A major problem with persona-based comedy is if you adopt this ironic or semi-ironic persona and then turn out actually to be that guy, or at least the cringy parts of that guy. That’s personally why I enjoy Dick, he’s like a caricature of those 80’s hair bands that wrote about how great drugs and sex are, and watching him rage at stupid stuff played up against the straight man Sean and Asterios could be pretty funny. I never took him seriously, like his advice would be genuinely helpful. I thought that was why most people liked him, but looking at the reaction to this whole ordeal makes me think otherwise.
