I believe a democratic vote would be the best course of action, instead of the local politicians choosing the outcome themselves with no input. However I am incredibly against the idea of iconoclasm and believe that destruction should be a last ditch option. Instead I believe that an auction or storage somewhere or being kept in a museum is a better option. They are a part of American history, American culture and southern pride. Some of them are a symbol of unity and the mending of the union in good faith. We too readily throw away our history and our culture nowadays, in a time where we need to look to and hold onto all of our cultural heritage we can. Besides, if you let them people will and have come up with justification for destroying the Washington monument, or statues of Lincoln or Gandhi for Christ's sake.

Auctions would be a great idea. I doubt museums want a billion generic statues they have no space for.

It's a multitude of factors, imo. You have the underlying narrative of the past decade of cops basically existing solely to terrorize black people (and enough cases of bad cops walking on at best, really controversial cases to feed it), a lot of pent-up anger from lockdown, you had the media aggressively pushing the Breonna Taylor and Arbery case in a very short timeframe as well as getting people worked up into a frenzy about how coronavirus was killing blacks left and right and how Trump was doing nothing to stop it and then you had the absolutely terrible optics of the video of Floyd and Chauvin itself spurring the rapid outrage cycle into overdrive. That's not even getting into the likelihood of outside groups like China or the DNC having an interest in fueling the fire of the 'protests' for their own gains. It's just a perfect storm and this was probably the best catalyst for it short of a cop actually executing a unarmed black man on camera like in pic related (not in the BLM sense of literally every black man that gets shot by the police was executed).

True, in my head they'd either spread them out over a few museums across the south, or have a C. S. A. museum dedicated to housing all pieces without a place. Auctions seem more viable and they could even donate the proceeds to charities or 'community outreach' locally. Or even some mix of both options, like having the museum and it gets a Robert E. Lee but the others go to auction. A pipe dream seeing as I already know what's going to happen, but a Texas boy can dream.
