Is there some detail I'm missing here? Clearing the protest out by military force for a photo-op seems rather questionable, and enabled the media to kneecap the reassurance gained from it. Would the country really have spiralled into irrevocable chaos if it weren't for that one symbolic picture of Trump standing by the damaged church with Bible in hand, as if to say " I'm here to hold things together in these dark times" ? I guess it works in a "Freikorps voran-die Grenze Brennt! Fur eine zerbrochene Welt" kind of way.

People were practically begging Trump to make a speech of some sort to say things would be alright and the attempt at burning down the church was deranged. Plus there were already plans to clear out the area so Trump wasn’t clearing the area for himself.

The media just convinced people that the gesture was meaningless by calling it a photo op, even tho most any public appearance by a politician could be considered a photo op. Alternative would be sitting back after the place was cleared and continuing to make statements from the White House that get ignored unless they’re tweets.

Any speech Trump gave would have been called a racist call to violence, and whatever location he chose to give it in would have been labeled an empty and meaningless gesture, no matter what. This is just the basic rules under which mass media now operates. Anything Trump says is always a racist (or sexist, or homophobic) call to violence, and every move he makes is an empty and meaningless gesture. It's really going to ramp up until his rallies start back up. They're deliberately trying to force Trump to cancel campaign rallies through astro-turfing a public outcry against them. I would imagine most new agencies outside the US look to American news organizations like CNN, New York Times, and Washington Post as unbiased news sources to help shape how they'd see American politics. Wouldn't be surprised if the fact the US has such weak libel laws was completely unknown to people in Europe and how it allows for a lot of false or intensely misleading reporting.
