Good, repeal it. The internet needs to start from scratch.
I don't know why retards think that it would be like a "reset" button, the amount of people in this thread that lack basic understanding of 230 is is fucking disappointing despite them effectively being helped by it's protections daily.

Yes, and we have the biggest saber-rattler in the last fifty years in the White House. I agree with you that 230 is integral, but acting as though it's fait accompli when it's Trump of all people who's saying it is ignoring four previous years of bloviating. He's shot his mouth off about massive changes in foreign policy and nothing has come of it.

I don't disagree that even threatening to play with the law over a tantrum with social media elites is a wise thing to do but I also don't think it's tempting fate to see it as only that at this point.
This time may be different. While Silicon Valley are a big lobby group, there are other lobby groups that would welcome section 230 going.

He won't be able to do it with an executive order, but am I wrong in thinking that there would be support from both left and right for getting rid of it?

Also what fit of madness made Jack Dorsey not decide to not only fact check a statement from the US President, but to do it using a pretty suspect source. If he had just deleted it, he could have claimed it violated TOS. What he did was a blatant editorial act.

Dorsey is one of the most over rated figures in tech, he was first to market with a micro blogging site. All he had to do was sit back and watch the money roll in. Instead he does this.

So, can we start the slave trade again? Can we start lynching any random person on the street? Can I have my own personal pet Mexican right by my side? CAN WE LEGALIZE THE PURGE SO I CAN RAPE WOMYN?

Clown World has reached its peak and sometimes you just can't take shit anymore. No more shitposting = no more life for Channers like me.

Listen, while @Null is indeed a lolcow, he is right on this.

Sec. 230 of the CDA is essential for the survival of this site and other sites that are designed to do more than discuss retards who shit their pants on a daily basis. I think he is at the brink of chimping out right now, but sometimes a chimpout is warranted. In this case, we have the president, whose voice does hold sway and can influence congress to act, attacking a law which protects this site from idiots being able to get their idiocy covered up. No one cares about the Kiwi Farms, and this is more about Trump acting like a petulant child, but honestly, you really shouldn't expect much more from him, and for congress, a body that really doesn't seem to value American civil liberties all that much, I could totally see them acting on this if Trump keeps billowing.

As an aside, I do have to admit that I find it rather hilarious that Trump is doing all this. He is switching accounts, trying to get around moderation. This is the kind of stuff you usually see lolcows do.

We have a thread on Adam Sandler, personally, I feel we should have a thread on Donald Trump as well. I would be interested in seeing some of the funny shit that would come from that.

Losing Sec. 230 would indeed end this website, it would mean @Null is liable for all the nasty shit you faggots post. No one could keep this place open for more than a few weeks under those circumstances.
dude total fucking lolcow CHIMPOUT move when somebody gets mad about their livelihood and passion being damaged by a misinformed president revoking an important law...

I think null dicksucking is cringey but what's even cringier is how people on this website will call each other laugh out loud cows while posting with anime avatars on a website designed to deeply analyze the psyche and everyday life of a D-list internet celebrity that hasn't been relevant since like 2014.

Everyone on this website (including myself) is a deranged fucking weirdo who I'm sure has a long history of embarrassing mishaps. Trying to act like an internet chad on kiwifarms is like trying to be the coolest kid in sped class. We're all mentally retarded at the end of the day.

From what I've read, I don't think it's going to change much in the short or even medium term. All he asked is that the FCC in look into how the law is interpreted; for it to be abolished totally would require Congress to do something, which as in all thing I don't they are inclined to do.

And let's be frank - this a knee-jerk reaction to Twitter fact-checking and blocking his Tweets; and probably a ploy to destract the media from his shit coronavirus response and the shit economy that has followed, resulting a not-unsurmountable but steady lead for Joe Biden.

Long term, however ... I dunno. Both sides of aside seem to be growing tired of Silicon Valley and its antics, and are more willing to put under their watchful eye. Apparently Joe Biden has also said he wanted get rid of §230, which I think is far more serious than anything Trump says or does.

My god dude Trump in your head. :(

If he touches Section 230 no one will remember him for that. It's a huge issue for you because this is your life and job but no one will give a shit about it.:(
Another thing to consider: if @Null is responding this way to the Tweets, how are the people at Google / Twitter / Facebook reacting?

Google maintains an office at 25 Mass Ave. It does 2 things: provides training for people looking to be "informed" about high tech issues, and serve as a hub for tech lobbyists.

It's an expression of their soft power, they seek influence at the highest levels. The offices are physically located close to Congress and SCOTUS. When someone is considering a complex technical question related to legislation, it's one of the first places they might call to get an opinion. They want to be in the middle of conversations about the future of the Internet.

The EO bascially says the administration is now focused on enforcement of 230. If it is determined that they have failed to meet the definition of online publisher, the consequences for these companies is severe.

On the one hand, the first day, there will be several thousand lawsuits against each. There's no way to really prepare for that, people have been documenting their actions for years and the cost just to respond could be staggering even to these tech giants. We live in a world where people can fund other people's lawsuits, and Google et al have enemies. There would be strategic litigation coming from all sides designed to bankrupt them, this is something they want to avoid at all costs.

On the other hand, they would need to re-engineer parts of their services and this could cause significant disruptions to their ability to keep users interacting with them online. The stock price of Facebook, for example, is closely related to the amount of time people spend on the site each day. If they lose a couple minutes average time on site that costs them Billions. Their entire business model is built off the idea they are just slightly better than the alternatives, and losing that could be an unavoidable consequence of a change in designation.

What these Repeal tweets should have everyone in these companies thinking: for all we have invested in influence, we could be losing it to someone who can't be bought. While I'm sure the initial reaction is Fuck Trump, I'm certain more sober thinkers are doing a cost / benefit analysis and considering their interests. Sleep will be lost this weekend.

Then we're fucked.

How is that even working when they're simultaneously asking people to mask up?

Do companies and the government really need reasonable excuses to release more technology to gather more information about you?

CoronaChan is just an easy thing to point at for people going "See, we absolutely NEED things like this for YOUR safety"

That is one of the more bizarre things about all of this. Many groups want the protections it offers since it protects them from the legal liability of what their users do, but at the same time want it repealed so that they can get rid of "wrong think" speech on the internet. Those in power are pulling on both sides of the rope and have been for several years now, well before Trump. It's turning in to a fucking whirlwind.
