Glad to see this is playing out exactly as expected, and Forbes is pointing out this game is a dumpster fire without even playing it by using the rest of the reviews out there.
I'm honestly shocked by how bad this seems to be. Like, the diversity is just to make the body count equality friendly, that it misses the tone most of us have seen and understood. Humans tend to co-operate, they tend to come together in times of hideous, hideous crisis just like we've seen in reality during the COVID pandemic, people set aside their differences almost completely during the height of it all, and its only now the worst of it is passing "normal" life is resuming.
Like, even a criminal gang like the Latin Kings and Queens has turned sheriff over their local area and not gone about selfishly terrorising the residents of The Village in Chicago. Heck a faction like that, a former street gang trying to operate a civilisation would be fascinating.
Instead we get a nihilists boring manifesto about lesbian couples in which they do things to each other and don't really bond. This is a game without a soul whatsoever.
Really, the story could've been about a dozen different things. The fact the writing is apparently so lazy that the characters seem completely different from how they were the years prior says a lot. Like, ok, I'm not the same person I was 7 years ago, but there's enough of me from that time that my friends and family obviously recognise me.
This weird Ellie, who grew up in an era probably not knowing what the fuck a bigot even was, feels far too [CURRENT YEAR] in our timeline, instead of focusing on what someone might be like after 7 years of relative safety, in a town in which settlers would be continued to be drawn in. They might be bored and yearn for another adventure like when they were younger, perhaps that could cause a lot of tension because to everyone else she could get infected, she could be killed but obviously Ellie and Joel know different.
The whole game has managed to miss the tone of this years cultural zeitgeist (fuck, this is a bad situation, we need to set aside our differences for half the year to get shit done) and instead is a relentless CURRENT YEAR depression fest.
