubris and self-involvement of these people. We are in the middle of a pandemic, during which nearly everyone is suffering with sickness, worry, job loss, and thinly stressed resources (many all at once) and this idiot expects people to take the time to put together videos and plays and shit to make a completely insentient hunk of meat "feel love." She may as well be asking them to send birthday cards and do a birthday "drive by" for a houseplant.

I see from the mom's Facebook page that she has TEN OTHER KIDS (or maybe eight -- the wording is weird), one of whom has a "rare brain stem cancer" and was allegedly denied treatment by St. Jude's Hospital. But, oh miracle of miracles, he's been healed by the power of Jeebus! "Without any drugs but with God's natural remedies, preventions, and our faith, this year our son celebrated his 13th birthday here on earth with us, cancer free." How crazy that this sweet Christian family has had so much burden placed on their shoulders...

TLDR: Seconding that we need a Kayli thread.

IIRC this was the same family that had a newspaper report helping them beg for money, and the writer specifically mentioned that he contacted them through some kind of welfare worker, the parents were both unemployed, and all 4 or 5 kids had something wrong with them. I think the oldest had actually died of cancer.

This woman learned early on that she could get anything she wanted so long as she had a sick kid. Unless I'm thinking of the wrong con artist family, these people have made cashing disability checks a career. It's no surprise she's so demanding, she has had her hand permantly stuck out for over a decade.

I remember the case study of a boy who survived meningitis(?) posted in the Jahi/ Mama Nails thread. Autopsy showed what his brain looked like after being in a vegetative state, kept alive by a vent for over a decade, and it looked nothing like a brain. It was shriveled and calcified.

If she has any glimmer of awareness, then that expression on her face matches her feelings of absolute horror. Who would ever want to exist like that?
IF she can feel anything at all, she can never scratch an itch, blink, express any feeling, she can't even express frustration. That's hellish. And if she is not aware at all, then what is the point of keeping her alive? To satisfy mom's needs? That's selfish af.

On a related note, I once read a quiverfull fundie musing that maybe the increased odds of a baby with Downs in later life was actually a gift from God... because you’d always have that child at home with you, and would never have to face empty nest syndrome.

I have personally known several families who had a member with Down Syndrome or some other intellectual disability. That's a really terrible attitude to have! And if you know one person with Down's, you know that person. They're as different as the rest of us.

Actually when some organs are outside the body, especially the intestine, you'd think "how the hell did they fit there?" They seem ridiculously large to be cramped inside someones body. I believe the other reason they seem too large compared to the baby's body is because whatever was successfully formed of the abdominal wall just deflated without the organs inside, like a plastic bag without air/grocery would.

There is a case where a baby was born with his intestines outside of his body. But the baby wasn't as premature and it was only the intestine, not all organs that were outside of the body. The headline though.

Most babies with gastroschisis don't have a case that severe. A lot of them just have a larger-than-usual umbilical hernia, which may or may not require surgical correction.

I'm guessing that the doctor said abortion was an option, not that she SHOULD do it. That's not the doctor's decision in the end.

This is all for mom's benefit. It has absolutely nothing to do with saving Kayli, or Kayli being a fighter or survivor. Something broke in mom's brain when she was pregnant, when Kayli was born and when she tried to die the first time.
While the kid is an absolutely horrifying sight, it's the mom who's the cow. Kayli is innocent, and deserved to be allowed to pass humanely ages ago rather than used as a prop. It looks like Kayli's Krusade has destroyed the dad and the other children.

There is no reason to have forced this body to stay alive like this, it's inhumane and selfish.

Bit offtopic, but I think it's rather neat that the disorder Peter Dinklage has and thanatophoric dysplasia have mutations in the exact same gene and the only difference is likely that the protein produced is even more reactive in thanatophoric dysplasia.

I don't know about a following but I used to live in the area and she was always in the local papers bitching about the school district and state not spending enough on special needs children.
Of course she can never hold it together long enough so by the end of the article or her reeeees to the editor it would come out that the spending she wanted "for special needs kids" would only benefit Kayli.

Nevermind the fact these people live a pretty comfortable life in a very nice house and the state that is broke foots the whole bill for this child who hasn't been alive for over a decade.

Achondroplastic dwarfism, which is also what Amy Roloff and one of her children have, is caused by a single dominant gene. Thanatophoric dwarfism is usually the result of two achondroplastic dwarfs having a child and passing their genes on to the child, although it can appear spontaneously.

Most people with achondroplasia are mentally normal, and live relatively normal lives. Thanatophoric dwarfism is generally incompatible with life.

I have several relatives with special needs and they had IEPs and were in special-education programs appropriate for them, but unlike the people profiled in this thread, were actually able to benefit from them.
