I think it's a mix of both, in recent years it's way more urban than suburban,
There is an extreme disdain for rural living since a lot of the big tech groups are in left-wing West Coast major metropolises like San Francisco and Seattle and for the guys like Bob Chipman, they view rural living as inherently reactionary and backwards.
Honestly, the woke thinking has an extreme disdain for country life because the Bible Belt of their childhood nemesis was comprised of primarily rural or smaller-scale suburban states in the South and Lower Midwest.
Also, consider the fact that a lot of major colleges are either in large cities or in smaller cities that are more or less oversized liberal suburbs, and SJW culture helped spread through colleges and universities.
Punk rock was also seen as a stereotypical "urban" genre in the sense that it was supposed to be for urban whites what hip-hop was for inner-city blacks in the 70's and 80's, and the big punk meccas were major cities like London, New York City, Seattle, the Twin Cities, Portland, and Los Angeles*.
This part seems inconsequential until you realize that a lot of woke SJW culture and fashion seem like a weird Millennial/Early Zoomer adaptation or affectation of punk culture, especially as it drifted further away from the hipsters of the early 2010's.
Antifa got its start in the punk scene of the 1980's, at least in North America**.
*-Ironically, the LA/SoCal punk scene eventually trended rightward because of Los Angeles's gang politics being extremely race-driven even back then.
**-European Antifa began with labor unions in the 60's and 70's, and trying to claim direct lineage to the Weimar leftist paramilitaries is very much a false history
TL;DR-Woke culture is very much a product of the coastal cities and underpinned by Big Tech and academia being centered in or near the urban centers, and the hatred for rural and smaller suburban America is also rooted in the "Fuck You, Dad!" core ethos of SJW's.
