Anecdotal central Florida observations this week:

The olds be wildin’, I would say a 90% reduction in observed mask use amongst the elderly. They are also swarming restaurants. I thought it was just Mother’s Day traffic last weekend but nope, it continues apace.

The black olds in particular...I don’t think I saw a single black man wearing a mask all week. And previously I thought black people were doing so more than white people. Even a black guy working at Publix was walking around without his mask doing his own shopping, I guess he got off his shift and they couldn’t force him to wear it.

Swing State (Pennsylvania) and people are getting fed up.

Well in that case may I suggest a nice trip to the Wisconsin Dells! Waterpark Capitol of the World! Vacation packages are available at reasonable, Midwestern rates, and the multitude of things to do vastly outperforms anything Georgia has. Come ride some ducks and give us that sweet, sweet early reopened tourist destination money! Suck it Branson!

In four days (or maybe less) I'm gonna know if Charlie Baker decides to move the goalposts on reopening the MA economy. I think people here are indeed getting fed up despite how much compliance with mask-wearing in stores is going on (but not nearly as much for those just having a walk outside.)

I will be genuinely surprised if they do start reopening. But hell, I wouldn't bat an eye either if we pop off with another Boston Tea Party/Massacre if they don't.

Elder care in the Uk has been run down and privatised too much with too few controls. People are moaning on about the government not helping but most of these homes are privately owned and privately run. There are a very small minority of homes run by people who genuinely care and provide a decent living environment. The rest are owned by private concerns (including I’m sorry to say an awful lot of doctors) and staffed by the absolute minimum of qualified staff assisted by larger but still insufficient numbers of minimum wage carers who are treated poorly, paid poorly and have no job security.
You can tell when you walk through the door if it’s a good home or a bad one by the smell. They’re mainly hideous places. Fucking shoot me before I get to that point.
It was a disaster waiting to happen. There needs to be a hard look at how we provide elderly care, both at the personal care level and the nursing care level. Both are horribly underfunded.

The elderly aren’t disposable. We could have had enhanced PPE, enhanced hygiene, staff testing, resident testing. We could have zoned off homes to separate infected and not, and we could have prevented an awful lot of those deaths while still keeping everything else open. As it is we’ve locked down, fucked the economy sideways and still let the grim reaper run amok in the nursing homes.
Hmmm. How to speak of Geriatric/ElderCare without PL...

Let's just say, I have a friend who has worked in Elder Care for 20 years, first as a Delegated RN who later went on to Supervisory Duties, working for a Home Care Agency, supervising up to 70 clients and up to 100 caregivers.

If it can at all be avoided, don't put your elders in a care home. Studies have shown the best and most cost effective option is to allow them to stay in their own homes, with support. As their needs become greater, increase the amount of care. Use Home Care Agencies, Palliative Care and Hospice Agencies as the needs progress. All of this support costs way less than the amount of money that warehousing Gramma would cost.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

I'm going to second this. At the very least, make sure they have a do not resuscitate note or some other provision against absurd health treatments. Because care homes will give expensive life-extending care to completely mentally and physically impaired elders simply to keep extracting money rather than to preserve their dignity or quality of life like hospice care would.

But guys, I've been assured by Reddit and Facebook that the people getting fed up with quarantine are just a vocal minority of armed far-right nationalists who only want to open up businesses to oppress people of color! Or something.

Dude. I'm left wing and defended our quarantine, and even I am starting to get fed up enough that if we weren't in the middle of exam season and cadiz weren't in the middle of the storm of the fucking century I might just risk the fine and go revisit our historic sites and monuments the whole day. Or hell I want so badly to go to the nature reserve at the other side of cortadura. Just... After this much locking up I NEED some real freedom. Not just this exercise shit I need actual fucking freedom.

Needless to say. I'm pretty fucking sure if even my geeky ass which was used to being home most of the day before and has been getting out to go help my contacts is now at the point where it's taking winds fast enough to tear the trees from their roots and the threat of academic failure just to convince me to stay home, most are getting real fucking tired of this shit. I'd say Samchez should count his lucky stars that he can't go petty hitler even if he wants to and everyone knows congress is about to kick the lockdowns to the curb like it or not. Because this needs to fucking end already before people do something real fucking stupid. Specially the ones that now depend on the NGOs for food. I bet they're starting to get real fucking pissy.

This ain't no vocal minority. I know you meant it as sarcasm, so I'm kinda sorry for the sperg. But... I just wanna clarify for anyone still wondering. And also I need to sperg. I can't fucking take this anymore. Even on prior exam seasons at least I usually took some nightly walks. Even if I hadn't caught corona, I would've stoped caring so hard by now. I'm looking through the fucking window at a tree that's literally been thrown half way through the street and I'm still wondering if I'mma get out tonight anyway. This ends here. If the politicians don't end it the peaceful way, well I'll tell ehatever cop catches me that I just don't care about the fines anymore and he's free to hand me one. But I doubt most will be as peaceful.

And do take into account I'm talking about spain. Where most know at the very least Fernando Simon has been 100% making everything better since before day 1 and our idiots in charge, at least on the left, have tried their hardest to do the best they could, despite their outrageous fuckups. And where most have cooperated unflinchingly and morale has been kept as high as possible most of the time through memes, help groups, online assistance, help phones, NGOs, etc. Hell publicly I haven't told anyone but you how much of a toll it's taking on me. And most of my loved ones have only dared tell me about their issues in private. Because we all understand the importance of keeping others as happy as we can and helping as much as we can. So I can only imagine what America, which has seen backlash since day 1, had far less of a reason to open to begin with, is not seeing the lockdowns lift but instead extended, is suffering way harder economical breakdowns, and does not have even a tenth of our support network will wind up going through. There will be no 2nd wave lockdowns because whoever has the balls to try will be found hanging from the capital building quartered and brutalized. People just can't take round 2 of this shit.

I'm sorry. Usually I at least try to account for my bias. I know this is the direct opposite of that. But fuck me. Fuck this god damned lockdown. Until today honestly I've had some doubts but I've tried to stay objective. I can't do that anymore. This is fucking me up. I reached my limit. And looking at my social groups I'm far from the only one near their breaking point. I've had to console some of my loved ones these days, some started having psychological side effects the first week. And journalists are far from helping with their "just blame it all on people not being responsible and constantly shame them" strategy. I keep being reminded of that fat autist that wound up going out half naked with two katanas screaming he was god and wondering how much more will it take before we see more people have similar mental breakdowns.

Wisconsin, USA

Wisconsin is open for business, by state supreme court decree, 4-3.

It remains to be seen whether the Governor and legislature will compromise on any replacement shutdown orders/ reopening plan.

A friend said he's never heard of AdultTime. He says it's Pornhub for him. "Don't cost nothing." A wise consumer, I'd say.

Check this bitch out. If anyone on God's green earth needs firing, she is it. Utterly disgusting.

Even though the Democrats would reject it for not helping illegals, NEETS, and anyone else not working, I could see President Trump wanting to provide $1k to $2k monthly over the next six months for anyone working during the first quarter of 2020. For employees, this is easily verified through state unemployment tax reports. Gig workers and other self-employed folks would likely have bank records or receipts verifying business activity during the first quarter. I could also see an exception carved out for anyone already collecting unemployment during the first quarter since one has to have worked prior to collecting it.

Sure, the Dems would hate this version of TrumpBux. At the same time, Trump could tout himself helping the working-class remain whole during the indefinitely lock-downs while taking a swipe at the Democrats for: (1) Spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt with indefinite restrictions in the areas the govern, and (2) Wanting tax dollars to support illegals and those NEETS able to work but unwilling to do so.

Even if the above idea is unlikely in today's hyper-partisan environment, I still won't put it past Trump to consider doing something that provides additional money to people whose earnings have been impacted by the lockdowns and find a way to do it that garners just enough bipartisan support that the Democrats don't necessarily love it, but still pass it narrowly because their party being seen as anti-worker during an election year would be bad optics.

The way I see it, the Dem's dream version of this is providing $1k to $2k monthly to everyone under a certain wage limit living in the US starting in 2020, including (especially) illegals and temporary residents who just happen to be living here for a short time, the Republican's dream version would be to provide $1k to $2k monthly to everyone under a certain wage limit who were working before the lockdowns started (and obviously are legal citizens), including small business owners and self employed people.

Obviously the Republicans will recoil and hiss from the Dem's proposal like it's made of acid, and the Dem's will do the same from the Republican's proposal, because the right would be horrified at the concept of pumping out billions to illegals, and the left would be horrified at the concept of not sending out money to those who were already unemployed before the economic drop. In the end, I think they'll have to find a middle ground along the lines of what we got with the last stimulus check, where you have to have filed a tax return in the past two years and not yourself be a dependent. Basically, both sides have their hands tied by the fact that the population as a whole wants that money and it's election year.

It would be interesting to see if Trump can shift it so that those employed at the start of 2020 get more while those unemployed get less, but I see anything where he tries to cut out or lessen benefits for the unemployed as being vulnerable to a negative spin by the media and DNC regardless of whether it's fully justified that he would.

Here's an idea for a middleground: Make fucking IDs mandatory already. Et fucking voila. Now all you need to do is link unemployment/UBI with citizenship and you don't have to worry so much about the fucking illegals comiting even more fiscal fraud. And as a side effect if you also use it for anti-voting-fraud you also stop having to worry about that shit too! Not that fucking hard to do. It's literally what everyone else is doing! I would have trouble believing a country can just trip itself over its own legislation repeatedly by adding so much convoluted shit to simple paperwork, except that this is america we're talking about. And if there's one thing you mofos are good at it's complicating basic shit, see the imperial system for reference. No I'm not gonna stop poking at that mess and yes I'm definitelly butthurt about it. I just... It astounds me how much your bureaucracy manages to stab itself. I mean, over here the UBI stuff was considered, and apparently approved so it is coming, and I still have no fucking clue how the fuck do they think this won't tank the economy, though I guess since we're spain, well you know, you can't kill what's already dead, so we might as well try. But the one thing I did not expect having to worry about is "but how do we keep illegals from accessing it without keeping lower classes out too?"... Citizen. Fucking. Registry. Every country has it. Use it. That's literally what it was made for!

I third this. At the very least, fill out a DNR if that is your wish. Even better is an Advanced Medical Directive and a Medical Power of Attorney. Don't wait until you are an old fuck to do it.

Unless your wishes are clear, you will be resuscitated and kept on artificial life support, in most circumstances. If your body being kept alive, while your brain is gone, is abhorrent to you, make your choice known. This is not just for old folks. Ask Terri Schiavo...oh wait, you can't ask her...she is dead...after being kept alive for 15 years, while some court decided whether to pull the plug or not.

Infection Fatality Rate musings.

When this all kicked off back in February, due to this thread and the blurry bits of info coming out of China I was worried that there might be an overall IFR of 2 or 3% . That is 2 to 3% evenly across the whole population , and young people had no special immunity. Based on that, I was quite happy for governments to take this seriously, and I did some prepping myself.

Now, I been trying to find decent data, but what it looks like is that the IFR is 0.1% to 0.4% , and it is pretty much exclusively killing the old and sick.
So if a 1000 people chosen at random catch this, then 1 to 4 of the oldest and sickest of that group will die. Which is bad for them, but not a major planet fucker.

Trying to find articles that clearly express this is hard. This is good, but technical. It's actual science that is honest about the uncertainties.

Taking account of historical experience, trends in the data, increased number of infections in the population at largest, and potential impact of misclassification of deaths gives a presumed estimate for the COVID-19 IFR somewhere between 0.1% and 0.41%.*

A single estimate of IFR across all age groups is therefore unhelpful, particularly given the significant changes in risk of death with age

Moratality Rate is also interesting , basically IFR but divided by infection rate .
In the UK, there are about 8.75 million people above the age of 70. ONS . archive

If about 27000 people aged > 70 have died so far , that puts the mortality rate at 0.3% FOR THE OVER SEVENTIES. I.e. bugger all in the grand scheme of things.

Anybody got anything good to add?

TL : DR
I once was a partial doomer based on the initial impressions. Now I'm 95% Flu Bro.

I really can't stand NextDoor, wherein there are nanny-staters who state "rules are rules," and can't abide the fact that two mutually-consenting parties might agree to a business transaction in the form of a haircut, taking place in someone's home. These people label anyone consenting to such a transaction as "far-right." Apparently, people don't understand how a haircut can help job interviews, and how some people can't give themselves haircuts without butchering their hair. Coincidentally, I found one of these specimens begging for a building contractor during the "stay-at-home" order.

I enjoy the hypocrisy immensely.

LMAO (wouldn't a furry suit actually protect you?):

Amazon won't sell N95 masks but will sell N95 fursuits. When asked Jeff Bezos just shouted "YIFF! YIFF!" and then laughed so hard he wet his N95 diapers.

Also here's the latest Dr. Campbell video. Presented in 1990s retrochic 240p to get under the 100MB upload limit.
