Another thing, isn't it funny how they demand to be respected but always talk down to or about Christians? It's never Judaism or Islam it's always Christians. Why? Witch trials stopped centuries ago.
Well it might be because they see Judaism and Islam as fellow minorities "oppressed" by Christianity. In the case of Judaism though it might also be due to the fact that they don't practice active conversion. Its not necessarily as popular in Christianity as it once was but you still see groups attempting to get you to convert and so a lot of un-religious people see Christianity as a little more overbearing. The reason they don't see Islam in the same light is that most westernized Muslims they interact with are way more liberal than their Middle Eastern counterparts and don't see the point of conversion.
What is it with Gen X/Millenial women and their attraction to witchcraft/neopagan shit? I've seen a lot of it on social media, usually just reposts of moonbatt-tier "magic" or "witchcraft" related aphorisms, but still. It's especially odd when they're concurrently posting lots of stuff related to church activities. I don't know if you read Exodus, Melissa, but God- he ain't so hot on witches.
Although I guess amidst all the metaphorical witch hunting going on, it's amusing that "real" witches self identify.
There was a lot of media in the late 90s and early 00s with young witches. Sabrina the teenage witch, Buffy, Charmed, The Craft. They created this cultural image of young, cool girls with special powers. Sailor Moon gets lumped in too kinda. It's a cool and appealing aesthetic IMO, but nothing will ever convince me rocks have special powers.
Four years ago, especially during the days leading up to the US Presidential Election, there were a number of posts/reblogs encouraging users to share a spell that would allegedly curse Donald Trump so that he wouldn't win the election. In retrospect, we know how well it worked. The poor witches must have felt like some combination of after their spell backfired. It might be interesting to keep an eye on Tumblr to see if anyone tries the same thing this year without learning from their 2016 mistakes.
It would be one thing if these people discussed what they liked about the shape, color, etc. of those stones or crystals. Instead, they unironically believe that being in the same proximity with these stones can cure what ails people or the world as a whole.
To a lesser extent, I've observed people who once claimed to be Wiccan either sour on or abandon those beliefs -- likely due to these people that have no clue how any sort of spirituality works.

Also, I think The Craft was pretty popular? Anyways, that probably in combination with the retro nostalgia. Also, just the ~aesthetic~ in general, the dark colors, the witchy clothing, beautiful crystals, flowers and herbs... Someone already mentioned the moodboards here, that's probably a huge draw for young girls who were barely alive in the nineties.
I think a lot of people find this stuff appealing because it's a power fantasy, or a way to cope with a loss of control. Perform a ritual, and it feels like you've done your part to aid a cause that, realistically, you can't really do anything about.
For the church-goers, though, why not just pray? I mean, isn't the whole point of prayer to ask for divine help with something that's out of your physical grasp?

Agreed! I mean, like rocks and minerals and crystals, too, but I just think they're neat-looking. I especially get a kick out of people who assign meanings to stuff like "angel aura quartz" that's just clear quartz with a chemical coating on it.

I think for some its a desire for the physicality of an object. Spirituality is so intangible and such an abstract concept that for some it becomes easier when its workings and practices can be applied to a physical object. Christianity does it with wine and bread in a similar way. It becomes more personal when you are able to physically feel and interact with the object to which you are applying spiritual use to. Rosaries are another one that I can think of.
I question if these people are just as vapid in their speech in real life. Who believes some larping about the hoodoo is going to get you anything? Even the most religious nutjobs I know - even if they pray till their knees bleed - know they actually have to do more than click a button or pray to do anything in their life.
It's like white feminists on twitter but with really bad clipart and screech about bad juju instead of not getting a their starbucks order right.
For the earlier mention of 'people honest to god thing they're casting social justice spells', please know that these are coming at you thanks to the personal recommendation of the aforementioned Womb Wizard.
I'd also like to bring a blast from like 2016 vintage Witchblr, the wild world of Disney Curse; these were via a personal lolcow way back then, she used to go by queerlittlemermaid but has since trooned out and I'm not sure where she's at now. Reading her tumblr was always a wild-ass ride because she was into the whole Astral dating thing and thought she was fucking... the world serpent, I think? She'd write long romantic screeds about their astral baby together, then got in some drama because her irl girlfriend was astral married to loki but loki kissed her in a dream so it was like, threeway cheating, I don't know this girl was fucking NUTS.

I've mentioned this one in other forums because it haunts me in my fucking sleep, but as for another unspeakably stupid book that looks like it was written for Witchblr, by Witchblr
A magical guide to subverting manboy power, one spell at a time
Skeptics might think witchcraft is nothing more than a fad, but make no mistake: modern witches aren't playing around. Today's wizarding women are raising hell, exorcising haters, and revving up to fight fire with a fierce inferno of magical outrage.
Magic has always been a weapon of the disenfranchised, and in Hexing the Patriarchy, author Ariel Gore offers a playbook for the feminist uprising. Full of incantations, enchantments, rituals, and witchy wisdom designed protect women and bring down The Man, readers will learn how to . . .
Make salt scrubs to wash away patriarchal bullshit
Mix potions to run abusive liars out of town
Use their bare hands and feet to vanquish bro culture
Conjure dead relatives to help smash the system
. . . and more.
From summoning Ancestors to leveraging the Zodiac, these twenty-six alphabetically inspired spells are ready-made recipes for toppling the patriarchy with a dangerously divine, they-never-saw-it-coming power.

"Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God." - Leviticus 19:31
"Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD; because of these same detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God." -Deuteronomy 18: 10-13
"But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. -Revelation 21:8
Yeah, that's because it is, as it makes witchcraft and sorcery look "cool". Harry Potter definitely isn't the only movie/show influencing the masses, but it's one of the biggest influences in getting people into witchcraft.

Indeed, its a little thing called social conditioning. It is no coincidence that all of those shows came out around the same time, they've been brainwashing children with these shows in order to make witches, sorcery, magic, and witchcraft look "cute, cool, and fun", and personally, I find it very deceiving and sickening. Meanwhile, any TV shows or hollywood mainstream movies make Christianity look either "lame, stupid, or geeky", or just outright "evil and hatemongers" when that couldn't be further from the truth. Satan is a very clever being and will do anything to corrupt today's generation in order to usher in a New World Order, and look where we are at here in 2020, if these aren't signs that we are living in the end times, then I don't know what are.
Like ten different tumblr witches lost their shit when I said I thought this shit was stupid. They all immediately used Christianity as an example of stupid things people believe in, which is funny, because I think God is more believable than Aphrodite - a goddess born from someone's ballsack.

It's because we are moving ever more close to the end times in which the world will be transiting to a Luciferian New World Order led by the Anti-Christ, and Satan is going to use New Age religion to convince the world to worship the beast, by making the people of all the world's religions that they all "worship the same god" which i will obviously be a lie. Satan uses people to make Christianity look bad, and these witches are no different.

I took til seeing the schizo youtube thumbnail to realize what I was looking at. An honest to god Fundie in the year 2020, on the farms of all places... Wasn't expecting to see that today. Echoing @Wych Elm, I really do adore this site.
