I haven't burned anything down, why should I be under threat of 'stay inside or die'? No one in my city has even so much as protested, much less looted and rioted, why should they all be threatened? The people who 'did nothing wrong' I'm talking about is the 99% of the country and minimum 70% of the population of any part of the country that's not even involved. I'm not making a differentiation between rioters and protestors, I'm making a differentiation between rioters and normal people not even involved in the situation at all. Curfews don't just magically only apply to wrongdoers, curfews make 'anyone who is outside past this time' into 'wrongdoers'. I, or anyone else, should not be told "I'm sorry, but you just can't go outside after seven because there are people outside who are committing crimes." No one should need to excuse or justify why they want to go outside at any time. It's their right to go out anywhere, anywhen. Deal with criminals, not innocent citizens. You can tell the difference by the fact that the former are violently attacking people, burning down businesses, and stealing things in plain view, and the latter are just trying to go about their daily business without getting beaten or shot. This only gets complex when there's people attacking rioters to try to do justice themselves, but that's still a tiny percentage of the population to be dealt with individually, not with sweeping limitations of all our liberties.

You'd have more violence erupt without law and order, and out of the anarchy you would essentially have the emergence of a feudal style policing system whereby either those militia's or gangs would control everything, and justifiably be able to kill anyone who got in their way, deservedly or otherwise.

It's worth noting that it was the SPD-majority government who sent in the Freikorps to crush the Spartacists. The Communists held it against them even during the rise of the (then-minority) Nazi party.

If the Communists (as in the political party that was voted into the Reichstag) weren't so determined on both destroying the system and sticking it to the SPD, they had a legitimate chance at stopping the Nazis.
