Speaking as someone who has done both election and legislative work, I can't begin to tell you how badly I wish people knew basic civics. Honestly, this is a both sides thing because I've dealt with people from both sides who don't know how the government works and their only understanding of current events is through their echo chambers (Fox, CNN, social media).
I don't expect people to know everything, but at least understand why people get elected to the roles they're voted into and what the different branches of government do. I understand that activism can be important, but many people overestimate it.
Put another way, I've dealt with too many idiots who "know what they feel." Whoopty motherfucking do! Knowing how you feel isn't the same as knowing what you're talking about!
