Don't know if stories like this belong in this thread anymore but here is more info on impact of the 2020 Olympics delay. It's unfortunate that an event of this rare nature where hard work, endurance, and good sportsmanship which transcends national boundaries in the spirit of universal brotherhood has been reduced to arguing over who will pay for it all.

Another thing to consider is if this goes on--or we open, get a second wave and shut down again--are you better off trying to go back to your old job and/or subsist on unemployment? Or get an essential job now if you can?

Imagine 2 years from now, if we're still locked down, dependent on the govt for handouts and breadlines. The lowly Walmart shelf-stocker or delivery driver will be an Elite Citizen, with first pick of food and supplies for themselves, their family and friends. They will also be one of the few with a precious letter allowing them some freedom of movement.

You know last year there was a huge push for the concept of climate change and reducing CO2 emissions globally and what do you know a year later emissions are at a record low to the point where the oil historically crashed. Anyone think this could have been a plan to reduce the global CO2? Hype up a relatively mild virus to the status of death plague to keep the carbon emissions in check? TBH it seems like an effective way to do it I can't really think of any other scenario that would work as well as hyping up a reletivley mild virus to stifle global CO2 emissions. Ask yourself a year ago if cutting CO2 worldwide would be possible and I bet many of you would say no it wouldn't be possible yet here we are. Just a crackpot theory of mine.

I have wondered what makes it manifest as a mild or annoying cold in some and and an all hands on deck emergency in others.

I do t think anyone knows. Asymptomatic carriers are a thing for a lot of pathogens both bacterial and viral. Flu for example also has asymptomatic carriers. It’s not quite the same as being resistant to something - these people are infected and they are shedding virus. I’m not sure if anyone has quantified how much virus asymptomatic people shed with corona? With flu it varies depending on strain. Sometimes it’s not much different to those with a visible infection and other times it’s orders of magnitude lower.
Then there’s the strain you get - not all strains are any different in effects but some may be. Then viral load - it does seem that the initial amount you’re exposed to has an effect. Then what you have antibodies to from previous infections. Your individual genetics - some alleles will predispose to certain things and others protect. Your age and your general health, levels of inflammation, your sex, all sorts of stuff.
There are a lot of factors and they will all interact - once you have more than a few it becomes a bit of a three body problem and very complex.

I suspect there’s going to be more money for researching it in the next few years...

The problem with it being any kind of conspiracy is you'd need both sides to be on board. That Pelosi, AOC and the TDS crowd to work hand in hand with Trump and cover for each other on the worst crime in history that they are all complicit on. And that's just the US. Iran, North Korea, Russia, every small African nation, the UN, the WHO, the first world western nations--and every political faction in power in those nations and organizations--would have to work togther and keep quiet.

The funny thing is most of the people in the risk groups don't even work anyway. You could order them to stay home and it wouldn't disrupt their lives that much. You could even give the few who still work in their 60s a pass to miss work.
