They have absolutely no idea how much land it takes to feed a city. Even with modern agriculture, its huge. Also, good luck waiting for the couple of months. Also what crops are you going to grow? How are you going to irrigate it?
Also, its city soil. The amount of toxins and pollutants in it are tremendous. That will all be absorbed by vegetables. Also what are you going to do for protein? I doubt the local cholos will lend you their chickens for their cock fighting.

I'd actually like to point out no commune in the US has ever succeeded. The Amish are the exception because they're not really a commune, they're a society with a strict and rigid belief system united under religion. Its the only one that comes to mind that's succeeded. Maybe if you count Hasidics. But those are both based on VERY strict religious coda. There's not much wiggle room there over any argument.
The only way these things succeed are extremely strict religious ideology. I can think of no secular commune that has ever worked for any period of time.
