The real business the ranch does is growing and selling weed, and the weed they get is probably from their own stock. I think that the fact he went to an "alternative school for at risk youth" helps explain that. Probably got bullied and ended up fighting a bunch as a kid, joined the army and structure balanced things out but after leaving the military it was a slippery slope to the bottom.
