Also I'm re-watching Black Clover, which has one of the best revenge plot lines and says revenge is bad but is very optimistic about it and actually teaches you why. For those that don't want to watch it: In a Kingdom where magic is everything, a boy is born without magic and has to train his body up. The main antagonists are what you think are a terrorist group called 'The Eye of the Midnight Sun'. In reality, they're a race called Elves born with extremely powerful magic, and 500 years ago, tensions between them and humans were high. But humans and elves strives for equality, going so far as to marry a human princess. Though all the elves are genocides by humans including the leader's pregnant human wife. This drives the leader insane, and he casts forbidden reincarnation magic, and his hate transforms him into a monster to try and exterminate the humans for revenge. A kind human is forced to stop him. 500 years later, the reincarnation spell kicks in and they try to kill humans again. But its not that simple. It turns out the humans and elves were both manipulated by an evil demon who feeds off their hate, exploiting their kindness.

Just be warned, its a very slow burn and the first five episodes are hard to get through. Try to tolerate Asta's voice for the first 3-4 episodes, it gets better. And it has a MASSIVE amount of foreshadowing, so try to pay attention. Also a lot of people find the main protag annoying, but he grew on me. I recommend pirating or going to crunchy roll's free trial as Hulu only goes up to episode 50 and you really start understanding at episode 70. Also there are 'gag' characters who actually get their own development and growth. You think this woman who dresses in underwear is there just for fan service, but you find out she's actually been abused. The characters are all really good.

That being said, the 'rules' of the world aren't asspulls and the characters genuinely need to work together. Asta is an imperfect protagonist. He's stupid, reckless, and way too trusting. But he's basically super optimistic and inspiring. I really do enjoy it. Plus it has some fucking awesome openings:

I'm playing through her section right now: they're making ZERO effort to make her anything less than an unlikable cunt, even when she's saving an injured woman's life. I no longer even have the energy to hate her, for that would require her to be compelling. Nay, she is a means to an end- the sooner I get through her fucking section, the sooner I can play as Ellie again and get the closest thing this game will give me to catharsis.

It is fun intentionally getting Abby murked though because she is *so much weaker* gameplay wise than Ellie. She doesn't have the switchblade so clickers just fucking murder her, her weapon options are suboptimal- you get a semi-auto rifle with shit accuracy but high rate of fire, the pistol, and a double-barreled shotgun that comes with a lot of ammo but reloads can get you killed, and her stealth kills either take forever or require a craft item to make.

But are they in any way at all meaningful to the plot? Could they be replaced by saaay cracked out meth heads, and still retain the same general story purpose?

By "no zombies" I don't mean "Literally none" I mean "They are reduced to set dressing, and serve no actual purpose"

Edit: I can only think of once in the entire bit I watched, so the last half of the game, where it mattered that they were actually zombies. And that is when Elie uses one to bait a dude into being bitten to free herself. Even that though is pretty hollow, since it wasn't terribly necessary.
