Trump HAS SIGNED Executive Order after Twitter fact-checks his tweet - How fucked are social media corporations for fucking with the First Amendment?

Is this a win for Freedom of Speech?

Still pretty hacky to do it via Executive Order, but part of a long-running trend, sadly.
He almost has to doesn't he? Wouldn't dems and never-trumpers block him at every turn if he did it any other way?

So somewhere on the backend there's a never ending list of autocorrect typos?

it could very well screw everyone over long-term; admittedly I hadn't even considered that, as I was more thinking short-term.
Does the long term really matter at this point? There's been a decade or more of the same few tech companies dominating everything on the internet, and lefty entryism poisoning the few things that they didn't control. That's not going to change just staying the course.

ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS REPEAL THE PATRIOT ACT

REPEAL THE PATRIOT ACT AND FORCE BANKS AND PAYMENT NETWORKS TO BE IMPARTIAL

ALL HE HAD TO FUCKING DO WAS THAT AND HIS PRESIDENCY WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST IN THE LAST 100 YEARS

Dude, we're talking about one of the most petulant and whiny, narcissistic men that have ever held power in the West. He has no appreciation of civics or even what the people want. His "advisors" are fucking Fox and Friends (until they pissed him off by not rubbing his ass). It doesn't matter if you're a edgelord anime fascist or a woke neutered multigendered freak (a.k.a, a liberal) I think we can all agree that Trump is remarkably unintelligent and motivated entirely by building up a personal legacy. Everything he does is either in self-aggrandizement or a petty attack against an opponent. He's not even smart enough to really disguise ir or at least wait a little while before he retaliates. Dude doesn't so much want money as he wants glory. He wants his name in the history books. He wants everyone chanting his name.

He could do that easily but he's so stupid and out of touch and seeking to impress and be liked by the people around him--the swamp, which he never drained, just replaced with a new swamp--that he would or could never do that. And who REALLY cares about the PATRIOT act anymore? Liberals? When have they brought that up? They're too busy obsessing about trannies and shit and the PATRIOT act has nothing to say about intersectional politics. Conservatives? Conservatives have always had a love-hate relationship with the state, using revolutionary war-era rhetoric while cherishing the notion of rebellion, all the while basically worshiping the Big Man In Charge.

He doesn't want to work with Congress to pass new legislation, because that takes away from his own glory. Hell, he needed to fucking send out a letter glorifying himself to the nation when the stimulus checks went out.

We're dealing with a man that is pathologically retarded and narcissistic. This man can't deviate from anything other than thinking about the 1950s steel industry. Never once outside of his positions on immigration and trade has he ever remained consistent ideologically. I guarantee you he doesn't really understand what the PATRIOT act does, why he should repeal it, and why he should personally even give a shit.

Yeah but if he did that all his mates at the banks would have to be impartial.
So many conservative voters fail to understand this. GOP want money, anything that gets in the way is unimportant. Impartiality isnt going to exist in the party of greedy multi billionaires.
And why would he ever repeal the Patriot Act. GOP is the party of good patriots, they wouldn't want less surveillance.

Because Fox News is literally a publisher, not a platform. Are you under the impression Twitter and Facebook are news organizations, or just too ignorant to perceive the difference amid the all-important culture war?
Misinformation is misinformation. It doesn't matter where it comes from. The most laughable thing about this entire tantrum is that he thinks that THIS is the most important thing going on in the US right now.

We're dealing with a man that is pathologically exceptional and narcissistic. This man can't deviate from anything other than thinking about the 1950s steel industry. Never once outside of his positions on immigration and trade has he ever remained consistent ideologically. Just look at the civil war. The confederates ended up using more federal power than the north ever did because people werent doing what they wanted. Yet they were the country of states rights. This mentality never left the American conservative mindset. Hell the second reconstruction started dixiecrats started bitching about the north "Intervening".

What a hilariously reductionist take, if only for assuming there's some universal standard for truth rendering "misinformation is misinformation" anything but a meaningless platitude.
The argument was over Big Tech media companies enjoying the legal protection from being a platform despite acting like left-wing publishers. Whining about right-wing outfits no one disputes are publishers, and who don't enjoy any of those legal protections, outs you as a culture war autist who doesn't know what he's even discussing.

Find me some MAGABoomer who managed to successfully sue Fox News to re-open their comment section in the same fashion as this pedo managed to get the Supreme Court to un-do his facebook ban and you might have an iota of a point, but as it stands Fox News is neither legally shielded as a platform under 203(c) nor are they masquerading as one.

HOT TAKE: This is okay. The liberal media sites didn't do anything about the lies spread by places like CNN, and didn't have to do shit against Trump. What goes around comes around.
so you think the right wing will be in charge forever?
so you think "liberals" will not use this law, even harder, the moment they get the reins?

this is why we don't pass this kind of law. either side can use it to fuck with us.

edit; it's hardly censorship if people can still see exactly what was said, eh?

Point of clarification, this is an Executive Order and not a law.

Really it's all been downhill since that fucking dancing baby gif.
Ally McBeal ruined everything.

So are we going to have to dust off all those old AOL trial disks from the 90s?

Time to fire up my pr0gz and punt the shit out of you faggot
I think I am okay with the wholesale destruction of the internet.

Yeah. This feels right. All of this is a huge mistake.

No, I want to see web 2.0 destroyed as much as anyone else here. I think most of us on the farms are pretty disgruntled with how the internet has turned out. In fact, I think this is one of the last bastions of web 1.0 mentality, here. Not even very many forums left on the internet. Even if we don't get web 1.0 back (we never will, obviously) I'd rather just see it all taken out or rendered mostly unusable for social media since social media has only had a toxic effect on humanity. One only needs to go on a dating website to see what it's done to people.

This is it, this is the whole crux of the deal, Trump seat is temporary, its meant to be, any deviation from that would violate one of the most fundamental core concepts of the USA and while assuming Trump uses this exclusively in a proper non damaging way it doesnt guarantee the next one, nor the next one after that, its a genuine slipery slope that never ends until it ends by nuclear trainwreck

Realistically, was an ego maniac like Trump ever going to repeal the patriot act?

His election platform never even hinted at doing so, unlike Obama.

He was never going to be the guy to do that. Since the Dems agreed to expand Trump's powers(under the act), they don't seem to have a problem with it either...

It's a shit sandwich with both parties forcing us to eat it...

The most worrying thing about all of this, at least on the surface, is that it's reception thus far serves as yet more confirmation of the fact that Trump enjoys a worrying degree of unconditional support among his base, and we have ample evidence of that in this thread.

This executive order won't actually do anything it's supporters are saying it will do. If anything, it will backfire, and force platforms to be more heavy-handed in deleting material entirely in order to remove themselves from the ramifications of "editing content" being redefined as "unlawful tampering".

"Oh, you posted this politically incorrect opinion on Twitter? Well, sorry, but that's spam, and we've had to remove your entire account just to be safe."
To pretend that this won't backfire in other ways is also deeply naive, because the ramifications of this change will extend beyond Trump and his administration. If you think that this won't potentially effect you someday, you're a fool.

There's no law being passed. It's an executive order, and all it does is ask two separate federal departments to either present updated policies to the public or square twitter's behavior with an existing Supreme Court decision. And I guess withholds federal ad money from social media companies under certain conditions. We have no idea the scope or degree of impact that's even happening until the FCC and FTC respectively pipe up. They have a month or so, barring him getting distracted.

People of either political stripe are acting like Trump signed off on a letter saying "twitter can't ban rightoids anymore and i'll bully them for doing it in the first place" when that's nowhere near close to what happened in reality. He got ticked off b/c Twitter marked a tweet of his as lying and signed some boilerplate EO asking for a couple meetings on the issue before anything material even begins to get done. Read the fucking order. It's not even that dense of legalese.
